First Level - To delete or not to delete... This is the question!

Archive: 33 posts

As a creator, I'd like to think that every new level I create improves on the last. You learn new skills, get more comfortable with the tools etc.

I was just thinking though that say someone was on their 7 day journey up the pages pimping their latest fantastic level, would it be a good idea to lock that slightly dated level that you first created (you know the one, Lots of MM objects, built around a template with more dark matter then outer space). You can't delete it, Far too much love went into it and its what made you fall in love with the game, but... you know just..... keep it to yourself, for you to enjoy....)

The idea behind this is that when people come and visit your levels they have no idea in which order they were created. So they could go from your best level straight onto that loveable scruff of a level, at which point decide your a one hit wonder and veer away not playing your other masterpieces....

Its a toughie.... but the phrase quality over quantity comes to mind.

What do you guys and gals think?

Is it time to start cutting the fat?

The question I would ask is.... "are they fun"?

In YOUR particular case, I've played and enjoyed your early levels.

My personal technique is that I bunch all the levels together that I WANT people to consider, and I put the ones I'm not so proud of off somewhere else scattered on the planet.

I deleted my first. Though this was due to changes in the physics engine when the full game was released and it became very awkward to actually complete.

I would suggest that you keep it and change the title to something like "Level Name - First Ever Level".

It's great to go to a creator's profile and see how they've advanced.

I don't think first levels should be deleted, just do what Killian said and put that it's your first level in the title or in the description. I like to see the evolution of creators so even if the level stinks I play them just to see that.2009-06-16 16:29:00

I went back and remade Life on Mars from scratch after making Eddy Mitter. Did it over 2 days. There were just so many things about it that annoyed me (Mm stuff and huge score bubble drops etc). I now feel it holds up against my newer levels whereas before it was obviously made before the rest.

I couldn`t bare to get rid of the original though so it sits, locked, at the south pole waiting for me to go back when I`m feeling nostalgic.

Thanks mate, but its still fair to say that there are big differences between earlier levels. A gap that will only increase as we create more levels in the future.

I like this idea, or maybe number them or have the date in the title.......

Scratch the date idea, all you yanks will get confused when I write it properly

I kind of like Matt's idea - just remake all of them.

I always wanted to see the house ACTUALLY picked up and thrown around in the Wizard of Odd.

This is what I do, "My 1st level, My 2nd level etc." in the description. I want people to see I've gotten significantly better from when I made my first level.

I did go back on this level actually and spend a night sprucing it up. It now starts in black and white, gets darker in caves etc, also made some more visual tweaks but I'm always looking for the next idea, I get a weird emptiness when I publish a level and I have nothing to work on Its hard to find the time to go back to these things.....

I keep my first (and only) beta level around, mostly to keep a copy of my old objects in case I feel like using them. I don't particularly feel compelled to remove it since it's not a bad nor broken level. 2009-06-16 16:44:00

Keep them! I made the mistake of editing my first level ever, which I build on the first day of the beta and I regret ever since. If you don't want them to be playable just save them on your moon or lock them.
My second and third level (Operation Sackeater and Speedmapping 1) from the beta are still playable today and I'm really glad I didn't delete them or change them. Somewhat surprisingly they both have 4 stars. : )

Im not neccessarily saying all our first levels are bad. But lets say over the next year, you build the mother of all mechs! That blow everything you've done to date (which is very impressive by the way) out of the water, were talking flying transforming, does a riverdance if you pull a certain switch..... you get the idea...

Now your earlier work, although impressive, brings the overall quality down...

But I suppose this is always going to be the case if you continue to improve with each new level you produce...

I'd just like a way of ordering the levels so people are aware if their playing a recent level or an old one.

We could always badger MM to add a level # or publish date... or something. I'm sure those stats are somewhere and easy to display. 2009-06-16 17:13:00

I ended up having to delete my first 4 I made (one full, 3 mini-game kind of things) because I just kept running out of room on the moon and on my page with locked storage/work-in-progress levels... it hadn't occurred to me to throw them onto another account at the time.

I would at least copy it back to your moon, lock it republish it in a new spot as copyable and send yourself a key to a different account, take it there and publish it. That's what I've been doing lately... I've got a full publish page, a full moon, and another account with all my old stuff on it.

I thought about this once.
But I can't erase my first level (The Banana Horde). First, I have a special attachement to it and I started it in the beta for the game. Also, it meets my "minimum quality requirements" to stay there.

I've deleted one of the two levels I created in the beta. The first (that's gone now) literally stinked in all meanings of the word. The level that still exists are "hidden" on the other side of the globe. But it's like... too precious to be deleted, even if I'm not very proud of it. lol2009-06-16 17:42:00

Well, I deleted my first level from the servers. Mine was terrible, and it was just taking up space of the number of levels I'm able to publish. I still have it on my moon though, just for nostalgic reasons.

The difference is though, you've always been a good creator on LBP, and your earlier stuff are still fun. If I were you I'd tell people that it's your first level in the description or title.

I would suggest deleting levels based on their fun level... not necessarily based on their age.2009-06-16 19:55:00

But what about tech demos and object showcases? They're not particularly fun, just show off what can be done with LBP.

Well, my first ever decent level was my beloved golf clubhouse. You know, the one with the golf cart through the wall. Before I published it, I deleted my 7 or 8 old levels. I kinda wish I hadn't now, since they were no longer on my moon.
I say, lock, sure, but don't delete.

I deleted a few of my first levels because it would ruin my reputation. Especially since I'm new at "getting-your-levels-on-the-top-of-the-cool-pages-and-getting-a-billion-plays".
While I'm proud of them, I don't care enough to keep them online. The only early levels I have right now is a bad survival challenge and a stupid rocket-cheetah thing

I took my first two levels down.

After I made Flaming Timberland 1...I replayed them and while (in my opinion, of course) they were still decent, the difference between them and FT was massive. As soon as I made FT2 and published it, I took them both off as I knew that they that my FT series were far far superior and I didn't want to bring the over all quality of my levels down by still having my first two levels up.

I did however keep them on my moon until recently. Unfortunately, I got the 'profile full' message so had to start deleting. I decided to delete my second level and keep my first. Even though my second level was technically better, there was nothing that original in there in terms of design, while I think that my first level is a bit funky and does have the potential to be a very good level. I doubt I'll ever get round to doing anything with it, and I'm sure that the next time 'profile full' pops up it will be the first one to go but still

Personally, yeah I would take it/them down. My theory is that I will only ever have levels up that I am truly proud of and think that they're the best I can do.

some of my first levels ive deleted. others ive thrown under lock and key under another account so not to take up space on my cen user name. it was hard to delete hours of work but if i ever wanted to recreate them it would take a quarter of the time and they would come out much cleaner.2009-06-16 20:39:00

Wex- Keep a copy somewhere either on your computer or another user account if they mean something to you... if they don't, and you don't like them, and their going to tarnish, (*gasp*) your LBP rep... then boot them. No emotional ties here... they may just outlive their usefulness. They're not children... and I would rather delete them, then live with the profile headaches...2009-06-16 21:13:00

In my opinion, you should delete it or lock it (locking is better I would say.) If you delete it, you should keep it on your moon, but eventually you may have to delete it all together to make way for better levels. MM really need to give us the ability to make more levels, I say the max should be 40. 2009-06-16 21:23:00

If it's fun to play, keep it around. If there are other levels you're not proud of, you can lock 'em up and keep the key in a secret area in one of your levels. That's what I'm gonna do!2009-06-16 21:29:00

There's only a handful of bananas in there. You might want to take a look at my level before scraping your ideas. lol

My first level (during the beta) was awful in hindsight, but I was very pleased with myself at the time. It was a fairground with lots of coloured stars.

I called it 'Twinkly Fair'.

"Twinkly Fair" was not to twinkle for very long though, it got done in by the 'failed to load'

It no longer exists. It twinkles no more.....

I still go back to play my level, as it is still fun for me.

But I can't really change anything since it is all glued together.

I'd say it's ultimately up to you. If you don't want it on your map, delete it. If you want to keep it for nostalgic reasons then keep a copy somewhere else. I've already deleted two full levels, and I'll probably delete more when necessary. I guess I just don't see the point of keeping levels around if you don't feel they're up to snuff. After all it's only time.2009-06-17 00:18:00

Tere IS a way to still keep it and open wothout that problem!
Simpli make an alt acc, lovk your level make it copyable and send the key to that other acc. then just copy it and publish it in your new acc!!
And listo, now you got 20 new spots for your older "loveable scruff level" as you would say it, and all of your best and latest levels would be in your main acc.
You can even put messages of how those levels were moved to the other acc or stuff to let others know about that other acc in case they want to play those levels!
Hope that helps!
