Level that plays by itself

Archive: 15 posts

I found this level just out of luck, this Friday, when I brought my PS3 at work.
Unfortunately, since I was hooked to a 8 inches monitor, I couldn't read the exact title of the level or the author, but there were at least 3 levels made by this guy that were just worth of mention.
Were they gorgeous looking? No
Were they fun to play? No

In fact you have not to play, the level asks you to leave the joypad on your desk and look at what will happen.

Basically a system of contraptions will move your sackboy from the beginning of the level to the end, and it's just awesome how all the stuff is tweaked.
It surely deserves to be seen.

To my eyes it has been as powerful as the first LBP calculator.
If you're interested in knowing the mechanics of the game, take a look at those works.

I think you're talking about the levels by Centurion24 and yeah they're pretty cool, a lot of different things no one has done before.
I'm still waiting for someone to take the next step with these kinds levels which would be making it look great while still working perfectly but no one has done that yet. I'm sure the thermo wouldn't be an issue to making one of these kinds of levels with a theme to them. Maybe I should have a go at it.
Oh BTW, Centurion24 posts here sometimes.

Try "The Way Things Go" - the silhouette look is nice, even though it isn't actually detailed underneath the effect.

There was another Rube Goldberg machine level out around the same time as CENTURION's first one... it had a cool industrial look, but the mechanics were really sloppy in comparison, and it seemed so cluttered and obscuring, difficult to enjoy because of all the foreground material and cluatsrophobic tunnels.

It's a weird balance, and probably a hard one to achieve.

Centurion24...Okay, must say it now, waaaaaay overrated. I mean, seriously, I've played epic levels by Wex, Mrssupercomputer, Zwoltopia, Crow- (and the list goes on) which only have four stars, and yet this guy does something in a few seconds and BOOM - instant five stars. Incredibly annoying, they're not even that good.2009-06-15 18:00:00

I'm pretty sure the stuff he does takes longer than a few seconds. There must be a hell of a lot of fine tuning that goes into these things to make them all work perfectly every time.2009-06-15 22:42:00

I believe he did put a timeframe on one of them in the description. He said something like 15 hours I believe. I can understand that, because you have to play the entire level to get to where you are at in the fine tuning. That can be tedious and time-consuming, not to mention boring to have to play your own level over and over and over again to perfect it.

very frustrating. you can perfect something in the beginning stages of your level and have it not work in a later stage. as you add to your level the tension seems to increase in your pistons and bolts. so you don't just perfect something and then move on but you have to play it from begging to end with every addition. ive broken down the rube levels into two parts. i call them backboard shots and hole in ones. the hole in ones are so hard to maintain that i always regroup with a backboard shot. combos are hard to maintain also. thats why they come after a slow starting catapult. even though its a frustrating process it is nice to see them enjoyed by others. have a go at it. [tip] when your ready to throw your controller through a wall, put an ending on your level & publish it.

I think thats a tad unfair. Granted, they're not the glitziest of levels, but i played The One That Plays Itself Pt 3 , and sat there with a grin the entire time, i thought it had a lot of slapstick charm. There was some brilliant comedy moments, and that stuff isn't easy to look effortless.

...and yet, hardly anybody can get a basic Rube Goldberg level to work without fail everytime, let alone look interesting, fun to watch, and feel exciting enough to replay more than once due to the endless variety of actions and contraptions. Not to mention make 3 of them within the span of a week that meet this criteria.

Honestly, I think everyone's overrated or underrated by someone.

I gotta agree... I even went into it with a bit of a negative attitude and was highly entertained. Definately not the most technical levels, but a lot of fun to watch and I could imagine it took a lot of tweaking.

I gave it 4 out of 5 stars.... mainly because I feel there ARE levels out there that are flat out amazing, so I have to agree I personally don't consider it 5, but certainly quite a few people were entertained enough to give it 5 so I won't argue the score.

Hey.... just watched Ninja's comment pop in over mine.

On the OTHER hand, I gave his level "Run for It (normal)" 5 stars and a heart simply because I thought the idea, though simple, was carried out really well.

I have to agree with you KoRnDawwg. I played his 'Level That Plays Itself' and wasn't moved... At all... But people are entitled to their opinions. Whatever floats 'yer boat!

If you weren't moved by A Level That Plays Itself, you must have forgotten to cross the start gate and activate the machine

I kid.

Yes, it's him, Centurion24

I, as of now, have seen a ton of different levels with this same "Playing Itself" thing going on, and I see that some aren't made by him!

I think he was the one with the original concept, though.

I played that level, and I gave it 5/5 stars. It's just so neat, lol.
