Emitter Engines by eustoma

Archive: 11 posts

Check this level - currently high on Cool Levels, so you might have run across it.

If you're a creator, this is invaluable - eustoma details an awesome way to move things without using connectors - emitting objects at velocity! But I'm just the messenger; go check out the level (Mail Trolley Ride) by eustoma to see an excellent demonstration inside a beautiful level.

If you're not a creator, you can at least get a chuckle out of the way the engine is described - the 'intro' (description of how it works) is brilliantly made, with moving engines timed to the text - I must stop, and you must see this.

Seriously, just go see this for yourself.

That was a great level. I liked how the stage dropped down and the little figurines played out what was being said. I've never thought to move objects like that, its an interesting concept.2009-06-13 22:11:00

Thanks for recommending this level, I just played it and I love it to bits. For a demonstration level, the gameplay is great and the design is just superb. And the explanation of the mechanics is really well done, really clear and easy to understand.

I'm curious though, can anyone enlighten me as to what the benefits are of this kind of engine compared to a standard motor bolt?

It's possible to set up a bunch of different speeds and directions with this method, while with a motor bolt you only get speed or direction.2009-06-19 18:10:00

Also you can get much more power for the size, and you don't have to worry about traction. I was actually playing around with emitter engines before I saw this level. Emitting a medium size stone block at full speed you can make a car that can cross the entire level in only a second or two.2009-06-19 18:58:00

Ah, that makes sense.

I'm just so used to seeing the same old motorbolt/rocket vehicles, it really is such a nice change to see a completely innovative technology like this being used. And its benefits sound interesting, I can't wait to see how the use of emitters develops in other levels and how people apply it.

Using this method, I concocted a box that can sail from one end of the level to the other fairly quickly, and it's very easy to control, complete with a brake. If I post it in a level, it will be on the PSN Name BSprague called "Emitter Engine Demo".

EDIT: Level is up.

Yeah, this is great. I also suggest playing Eustoma's other levels and hearted levels, not to mention the hearted levels of the creators of Eustoma's hearted levels. lol Make sure you have some time set aside because you won't want to put the controller down. There are tons of great levels here that hardly have any plays and some of them are like 4 months old. Pretty sad really... 2009-07-03 19:20:00

I never made a tech demo for the idea, but I mentioned it in my Fountain of Youth thread as another of the many uses I discovered for paintballs back in the day when I first figured out you could capture them - https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=t=7235

1/08/09 "I accidentally discovered a paint powered vehicle in the process as well - the high velocity paintball stream started pushing it's base everytime they hit the walls of the unglued fountain (early in the build process) and it would slide along like it had wheels and a rocket."

That level's been moved to my alt account ninjazone.
