How about a visit to the Zoo?

Archive: 22 posts

Hi there all I'm brand new here, signed up last night, and was told to make a thread here to showcase my (only) level... so here's a little info on it:

It's called 'Welcome to the Zoo' and it's just a simple level, nothing too taxing, I basically just wanted to make something cute and easy and see what sort of things I could do.

So, it's a first attempt, and, as I say, the only one I've made so far, but I enjoyed making it and think it's pretty cute.

So, please feel free to play it - it's a points-fest - and leave feedback, which I will be glad to reciprocate as I love exploring LBP and making new friends

Sorry for lack of pictures etc. but I'm new here, still finding my feet!

I'm new here too. Welcome! I'll play your level and let you know what I think.

EDIT: Well, I'm stuck. lol, yeah I'm new to LBP. I can't really even get into the Zoo at all. I need a ticket, and I'm guessing the ticket is somewhere above me, but I don't see and stairs to get up. I'm going to keep looking around and see if I can get up there.

The square Green Sponge with leaves attached right? Yeah that's the one I brought him and now I don't know what to do next.

Hi,

Just played your level. To be your first, it's rather good. Better then my first

Some few tips that can make it even better:
- Try to "hide" the dissolve material with some stickers, as it don't look good without. I.e. brown sticker on the tree, green sticker on the grass, etc...
- Try to hide all anti-material out of the screen, as this neither looks good.
- Really a minor thing, but also hide all switches and bolts (as it looks better hidden IMO).
- Give a little hint when you have fed the giraffe (maybe in form of a text-bubble with camera-view at the new section unlocked).
- Add some challenges. Only way I could die, was if I jumped into the alligator-pit on purpose.

And that's all I recall... Keep making levels as this is a good first attempt.

Tried your level the other night with a much younger friend I play online with and he thought it was fun. For a first level it's not bad at all. I enjoyed your characters, especially the giraffe and the octopus in the aquarium was cute too. I also liked your ticket idea.

I liked that you had slightly hard to get to buttons for the big bubble areas. My friend was really excited to find the buttons and to grab all the bubbles. It's a good idea to keep younger players involved and motivated - they love bubbles.

The trees in the aviary are nice but in a few places it's very easy to be squished by getting into areas that are too small. You may want to adjust a few of those in areas that players will be jumping around. Also the front/back ramps in the tree trunks are a good idea but the back ones are very hard to see. When you dissolve the moss could you put a light that lights up or a magic mouth with a cut scene to show exactly where the player should go next. Some players will find the ramps pretty easy but since the level seems to appeal to younger players it's a little hard for them.

The giraffe puzzle is cool too but when you bring him the grass can you put a task complete sound so the player knows they are done with that task.

Overall I'd say it's a cute level and a very good first level. Keep up the hard work and thanks for sharing it!

Thanks so much for the feedback guys.

Do you know if I can edit the level now that it's published? or do I have to delete and republish the edited version?

All you have to do is edit your level, and publish it over the old version. It will overwrite on its own.

That was pretty impressive for a first try. I don't really support the use of Mediamolecule's objects. However, for a first time, there was plenty of enjoyable platforming. It's a shame the music didn't start until i reached the aviary. The giraffe didn't even thank me. What a jerk!

F4F please!

Hi Pippylouise, well I just played your level and I didn't know what to do after giving the giraffe the leaves....

but up until that point it was amazingly good for a first level, you have some really imaginative ideas. I'm looking forward to seeing what else you create as your skills develop!

Anyway, I would suggest giving players some kind of guidance as to where they should go or what they should do after bringing the leaves to the giraffe.

Well done!

Thanks navy

I had to use some of Mm's stuff cos my therm. was overheating spectacularly... I am going to tweak the Giraffe a little so that you know to head up to the aviary after giving him the leaves. There's not supposed to be music where the Giraffe is but I may put a little in if people think it'd be better.

I will be on LBP this afternoon (it's 11am here right now) so will be sure to check out your levels and F4F them

I appreciate the kind words guys

I'm editing my level right now but don't know how to put a cutscene in to show the aviary opening...2009-06-16 12:58:00

ok, have edited the level:

- I tried to disguise the dissolve material but still make it look like moss on the tree.

- I changed the little platforms in the aviary to larger, hopefully easier-to-get-on-without-getting-caught-and-squished-in-scenery ones.

- I added a 'tack complete' noise to trigger when the giraffe has the leaves, and a speech bubble to say thanks and direct you to the aviary.

- I put a sign in the tree pointing up to the aviary but don't know how to get a cutscene so if anyone can help that'd be great. I tried to trigger an invisible mouth not saying anything to get the cutscene but it didn't work

Anyway - off to play the F4F levels from posters on here, thanks you guys!

Nice level, great for a first attempt.

Too many point bubbles for me, but I guess it's for the kiddies.

Would be even better if you added a monkey or two.

I finished your level today. Sorry it took me so long to get around to it

Overall this is very impressive for a first level. You use a lot of things that I didn't even want to think about till my second level (switches mainly).

I felt that the only way you could improve, is just on the visuals and the length. It was a really short level and I know very well that a Zoo should have more animals. Tigers, Lions, Elephants, Zebras, etc. Your Zoo idea has a lot of potential but you haven't fully explored it. I would like to see a new Zoo level from you were you cover a lot more animals.

I also felt like the visuals could be a bit better. In the aviary especially, you have lots of bird stickers, but not enough actual birds. I see that you put some actual birds there, but I would like to see more.

And yeah, there were a lot of Score Bubbles. This isn't really a bad thing I guess, but I would like it if you spread them out more. Maybe make it so that it is a challenge to get a multiplier going. Right now it just seems like they are all in big piles.

Another thing that I always recommend to people (or I try to recommend by many times I forget :blush is to add secret areas. These are really how you get people to replay your level if they liked it. If people see you have a large score, they will try to find out where you stashed those Score Bubbles. Again, I stress that they have to like your level first, but assuming they do, this adds another layer of replayability.

You might also want to add cages if you ever add more animals. I mean, it just seems odd that animals are just prancing around in a Zoo...

I loved your aquarium idea and the rest your concepts, but I just feel like you need to flesh them out more. Like in the butterfly area. ADD MORE BUTTERFLIES!!! Also make them move about and stuff.

There's a lot of potential, and I'm looking forward to what you make next.

Hi pippylouise and welcome.

I'll check out your level later tonight and would appreciate feedback on my new level which is called Sheriff Sack : Cleaning up the town of Sackwood.

Thankyou.

Hey Gulliver - Thanks for the feedback

I really wanted to do more with the level but due to the thermometer overheating I couldn't really do as much as I liked...

I was debating whether to split it up into like a series of levels, like just have a couple of areas and then a key to the next level, you know? I think I will, but I won't be able to make a start on it until Monday as I am about to head off to work now for 8 hours and I'm working tomorrow too *shakes fist at needing to pay bills*

So, yeah, I think I will expand it, make more of my own creatures, add more detail and generally try and make it a bit better

Hi Mistervista Thanks! I hope you enjoy it! I will try to play your level this evening after work

Hi Pippy. I've played your level and here is my feedback

Pros :

Great theme. Anything with animals is a winner for me

Nicely paced and fun gameplay

Good use of the layers with the tree climbing section

Nice looking giraffe

Plenty of points up for grabs which helps maintain interest and aid replayability

Cons :

The bolt was showing on the neck of the giraffe. It's much better to hide all bolts except on rare occasions when they look better visible

After the giraffe when I first tried to jump up to the tree there was a green grassy foreground there obstructing the view of the tree and I jumped over the other side and couldn't get back so had to use the try again feature. Didn't affect me too much but for anyone looking to collect all prizes if there is an aced prize it's annoying to have to kill yourself like that.

A few too many leaf decorations and story mode stuff although I'm not going to criticise too much for that because it is your first level and is much better than my first one.

When you do the sticker switch and grab the bird on the winch it doesn't seem to go down far enough to see where to drop. I just let go and hoped for the best.

Overall :

A very good level , especially for a first and shows great potential for your future creations. I look forward to seeing your next one and hopefully some more homemade objects.

If you're thinking of putting any more animals in or making another animal level I would be more than happy to share some of mine with you or make some on demand.

If you take a look at a level of mine called 'THE BEAST' you'll see some animals I made in there. It's not a level as such. It was just a contest to paint a friends Monster truck but I wanted to add a little interest to the level instead of just putting a painted truck in a blank boring level.

If you want any of those animals or others just let me know.

By the way with regards to the problem you're having with the aviary cutscene what sort of switch have you connected to the mouth. If you want it to work similar to the cutscene in my Sackwood level where it shows you the water towers and bird's nests I used a sensor switch on the bottom of the windmill set to on/off and gave it quite a big radius so that it doesn't disappear too soon. You also need to utilise the camera zone feature on the mouth itself and set it to show the view you want and with zero player tracking. Hope that helps.
