"sound n space!" - An experiment in navigating via sound (with pictures!)

Archive: 23 posts

I have been working a on a level for an art assignment, using sound for navigation.

The level is divided up into four parts:
- Basic LBP tutorial (with a race option for experienced players)
- Conceptual "run" from urban development
- Blind run course
- Other sound experiments (echolocation, good/bad door, drum kit, sound puzzle)

A blog detailing my level can be found here (http://scotteablog3.blogspot.com/).

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2443/3628696700_e8033f7748_o.jpg http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3319/3628696742_e16a0c927d_o.jpg

Shortcut to the blind course is to the left at the start of the level.

Boing = Jump
Ding = Grab (tap)
Chimp = change direction

Tips:
- Always run as fast as possible.
- Always jump as hard/long as possible.
- Tap R1 as fast as possible.

Cheat:
Place a "star" sticker on the black void and it will dissolve, leaving that section's neon platforms visible.
However the scoreboard won't be as satisfying to stand on when you finish. Also, you won't get any points.

The sound mechanics used in the blind run are unique, so give it a go and tell me what you think. :hero:

Ufff, so weird xD. I don't know if this level is awesome or it sucks xD

Wow, I love this concept. I'm interested to see what you've come up with, and the visuals from the pictures, it looks clean and quite nice. I'm stuck writing a paper at the moment (sort of, as I'm writing this instead of a paper on triangular numbers), so I can't check it out just yet...2009-06-17 02:45:00

I played this earlier today and was wicked tricky. It was new and unique, so it got :star::star::star::star:!

I'm assuming this was made for a class or something?

Edit: Duh, "for an art assignment"

Yeah, the project was an open ended one that had to be based on mapping.
So I went from mapping > spaces > physical-virtual > navigation > navigation via sound.

What did you find tricky about it?
Was it anything gameplay breaking (jumps too high/wrong sound effect/etc) or was it just hard getting used to navigating by sound?

Added F4F to thread.
Also decided to add an infinite check point to the hard section.

I just had a problem near the harder (I think) sound-navigation section. It was tough getting used to the sounds while mastering the timing they required. I would anticipate the jump, jump too early, etc. To appease the average player, you may want to make it a race and include infinite checkpoints, because I was truly motivated to keep going, but i ran out of lives.2009-06-19 12:52:00

Ah yes. I forgot to mention you need to run as fast as possible. I'll add that to the magic mouth.
I thought about making it a race, but I think the constant ticking noise is too much of a distraction when you are trying to listen for audio cues?

= Looks like I am the first person to finish the level besides you. =

+ Very witty level description which made me chuckle.

+ Really nice idea that actually works really well.

+ All of the different section of the level work really well as their own section ... however I think it would be nice if they fit together more as a whole/unit.

+ I think it was a really good idea to keep the first sections of the sound area visible to give a nice intro to the mechanic and give people a chance to get used to it before going lights out.

- The transition between sections is the main part that I think makes the level seem so segmented and not a single level. I don't know if that was what you were going for, but I think it might be more effective if the sections are more tied together somehow.

- After jumping the first set of obstacles in the 'tutorial' you can see the dark matter on the floor just above the thin layer.

- The overall difficulty is definitely going to give you problems with most players. It is a very tough level and even though I am an avid gamer who loves platformers ... that last section was almost too difficult for me. I was getting very frustrated and almost gave up. This difficulty is great for people who are looking for a very challenging level.

- However, I think if you made another version of the level with the same mechanic, or maybe toned down the difficulty level on this one you would be able to get more people to appreciate the idea you have and have fun playing and completing the level.

CONGRATULATIONS!

I wondered about that. I have minor details (like when you fall down the hole, the hole gets less curvy, becomes blacker, and virtual pixels gain in size), but I might make another level simply for the sound mechanic.

- After jumping the first set of obstacles in the 'tutorial' you can see the dark matter on the floor just above the thin layer.

fixed.

Yeah, I figured it would be too difficult for most. I have now added a "hard" tag to the level name, and infinite checkpoints to the blind run.

- However, I think if you made another version of the level with the same mechanic, or maybe toned down the difficulty level on this one you would be able to get more people to appreciate the idea you have and have fun playing and completing the level.
Thats a good idea. Originally this level was just for presentation purposes, but I might make another for average LBP players, or encorporate the mechanic in another level.

Thanks for taking the time to look at the level. Bonus points for finishing!

Wow this is definitely one of the most unique LBP levels I've ever played!

From reading this thread it sounds like the infinite checkpoints are a new addition to the level, and all I can say is that I can't imagine not having them! They are a great addition though and they let you slowly make progress through trial and error...learning what works and what gets you killed, and slowly getting further each time.

Having said that, I got stuck for about 10 minutes at the second pitch-black section, where the monkey sound told me to reverse direction but it would immediately lead me into electricity when I turned around. Although having now read this thread, it sounds like maybe my timing was off because I was proceeding too slowly...

Anyway this was a really interesting experiment in LBP design and I can't wait to come back and have another go at joining you on the scoreboard. The only problem is that I agree with some of the other comments in this thread, which is that you're going to have problems getting lots of plays and high ratings due to LBP players mainly being pretty impatient and not up for a challenge. Still, don't let that put you off, this is amazing work!

Very unique and challenging concepts! I think the most challenging aspects of the game are getting the timing as well as the length of the jumps and when to grab. As you said "running as fast as possible" helps, but after a direction switch it becomes a matter of personal reflexes getting up speed. I often found myself jumping too soon or too late just after a direction switch. As of yet I have been unable to complete the level, but enjoyed trying!
~like you asked me, "Why isn't the title of the level capitalized?" .
lol just giving ya a hard time =p
Keep up the unique and creative work!

Ah I see. I did try to add some buffer space after the change direction sounds, perhaps it would be a good idea to increase it a bit more.
Length of jumps is always press long/hard as possible, just like the running is always full tilt. I'll add instructions to the OP.
As for the capitalization...This level was formed from research into childrens play spaces in both the real and virtual world, and I wanted to reflect that somehow. Since you can't have the chich? backwards "N', and I didn't want to misspell the title (in fear of people not being able to find the level), lower case was the best option. HA! Beat that.
Thanks for the return review.

EDIT: Went back though and modified the last part of the hardest section to make it work better. Also a little eaiser.
Also added points for finishing without using the cheat.

Just played your level tonight but couldn't finish it.
Actually I have some very short gaming time before having to go to sleep + age = my attention span is getting shorter by the day. I however understand AND LIKE your concept. I never seen anything like it in the community levels I have played. At first I was really dumb in the blind section. I dunno, I was trying to look at the screen and it's like my brain was expecting to see something. lol This made me miss all the timing needed. Then I started to not look at the screen and things went better. It went better until I was in the third part of the blind section and I started to felt it was neverending (you know, after dying something like 10 times in each sections).
Long story short, I understand and like the idea, the concept of the level but I would have develloped it in another way. I sadly didn't see the last sections though because of my short attention span. I would prefer sounds for resolving puzzles, finding stuff or detecting how to proceed. It's definetely inspiring while I think about it!

:star::star::star: (gave 4 in-game though because it's an original concept + takes balls to publish it anyways).

Same thing Dark-Match said with the direction change I would change directions & kept dien over & over...I like the concept of the level though it was very unique and my 1st time coming across that..

Positives:
+ The whole neon area in the dark was pretty koo i thought we would have to go through the dark like that but turned out I was wrong.

Negatives:
- Building chasing you thing I was feeling it to much
- And the beginning with the press X to jump speech bubbles I just felt that, that shouldnt of been added due to the fact everyone been playing lbp for awhile now(This wasnt much of a problem just saying)

Overall Keep Up The Good Work..Sorry couldn't finish :star::star::star:

I love getting players feedback on this, haha.
Thanks RangerZero + Sabre_.

Since people are having trouble, (like I expected ha) I'll reveal the cheat for the each section.

Place a "star" sticker on the black void and it will dissolve, leaving the neon platforms visible.
This will give you a lot of help if you are stuck on a certain section. I would rather people take a shortcut/cheat to finish than to not finish at all.

I really liked the concept, but it was far too difficult to actually play, and finish. If the difficulty was lowered, I'm sure it would be an excellent level!

Because I had to cheat just to beat it, I gave it

I had a hard time where the pattern was "Ding" "ding" "boing" "ding" "boing" pattern.
When I reach to the bottom where it goes "boing" "oo a a" was tough lol (The last one before the cheating section)

I like the idea though.

And why is the building chasing you xD

Yeah, it does get rather tough in that red section. I'm glad people make it past the boing/ding (jump/grab) though.
LOL. Yeah as for the building chasing you, this level has some conceptual elements.
Basically it's about play spaces and how natural ones are shrinking in size from development, and virtual ones are getting bigger/wider/deeper with more interaction.
Thanks for playing xero + count!

Thanks for the feedback of "The Hero Chronicles LV6 Sky Metropolis". This level is challenging but in a fun way thanks to the sounds that tests your skills. The level could use more visuals though. Overall I gave it 4 stars.2010-08-16 02:56:00

I did not finish.

It's a great concept, and really fun to try for awhile..I was starting to make real progress, but after about ten minutes of getting sent back to the checkpoint, I threw in the towel. I may use the cheat and try again, just because the last section sounds really cool. What visuals I could see, I enjoyed.

Really, I found no problem with the level. As you said, it's an experiment. It was pretty late and I got frustrated.

Sorry my review's so short, but I couldn't see much, you know. Not only that, but my wife keeps glaring at me. Bedtime. Nite.

Such a brilliant concept. Loved it to the end. It just seemed a little bit "cheap". I know it was an experiment though, but at least put the title in capitals.

I'd love to see what you do next!

Hi, I played the level several days ago, and today I have given it another chance. First time I could not finish. Now, I have been able to finish, but I had to use the star sticker

Overall the idea is good. The problem I saw is regarding the difficult. Is very difficult, and when you die several times in the same point you get frustrated soon. I'm not sure if you used the correct sounds. I mean, the jump sound is ok, obviously, but not suer about the ding and the monkey... it's not intuitive you have to play many times until you get confortable with that. Neverthelss the level is too hard, and before you feel capable to do it, you get sick and have to quit. That was my opinion.

In the final part, in the "others experiment" section you can fall down, out of the level. You could try to fix that part...

Anyway I gave :star::star::star::star: becuase I think the idea is so great.
