PS3 HDD Upgrade

Archive: 19 posts

Well I've decided I'm going to upgrade the HDD in the PS3 to a 320GB WD 2.5 5400 SATA, it's $110 AUD for the drive + $15 for an external USB 2.0 case to stick the old 40GB drive into. Should give me plenty of room to store downloaded levels with room to spare for creating ones as well as storing captures and stuff from the PS EYE.

I've read the online guide to upgrading the HDD in the PS3 and have someone coming over with an external USB drive to do the comprehensive backup so I don't lose anything, does anyone have any other tips or things to look out for when upgrading the HDD?

Wow, 320GB, nice.

You know that LBP levels will take up like 200kb each, right? So that's 5000 to 1Gb lol.

Wow, your Ps3 could hold like 1.5M levels, if you only used it for levels, and nothing else lol.2008-09-03 15:40:00

Well I picked up the drive this morning, I decided to go with the 400GB drive for $140.00 AUD Also picked up a 2.5 USB HDD enclosure so I can put the old 40GB PS3 drive into it. Will be installing it tomorrow so will let everyone know how it goes and if there is anything to look out for.

Well I just figured out I've finally cracked the one terabyte of storage space milestone at home, 600GB on my PC, 300 GB on my laptop, 120GB on my Xbox 360 Elite and now 400GB on the PS3 I remember buying my first 120MB HDD and that was $1200 bucks and thinking I had a heap of storage space then.

I still can't get over how cheap 400GB was to buy, god I love Moore's Law.

Yeah, that's the awesomeness of Sony. They're pretty much the first major company to say that people can upgrade components and keep their warranty. They may screw up a lot, but they're good here.2008-09-04 03:22:00

On the PS3 or in general? In general I do a lot of CAD work with very large files, video creation & editing, as well as mapping and I also use the PC as a media server to my home theatre, PS3 and Xbox 360 Elite. For the PS3 basically because I knew the 40GB HDD wasn't going to be large enough (was nearly full already with demos, game saves etc and the 400GB one was cheap so why not, I'm sure I'll find a use for it and if anything I'll be able to download and catalog a lot of LBP levels.

Yeah your warranty is fine with getting a new HDD, why wouldn't you? You don't open the case it is built to allow this. Also you can access your media servers and download plenty of movies and music, these can all take up alot of HDD space. My friend has over 400 movies on his PS3, and 1,000 songs. So yeah very nice to use the PS3 as a hub for all your entertainment.2008-09-04 05:32:00

You need to download the last system update from the us.playstation page. Once the new hdd is in, it'll have to format the disc but it cannot do so unless you have an usb stick ready with the latest system firmware.

I guess this is because the last update was pretty big, with the changes to the xmb etc etc.

I upgraded my 40Gb to 250Gb like two weeks ago so. Used an usb flash stick for all my gamesaves but hadn't read about the ps3 needing the last system update as well so had to download it etc etc.

First thing I'm doing when I get my PS3 is replacing the hard drive. Well, maybe not first thing, but soon after I get a PS3 I'm getting a 320GB hard drive. Yay for having way too much music!2008-09-05 03:12:00

Hey Quozl. I bought a 320GB there a few days ago. I'm in uni at the minute so it'll be be next weekend before I can install it. My 40GB has run out, 320GB was the best value for money (as in c/GB) and I'm only gonna upgrade once so I thought I'd go all out. Cost me 80 euro delivered which is pretty good for Irish electronics prices.

Thanks for the info about the update KBY. I would have panicked if I'd run into problems.

Didn't bother getting a external case for the other drive but may do so I can use it with my laptop. I already have a 500GB ext. for my laptop though so 40GB isn't all that much use... unless I use it only for music or something.

Anyway let my know how ya get on with the installation. Hope everything goes smoothly .
