Oblivion, or Fallout 3?

Archive: 63 posts

Hey guys, Jeff here.
I wanted to know everyones oppinion on the 2 fantastic games. Like which do you like better from the both and just which did you enjoy more.
I personally like Oblivion better. I feel like Fallout 3 was a bit repetitive at times with the amount of dungeon-crawling you do, but thats just my oppinion. So, respond with whichever one you like better, and why!

-Cheers

I kinda don't like either's Gameplay, but I'd choose because it's a post nuclear holocaust game, and Oblivion is more generic fantasy, so Fallout 3 wins for best setting in my eye.2009-06-14 22:52:00

I'd choose Oblivion because I hate grey/brown games and zombies. I have not play Fallout 3, though.2009-06-14 22:57:00

OBLIVION! No doubt about it. Don't like Fallout 3 much... it's dark, bleak, grim, depressing and all that sort of bad stuff. Oblivion is kind of grim at times, though not nearly to the same extent, and it's eased by the beautiful word you are traversing anyway!

Fallout 3 is not a bad game by any means, I just don't really enjoy playing it. Also maybe it's just me but it is FAR more difficult than Oblivion. I always seem to be low on ammo, stimpacks and health and some areas may take me multiple tries to pass. Also there is a severe shortage of any type of loot so caps are also hard to come by. And Oblivion had far more options in terms of item creation with the spell and enchantment systems and the alchemy system. And stuff that's in both games such as item repair is much harder in Fallout 3... and the Sniper Rifles break in no time at all . I guess Fallout 3 is just a tougher, bleaker game.

I dunno, Fallout is just less interesting to me. I played it for a while when I got it but haven't played it in ages now.

I can't get into Oblivion. I try, and sometimes succeed, but then I try the story levels and get destroyed by things like Scamps. Then I quit. I could be level 50, but since the enemies level up with me, the scamps would still kill me. I'm not encouraged to level up.

FO3 had way more interesting quests to me, and a way better setting. Even though the story sucked, FO3 wins for me.

Definatly Oblivion!!

As much as i've tried to enjoy it, from the second i started playing it i hated Fallout.
It's just so dull and depressing, and it had annoying things like shopkeepers only selling 10 bullets at a time. And that's only the beginning of what i have to say :S

I know some people enjoy Fallout but personally i think Oblivion wins by miles

i prefer oblivion but i love how short the battles are in fallout. in oblivion, i might have to slash a guy for 2 minutes straight but in fallout, i just shoot them a few times and its over.2009-06-14 23:24:00

Fallout 3 from those two. So many juicy mods available. I play mine with a snowy tundra with snowflakes falling from the sky.

On the Oblivion front it's good but after playing Two Worlds I think I realised how much it holds you back powerwise compared to other RPG's.

Definitily Oblivion. This is because i prefer the colours in oblivion than the ones in fallout 3. I will admit with what they had to work with on fallout 3 they did a superb job. But i don't like bleak, dark, drab, depressing colours. Also i found fallout 3 a tad reptitive and theres definitily not as much to do as there is in oblivion.2009-06-15 00:15:00

I hated fallout three. Maybe its because somehow i managed to skip half the story when i found rivvet city before any other part of the story. Also i wasn't doing the side quests so i was upset when you didn't get to continue playing after the end.2009-06-15 12:59:00

I have to say, the winner in my opinion is Fallout 3. Never have i been so immersed in a game than before Fallout 3. The play time i racked up on it is astanomical considering i got it at christmas, i must admit i havn't played it for a couple of months due to playing other games such as LBP and Burnout but man what a game Fallout is. Sure i loved Oblivion, but after i sold my Xbox and got my PS3 i lost interest in playing through it again. I borrowed my mates GOTY edition just to play the expansions but never really got into it again. The main story of Oblivion in my opinion dragged way too much and just seemed generally boring after doing it once before. The main stroy on Fallout however seemed to keep me intrested even after i had played through the game 3 times and the Karma system was fanastic. One of the key reasons why i'm going to say Fallout 3 aswell is that it seems to have more support on the PS3 than Oblivion did. With its DLC coming out it just means more gameplay and more wasteland to love.2009-06-16 12:08:00

I would say Oblivion, as there are a lot more side quests with it, unlike with Fallout 3 where you have to mainly focus on the main quest.2009-06-16 21:43:00

With my last character on oblivion i did all the side stories before i even started the main quest. The fact is i had already finished it on my freinds 360 so when it came out on the PS3 i wasn't really botherd about that.

Also although it does get annoying doing the mages guild is also pretty fun.

I pick both Because Bethsoft makes great games,
But if there DLC's come out all buggy for PS3
im never going to buy a Bethsoft game again, its bad enough they made us wait like half a year for DLC!

I'm actually really annoyed that i hate Fallout xD

Everyone tells me it's great and then i end up playing it for 2 hours trying to find out what was good about it and ultimately end up miserable and bored

It's the same with Pixeljunk Monsters - everyone tells me how awesome it is, but i hate playing it

:O Dex! You cannot hate Fallout! Only joking, each to their own.

I was instantly immersed in Fallout's story, gripped me from the beggining to the end. Loved every second of it.

I think it'd be interesting to see if I would've liked Fallout 3 if it hadn't come out with all the Warhammer 40k mods that I knew would come. The game is just so right for that kind of mod and I can't wait for the Tallarn overhaul .2009-06-19 14:06:00

I brand any game like Oblivion as "goblins and swords."

World of Borecraft, Runescape, that kind of thing.

I can't stand them, so when I heard that basically a game with the depth of Oblivion only with guns and set in the future, I was like WOAH!.

Unfortunately, once you leave the vault, it all starts to go downhill for me. What a borefest honestly, you try and do a quest, and end up with about 20, including finding like crap from someone who doesn't mean anyone to you. I just found it hard to concentrate and enjoy, I'd much rather the action and pace from LittleBigPlanet than walking for 15 minutes and encountering SERIOUSLY annoying animals that not only deplete your health, but also your precious ammo, and most of all, frickin patience!!!

i strongly agree with you dude i mean i have Oblivion and its a great game as well (endless hours enhancing your weapons and creating spells) but it kind of got boring real fast and the shivering isles DLC was fun until you beat it. i have to go with fallout 3. yeah its alittle darker then oblivion but thats what keeps me interested in it. its a post apocalyptic world and even though there's mutants and all, it feels alittle more real or i think so. but i love Oblivion just the same

even though i play fallout more then Oblivion, i really love that you can make your own spells and name them just like with weapon enhchantments. i could spend hours on end making things from my favorite anime xD

see i had to actually think really hard before i posted the first time, because both are amazing achievements in gaming. First off i agree that Oblivion can get somewhat dull, but when you boil it down Fallout and Oblivion are too completely different games. Yes, they were made by the same company, and they incorporated some things from Oblivion into Fallout 3, but still. It is almost impossible for me to compare the two, the play style is so, night and day that while everyone is entitled to their own opinions, and should be able to compare and contrast these games as they see fit, i don't feel it's possible. Both games can never get old for me, especially Fallout 3 right now with DLC soon to hit the PSN. Overall though, Try both and what ever style you like more will be the game for you. If shooting is more your thing you'll like Fallout 3 eons more over Oblivion, but if you like strategies and more RPG elements, start with Oblivion, while Fallout 3 still defiantly has them in the game they aren't as common as in Oblivion, either way enjoy these amazing games that Bethesda has crafted and can't wait for the next amazing installment to the Bethesda next gen line up!2009-06-23 21:54:00

I'd say that I prefer Oblivion over Fallout 3. Oblivion is a much slower and harder game, you come out of the hand holding tutorial and... feel completely lost and overwhelmed. Repeatedly. But if you can live with the lack of direction it's a very good game.

Fallout 3 is far more intentional I found in it's spelling out of the plot and quest structure. Although it has a much more boring backdrop visually and the random monster enounters are far more annoying, I just found it a much easier game to process and understand, at least from a starting out point of view.

But as I said, I prefer more Oblivion. If you can get over it's free forminess then it's quite a fun game.

Fallout <3
Admittedly, oblivion is excellent too, but it is very fantasy, and after playing so many final fantasy games i've become sick of them xD
Fallout is a very hard game, but on the highest difficulty with a bit of patience is brilliant, though completely terrifying when a ghoul jumps out from the shadows

That said, Fallout is also a great game, so it's just down to personal preference =]

I've just found out what it is that makes playing Fallout 3 so unbearable for me!
Turns out it was graphical problems in the game and not my ancient tv

I think this video says it all
http://www.eurogamer.net/videos/exclusive_fallout-3_ps3360-comparison-video

I've said it before - the graphics on that game literally do give me a headache,
and because of that i have to make a constant effort to try and ignore it which completely destroys the immersion!

When i look at the Xbox 360 version though i actually think it looks like a game that i could really enjoy and have fun exploring. It's a shame i can't have that with the ps3 version

Now that i've figured out that it's not just me with these graphical problems, i have no idea how any of you can play it

Fallout 3 was a pretty big dissapointment for me...

The game just wasn't very compelling. Also, the PS3 version of this game is absolutely garbage...

I primarily play the 360 version, and used to own the disc to the PC version...

Never got around to modding the PC version though :[

Oblivion on the other hand is pretty decent, even though it has some of the most laughably awkward character animation I've EVER seen in a videogame, and a lack of deep atmosphere...

I recently imported Demon's Souls, and must say it's impressive and haunting to say the least. I think the surreal atmosphere excuses the COMPLETELY ABSURD boss fights...

My god, that red dragon on the bridge is HARRRRDDDDDDDDDDD

Me too. I'm a Kajeet thief/assassin. First time I use the bow, too, which I think is a horrible weapons inside all those ruins etc. but it's good fun.

Never understood how the spell system works nor do I see the point of alchemy. I just steal all food stuff I can find, mix a random potion out of it and sell it legally.

I've never played Fallout, but I've seen it played, and in the words of an old internet fad "It's just Oblivion with guns!" The problem is, from the little bit I've seen of F3, I still prefer Oblivion. True, I'm something of a fantasy nerd, but Fallout just didn't have anything that would remotely interest me. I guess I'd just rather beat things with a sword then shoot things with a machine gun...2009-07-06 19:02:00

Fallout isn't Oblivion with guns though, it's something new. I has its own style and atmosphere.

A problem I found in oblivion was that as long as I had my uber sword I could kill anything without hesitation. With Fallout 3 (especially with the ammo weight mod) I am always on my toes no matter what level I am.

I'd have to disagree with that. I'm level 16 at the moment, have about 11,000 caps, about 2,000 ammo for my pulse rifle (and loads for the guns I carry but don't use) and about 200 stimpaks... nothing keeps me on my toes really (though perhaps the ammo weight mod would do that).

Creating weapons is keeping me interested (I need something to collect, I have between 5 and 40 of every part needed to create every weapon) and finding new places and the stories behind those places. Like Agatha's Song was excellent, I absolutely loved the holotapes and emails on the computers... was kinda sad and really had me immersed in the world. Also some of the random encounters (eg. the one with Donovan) were excellent.

I've found that it takes a long time to get into the game but once you do it really is excellent. I think the custom weapons are probably one of the most rewarding parts of the game and once you make your first Railway Rifle, Schichkebab and Dart Gun I think anyone would be hooked .

I think... I think I may actually prefer it to Oblivion :eek::eek: Once you get into it they are actually quite different games.

Fallout 3 is the overall better game for sure. I mean they are both great games, but Fallout 3 has so much more to offer. I mean the combat is hundred times better in Fallout 3, there are over 100 unique items (only 1 in the entire game) in FO3 while, there probably only about 10 in Oblivion.

The thing that most dissapointed me most about Oblivion is how dumbed down it is compared to its predecessor Morrowind (which I prefer over both Oblivion and FO3).

The trophies are the only reason i haven't sold Fallout 3
I'm keeping it with the possibility that i'll play it one day and actually start enjoying it!

I did try something new on it a few days ago.
Instead of just doing the main quest i thought i'd do some exploring, and did the Oasis quest
It was quite fun but once i'd completed it i didn't feel any reason to carry on playing, it was just back to feeling lost and bored

Just got to level 20 in Fallout 3 a few days ago and without the goal of gaining exp, levelling up and getting extra skill points and perks I feel a lack of motivation in continuing. I was going to get the platinum but now I'm considering waiting until September when Broken Steel comes out before continuing to play. I'm sick of killing things, unlocking doors and hacking computers and not hearing the "ka-ching" that usually accompanies such actions.

Anyone else stop playing on reaching level 20?

not for me, i was determined to get the platinum, i did every trophy before that and then leveled to 19 right before it and used the here and now perk 3 times to get the level 20 trophies and then after that all i had was the final main questline quest, so i did that, maybe it's because i was obsessed with the game for a while.2009-07-19 16:03:00

I really like both. They're both very nice game with real decent mod support.

Ever since I played morrowind it's become kind of a custom for me to make a house for my character with the editor.

Personally, I love Oblivion with Shivering isles. SI is really silly, but is also so much darker than Cyrodiil is. But fallout 3 is a fine game too, I'll to wait for them to sell that one edition with everything in it.

Recently, I've changed my mind and much prefer FallOut 3. I have one problem though: I always seem to be low on everything. I'm usually low on ammo, health, and caps. However, I enjoy the game much more than I do Oblivion just because it is more 'my' type of game.2009-07-23 21:14:00
