Little Big Magic Ball (with photos)

Archive: 6 posts

Hi all,

I've just published a Magic Ball -level.

Level-name: Little Big Magic Ball
PSN: Ygg_Barasil

Short description (for those who have not played Magic Ball):
Keep the ball in the air by moving a platform left or right. Hit blocks to make points.

Two screens attached. One of the layout, another of the building process.

This was a real cable-spaghetti to build, but it works very well.

The plan was to have an optional theme at the start of the level but based on all the cables in use already, I've sticked to one theme: space.

You got 5 balls to make a highscore. Good luck!

Hi Barasil, I just played this level and it is very well made! I found it very difficult but fun so it's all good. I do have a suggestion though....

I found controlling the bat was too slow. Having to move to the correct sponge and the grab it to make the bat move just took too long and I had usually dropped the ball by the time the bat started moving.

So here is my suggestion... you could you make a circle or square of sponge (actually the lighter the better so floaty material might be better) with a hole in the middle just big enough for sackboy to get inside, lets call this the "control shape".

This control shape rests on a surface of glass and has elastic attaching it to solid blocks a short distance away on each side (left and right).

In the hole in the control shape is a jetpack. You can then place proximity switches in positions which allow sackboy to control the bat when he flies left or right moving the shape with him. The great thing is, when you stop flying in a direction, the shape returns to the centre position and the bat stops moving! So all you have to do to control the bat is push left or right on the stick....

The control shape would have to be on the front layer to make sure sackboy cant escape it, and you could make it a grab switch to make the next ball appear. You would just need some way to get out of the shape once you have used all your balls....

Wow, sorry I got a bit carried away there ... when I have an idea I just run with it... well, it's just an idea , I dont even know if it would work as I have never built anything like this, but I think it would make your game a lot more fun if it does! :hero:

Wow! that is an insane amount of switches!

I really like this game, there have been so many variations of it, but it's one of my favourites.

I played it through once and didn't do so well, so just restarted the level and managed to make #3 on the high score board! go me

I really liked the effort put into it and found it enjoyable to play, although for me and my reaction times the switched for the paddle were a little difficult to master.

I agree with chillum in that making an easier to control paddle would make it generally more enjoyable to play, but on the whole a really good idea

I gave it 4 stars and tagged it 'satisfying' Going back to see if I gan get higher

Hey TC, I played your level and enjoyed it. I believe I have the high score now, beating even you

I had a couple issues with it, and I'm not sure how you would fix them, but I'll at least let you know what they are

1) Sometimes the ball would get stuck between the moving platform and the paddle. I don't know if I'm using the right terminology Anyway, yeah, it sucks when the ball is stuck there because you basically loss that life. Maybe move the paddle closer to the platform?

2) Many times the ball would hit the corners or sides of the blocks and nothing would happen. I don't know if this is intentional, but in every version of the game I've played, if you hit the sides or corners, the block would be destroyed. I'm still new at the game so I have no idea how to help you fix this. But if you could, that would be nice.

3) Is there a reason why there are those two yellow triangle things? In all the versions of the game I've played, they are not there. You don't have to take them out, I'm just curious why they are there. Your own personal twist to the game?

4) Instead of using two sponges as switches, I think it would be easier to control the paddle with a 2-way switch.

I don't know what else to say. You did a great job. I feel so useless right now since I can't come up with more stuff to suggest to you, but I hope whatever I have written helps.

Since you're doing a F4F, check out my level, and let me know what you think.

I see that there are some controlling issues... I tried first with a 2-way switch, but that's even slower then the current sponge-solution. I ended up with a 2-way "sponge-switch" that controls a 2-way switch, but I can try to make the platform move faster to see if that helps.

If the ball gets stuck, you have already lost. I can try to remove "the feeling of a cheap loss".

The yellow triangles are added simple to avoid that the ball keeps going straight up all the time (which I could see during the testing of the level).

And about hitting the blocks from the side... Ehm, I know. To fix it I must add two more mag-switches on each block, and have a 3-way OR-gate that controls each block and the points. In total that will be around 384 cables, and I don't think my head is capable of that much work

Feedback on other levels coming tonight.

Fantastic game! Heavy wired levels are ultimately this good. It's really challenging for me. It must have taken awhile to figure out how to operate a piston with two grab switch sponges, but i think it would have been more effective to use a simple 3-way switch to operate the bouncer. The controls are just too sensitive and I find myself grabbing the wrong sponge. Moving them close to each other so that your sackboy doesnt even have to walk would work too. All in all, fun minigame and I like the picture that all the blocks make.
