Dragon's Lair Series

Archive: 5 posts

Hey, my Dragon's Lair series contains some of my favorite levels I've ever made. However it did not recieve as many plays or hearts as I wish it would have. Well anyways it consists of three different levels that all have a connected storyline. The storyline is that you are the chosen one sent to save the inhabitants of Talamar from an evil,fire-breathing dragon. However as soon as you get there complications come up. The townspeople believe that you are a witch after falling from the sky from another world. They take you hostage and cage you in the dungeon in the castle of Talamar. You must find a way to escape and once you do.... To find out the rest of the story play the whole series and see what happens! Below I will show you pics from each level and also post video links:

Notes: If you are trying to play Part 3 the first time you try to get into the level it will most likely say "Failed to Load Level." Just keep pressing play until you get in. I don't know why it says this and if anyone knows why please tell me.Thanks!

Hey DRLONG,
Your pictures are not showing up... not sure if you haven't put them in yet, or what? This looks like a fun little trilogy, and I will give it a go either tonight or tomorrow.

About the level loading error, have you tried just republishing? I had this happen once before, but I don't remember what I did (pretty sure I just republished).

Edit: Alright, I'm going to give a rundown as I play the level:

Part One
The townspeople intro was awesome. The camera in the cell was a bit wonky. You can't see what's to the left all that well. I had trouble getting out of the cell because I thought "behind" meant in the back plane. Perhaps "next to" would make it clearer, your choice. I kept trying to jump on top... Is there a way to make the shovel fall to the left side of the person, so you don't have to fight through the character to get to the pit? The slime pits look nice, but perhaps make them not perfectly round. The jumping back and forth part was a bit harder because the camera follows the player too much - try putting a camera centered on that section with follow set to low. The level of detail in the castle is awesome! The book puzzle was very well done. It was hard to see the numbers/letters, but with the shelf in the back - it was possible. Also, the sound playing helped. Great puzzle. Cool, bookshelf passage!! Your knight characters are fantastic. The speech bubble right after the king flashed before I could read what it said. Alright the cannon/bomb section: This may be where you are getting your lack of hearts, 3 star rating, etc. for the this one. It's not immediately clear what you have to do. Also, because the parapet blocks the view of the player, they have no idea what plane they are in. It took me a good 15 tries to get it. The normal player would probably give up here and dock your score accordingly. Not sure how you'd fix it, but I'd recommend taking a look at it. Your drawbridge looks out of place - the wood is too light. Loved the ending, it was a great touch. All in all, it was a great level up until that bomb/cannon section. It was pretty short, but there are 3 parts, so I'm not complaining. 4 stars for its potential.

Part Two
Ah, you got me. I don't think the spikes are necessary. As a player, I would have rather been killed by fire, like later in the level with the collapsing bridge. It irks me a little to see all this detail, but see mostly straight edges (the floor and roof). That's the difference between good and great... The bridge part was very fun. Glad I made it! I fell into the fire on the right after the halfway point, but didn't die - had to intentionally run into the fire (also, it was very laggy - too much going on?) With the bright light there, its tough to see that there is a ledge behind the save point. I really liked the stalagtite(mite?) part, but it bothered me that there were the same 2 copied and flipped for the section - make them a bit unique. When backtracking across the gap, I fell in the fire a few more times and it was so laggy that it didn't register the fire sometimes. Hmm... though I had to backtrack, but I'm not sure where to go... After 10 minutes of swinging on the stalagatites, I couldn't find this hole in the wall. Sorry, but I'll have to finish this later, when you tell me what to do.

Part Three
Failed to load level, but got it to work! I like that the stairs are not all the same - simple to do, but very effective. Oh-noes, a dragon! That little intro was something I hadn't seen before - nicely done. The fire breathing was awesome - that was a nice effect. The plasma balls were a little cheap. I would've like to see somewhere you can hide when he shoots - I died a lot, and there didn't seem to be anything I could do about it. Oh no, long flat floors = not good. The treasure room was nicely done, but I feel like I'm about to be ambushed. Awesome Scene with the fire and the sled. My sled did not stick the landing, so I couldn't make it over the gap and had to restart. ROUND2: I got to the sled spot - I didn't get the "hang on" message before, nor the camera to show me what was down there, so not sure what happened there. Again, the fire part was awesome. It was lagging, so it was like it was in slow motion. My sled landed upside down again, but it flipped over one of the drops. Finished. My only gripe with the boss was there was nowhere to hide. Adding in somewhere to hide would even give you an excuse to make it longer (as I wanted to look at that dragon for as long as possible - it was brilliant). Awesome level - 5 stars are hearted. It deserves its rating, and I don't know why more people haven't played it!

Great trilogy, capped off with a fantastic ending. I will have to give level 2 another playthrough once you let me know what to do! I would appreciate if you took a look at my F4F level Aperture Science, in my sig.

Thanks!

Hey man thnx for the great review! I will try to leave feedback for your level as soon as possible! Also I will try to mske some parts a little more clear on what to do. By the way, I don't know if you noticed on the dragon boss but technically there is a safe spot. All you have to do is grab onto those hanging thingys! (I know the plasma balls are a little cheap but I needed him to have another attack and I couldn't think of anything lol)2009-06-17 02:31:00

Oh, it makes sense. It's counter intuitive to drop the paintinator to be safe...

Also, what was I missing in part 2? Or are you going to make me try again with changes?
