Music Maker

Archive: 23 posts

So basically my idea is to create a level where you can create your own music, in almost a similar format to GarageBand on the Mac. This may sound crazy at first, but I've got this thought through.

You will be able to choose between multiple instruments, such as a Piano, and yu will be able to choose your notes as well. I do not want to give to much away, because I want it to be a "surprise". Once you create a song, you will get a code and a music box object. You insert the music box object into your levels, and enter the code into it and the song will play in your level.

Yes, I know it sounds complicated, but I know what I am doing.

sounds pretty cool. And very complicated for the music box item. I'll be interested to see how this comes out.2009-06-16 05:57:00

There would have to be a small limit as to the length of the song right?2009-06-16 06:06:00

There probably would have to be a time limit, because the music box could only fit so many "notes".

Sounds interesting. But how would the code thing work? You can't just have people put in the notes. That's not a code =/

And besides, I already made something similar (see sig) except you can't save it and you can't switch instruments. It currently is 3 blocks from being overheated, so good luck =

I was thinking it would basically do numbers that corresponded to certain notes... using sticker switches and stuff.... still working on it.

Hey just out of curiosity, how many switches and pistons and stuff like that do you have in your level?

I have very few pistons but I have a whole lot of emitters, they really get the thermo up.

I know this can be done. Some dude made a music beat machine, and it's really cool. Go search for it on youtube. I can't seem to find it right now.2009-06-17 15:13:00

Your idea is interesting, but I think the complexity of it might be too much for your run of the mill player. I'm sure many musicians would be impressed by it though. I wonder what you'll come up with though.2009-06-17 18:58:00

I have drawn out some blueprints for this, and I will post them soon.

It will look similar to GarageBand in the fact that chosen instrument will be on the left and the notes will be on the right. I'm not sure if there will be multiple instruments or not, mostly because that would take up a lot of space. I cannot really work on this right now, because I need to get a new PlayStation controller (my old one is broken).

Also, I need a clever name for this music maker thing. If anyone has ideas, post them please.

Nice idea, but I've seen a fairly similar level made by some japanese guy. Its basically a sampler. It has a grid and a jetpack with a note drawing tool on it. You step in and fly up to where you want your notes in the grid pattern and you grab the sponge connected to the jetpack to place a note.

Then the notes trigger in a loop, which is all powered by a big windmill. Very clever design, but quite complicated to think through and iron out flaws.

So I imagine this'll be a serious challenge for anyone. Especially if you want people to be able to make their own coded patterns to play.

I made a music level myself with a slightly similar idea. The player is able to trigger different loops that spawn by emitter. Was very tricky tweaking the emitters to get them to dissolve the previous loop. But it worked out okay.

heres the thread, video in OP too.

Good luck with this one!

Oh yeah, I saw that one. It has a lot of flexibility. It was WAY too hard to add notes, though.

Hmm I don't feel so original now that I realize other people have done it I'll do it anyways.

Picture of what it will look like is coming soon!

this is what the basic interface will look like, and I do not want to give away how the inside will work (yet).

Cool, you should be able to get in about 15 notes in there. That's a decent amount of notes for a short tune.
I suggest you get in some drums. Then you're set!

Thanks for the good feedback! I am still working on the way you can put it into your own levels, and I am also thinking how I will put drums in.
