Sack Full of Dollars (A Western) Now with pics!

Archive: 18 posts

First off, my PSN is AceDaCase. So feel free to contact me for any reason about anything on PSN.

I have created a level called "Sack Full of Dollars" which was inspired by various spaghetti westerns. It isn't too complicated, mostly basic platforming. I'd put it at about a medium difficulty.

Basically I'm posting this for suggestions on how I can improve this and future levels. There was a point where people said that it was too difficult in the middle so I added an infinite spawn. I'm still not sure if I should have even done that. So, feedback on whether you think that it is needed or not would be nice. And I seem to have a hard time creating enemies that are actually fun to fight. So any suggestions there would be immensely appreciated.

That's about it! I hope you enjoy my level, and I hope it is as fun as I think it is ^.^

I'll check this out asap as I love westerns, Infact I started a couple of days ago making new stuff for just the same sort of level.

So far i've made a stagecoach, covered wagon , saloon and 2 teepees, totem poles and red indians.

Unfortunately i've got all these sat in a mostly blank level while i build everything and the thermo is up to half already. I've no idea how i'm going to make any level for gameplay with what's left as i still have several buildings to make for the town section.

Yeah, mine is mostly in a town. Its that "evil bandits have overrun the town and the man with no name has to come and liberate it" kind of western.

I just need to figure out how to make the enemies more interesting lol.

I'm just glad I finally registered and people will at least try my level! The LBP forums on the standard gaming sites are pretty dead with only a handful of regulars. It's a nice change!

Hi . I've played your level and here is my feedback

Pros :
Nice use of sepia lighting.
Pretty good design in general.
Good touch with the townsfolk rewarding you for helping them.
Like the humour ( the guys being hanged at the start was well done ). I just hope that doesn't get moderated.

Cons :
The stampeding horse part was way too difficult especially for an early part in the level. I would use an infinite life checkpoint there or just make it easier.
The part at the top of the stairs with the jump over the fire also was too difficult simply because it was impossible to see where there was a safe area to jump to. I was on my last life and only got across by pure blind luck when I landed in a safe spot by some fluke.
The part where you have to rescue the woman by popping the bubbles needs tweaking. I popped the first 2 and then jumped up above to get the last one but I landed on the lift that goes up to the boss. I jumped down again to finish rescuing her and it was totally dark,I couldn't see a thing.

Overall :
Great level ( I love the theme because I've always loved Westerns anyway ) that just needs a bit of tweaking in the places I've mentioned.

I can't offer any help with the enemies i'm afraid because I totally suck at making them. I could do with some help in that department myself.

I don't require feedback but if you want to try any of the levels in my sig that would be appreciated.

Thanks for the feed back! Alright, so I DO need an infinite spawn there. I guess it just seems easy to me since I play tested it a thousand times while making it.

I'll try out one of your levels once i get back from building a shed (IRL not in LPB ).

I think this falls under the guidelines for double posting, if not, I apologize in advance.

I have fixed (or at least think I have) the problems you ran into. I made the horses in the stampede move slower and spawn less frequently, while also using an infinite spawn for that section.

I made the jump at the top of the stairs have a larger area to safely land. I hope I fixed the part you were reffering to.

I made the top bubble which held up the woman a tad lower, so it is easier to get on our first swing through.

If you could run through it one more time to see if I got everything you were talking about you'd be my hero!

Oh! And I'm going to play one of you levels right now and msg you with feedback =D

Sorry mate , I just tried again but gave up trying to get past the stampeding horses after about 30 attempts. You've made it harder i'm afraid.

I can see you've slowed them down which is great but as far as i can tell they must be emitting at the same rate because now they're grouped closer together. Every time I thought I might do it I encountered 3 horses side by side taking up all 3 layers which made it impossible to get past.

Take a look yourself and see what I mean.

Dangit! I'll get back on it tonight... I could have sworn I slowed the rate at which they emitted. I'm going to have to double check and see what went wrong. I'm at work now so it'll be a bit.

Sorry for wasting your time with all of those attempts at the stampede.

EDIT: I see what happened. Somehow the changed rate of emission was not saved. I must have rewinded while doing something else to the level. Anyways.. I fixed it (I hope!) and I hope it is at least playable now!

The setting is pretty good. The gallows was a nice touch and the town itself looks nice.

The bit with the fire at the top of the stairs isn`t great though. The camera angle as you walk in the door hides the first block of fire you get to.

The camera angle at the boss is also not great. If you pull the camera back but keep is side on, you`ll get to see the boss as well as be able to judge distances. The camera pulled away to the side kinda makes things awkward as I couldn`t even see the brains in the mouth as I was shooting at them.

Alrighty! Thanks for the feeback! I'll fix the angles on those two spots when I get back from picking up a friend, then I'll try out one of your levels!2009-06-15 23:30:00

I'm trying your levels and there is nothing you can do to stop me! Mwahaha! Besides of course deleting your levels, which I do not condone.

Edit: Just republished the level fixing the camera angles mentioned above.

played this after providing 12 hours of phone based tech support.
probably not a good idea on my part.
some of it was a bit aggravating, but not so much that i disliked it.
I managed to die to the boss twice (as in restart) before i realized there was safety behind the little wall, but i'm sure that was mostly my fault. however, where that checkpoint is he got some free twofers against me.
not that i can really talk there, the checkpoints on my tentacle boss are pretty spitefully placed.
On the positive side, the level the theme is well done. Good to see sepia in use.
hanging was awesome, but once i saw it i expected to shoot someone down from being hanged..... of course i spent my day half wondering if there was gonna be a part where you shoot some dudes hat down the street too.
shoot outs were good.
boss once i got my butt outa the fire was a good shootout, i liked that you kinda gotta charge for the lowest brain.
mini quests were good idea.
lots of little details.

oh yeah some of your townsfolk are naked?

Naked?? I'm trying to think...

Probably the guy who wants chicken... and the guy that asks you to save his wife?

I'll check it out. Any nude sackpeople are pure accident, and I hope the fabrics that were left exposed were in no way offensive =D

I really like all the detail you put into your level. I was immediately shocked as soon as I saw those gallows kill the townsfolk. You should make an extremely morbid level with the same sort of things such as the woman being tethered from the walls. Really push the good grief to the limit, you know? All of the levels in LBP are getting either too alieny or cutesy. We need something with an edgy touch. If you build on of those I'd come back for a couple plays. Overall, the style was outstanding. Some pistons on the final boss could be made invisible. I enjoyed how the banditos dropped their guns when they died. Those horses are atrocious but they are more fun to look at than realistic ones.

Five Stars for the hanging!

...

Thanks for the great feedback! Yeah, I originally made this level right before the creator pack 1, so I've been having to go around hiding things, I guess I missed the pistons on the boss!

I tried to make realistic horses that actually ran using their legs but I gave up. So, I made these ridiculous, ugly, and spiked horses that made demon sounds mixed in with the regular. Oh well, it worked.

I'll check out Jerkball tomorrow morning, its 2:20 am here! Gotta sleep!

There is a part in the bar where you go up the stairs and debris falls down, I almost lost all my lives on this bit becuase the debris fell in a way that made it almost impossible to get across, I eventually managed it by burning myself into the middle of two bits of debris and then jumping and burning myself on another bit before landing safely.

the section after you've swung into the bar and saved the mans wife, I found ti really hard to swing to that platform from those lights, perhaps lower the last one a bit. also there was a visable key switch on the plaform.

the boss looked impressive but was a pain to play, I couldn't really see what I was meant to be shooting or what plane it was on, I kept falling off the platform back into the bar, and whenever I respawned I would get shot straight away. I think that fight is letting it down. I died on the boss and haven't played again.

other than that it was good, I loved the look of the level, so much in fact I even dressed myself up in a cowboy costume to play it. (my sackboy that is)

3 stars but it still needs work

Just played it again Ace and had the same problems as groble I'm afraid.

I got to the boss but could hardly get a shot in. As soon as I got killed the first time I just lost every life after that as soon as I respawned. I didn't even get chance to move !!

The problem after freeing the wife and getting to the platform up to the boss was because you have the teabags linked together so every time you swing on the middle one it moves the last one away from you making it really difficult to get to.
