This is hard...

Archive: 7 posts

I think this is the right place to post this, but correct me if I screwed up

I'm working on a sequel to my Sun Temple. It's, of course, the Moon Temple!

The way I have the level organized, is that the player falls into this main room and from that main room he can go into different chambers/corridors/places with lots of traps, and at the end of all those obstacles, he flips the switch and that unlocks one of the gates to the Boss room.

Right now I have the Crescent Moon room and the Half Moon rooms finished. I'm working on the Full Moon room and adding a little secret Eclipse Room as a bonus.

So basically things are going fine, except for the fact I don't know how to make a Gibbous Moon. Yeah, you're probably thinking it's easy to make, but trust me, it's not! Try it. You'll see that it's really hard to make.

I was wondering if any of you had an idea of how to make a Gibbous Moon. I've tried some methods out myself and all I end up with is a lemon shape  So far I've tried mixing a Half Moon shape with an ellipse, then I tried taking a full circle and cutting out a Crescent moon. I'm wondering if I should include this Moon phase at all. Who will miss it? I have enough right? Half, Crescent, Full, that's enough, right?

I also was wondering how you all would make an Eclipse Moon. I so far have come up with two methods.

One involves putting a light behind a piece of circular rubber. And that works except I don't know how to hide the light from shining through the rubber. I want the light to come out from the edges and it does that, but it keeps showing through the rubber and I want to avoid that. Is there a way solve this?

The second method I found was to take a circular piece of rubber and attach it to a larger circular piece of some lighter material. It works fine, It doesn't really look that nice. I don't know, what do you all think? Which is the better way of making an Eclipse Moon?

If anyone has any ways to better whatever I've come up with, let me know. Or if anyone thinks they have a better way to make an Eclipse Moon and Gibbous Moon, let me know.

Thanks in advance!

EDIT:

I'm also working on a Boss and wanted some feedback on how it's coming along. It's a Phoenix and here's a picture

The picture actually doesn't do it justice. There are A LOT more flames. Actually, that's sort of a problem. I'm getting lots of slowdown when I'm near the structure. I guess I went a little overboard with the flames. But can you blame me? It looks so cool!

Do any of you have any idea of how I can cut down this slowdown while still have lots of flames? And how is the Boss coming along? I know it doesn't have a head yet, but I'm still figuring out how to make that along with making the tail.

could you perhaps have all of the moon symbols made in the same format:

a ring of stone, with a circle inside, now the circle could be made of differing amounts of white material and black material depending on what phase of the moon you want it to look like.

my early thoughts on the phoenix, and this is just based on that picture, is that it doesn't really look like a phoenix, where's the head?

Edit/ my girlfriend says it looks like a fire-spider/crab

You didn't read my whole post did you!? I said the head and tail were coming eventually. I think it's pretty good so far. You know, for not having a head an all. I'm no artist either.

I like your circle of stone idea btw

no idea on the moon, but as to your pheonix question, there is no way to reduce teh slowdown without reducing the amount of fiery flames. you can make the flames larger perhaps, so you have less flames at once?2009-06-16 05:49:00

The eclipse moon; Play around with the radius and brightness settings... I think that you can try that first method whilst having lower radius and more brightness....

And That's what she said

I re-read it and missed the bit where you said you were making the head again.

With the eclipse, you could have a one layer thick piece of circular rubber with a thin layer of VR metal (probably red) that's only slightly bigger than the rubber so you can see the glowing edge, then play aroud with the background settings and the camera until it doesn't seem so red anymore.2009-06-16 18:22:00
