LBP knock offs

Archive: 14 posts

With the success of LBP I am wonder whether we will see a boom in developers creating these new genre of games.

I for one would like to see something similar to the PC app game maker for the ps3

I would also like something like LBP but by far more complex and more powerful. I think we have seen from LBP that there are some very talented people in the community.

while a highly powerful creation tool might not be to everyones ability some one who doesn't have the skill or ability to create could still buy the game and for the cost of one game have access to millions of user created games.

I am sure there are a lot of people who play user made LBP levels but have never used the editor or just don't understand how it works.

I can't ever see a game maker being made available on a console. Since they have to make it controller compatible, any coding would be a complete pain and would make the audience for such a product very small. I can't see any way for them to make a game maker in a way that is suitable for a console controller.

What kind of things would you like to see added to LBP to make it more complex and powerful?

Well I guess level creation started before LBP with map making... but certainly not at the level that LBP gives us. I think it would be great if more games moved this direction. I'd like more planes in this game for starters.2009-06-11 13:39:00

Agree'd completely!

It would also be nice to have moving npcs. So level creator's characters can seem more emotive. I would love to see more games in "user generated content" arena. I guess my only hesitation would be how much are they going to supply in-game and how much will the player have to purchase in order to get the full scope of the level creation tool.

I've noticed that a lot of console games are coming with level editors now. Off the top of my head : Flock!, ModNation Racers, Under Siege, LBP PSP. And I think it's a good trend. On the PC, devoted modders used to make buggy, semi-legal level/resource editors for PC games, but the same thing can't be done on consoles.

I remember I greatly extended the lifetime of DooM 2 back in the day by making levels for it. I made a DooM level of my high school invaded by demons, and I even made a whole Star Wars TC.

I think the more customization allowed in a game, the longer it'll live on.

I'm not talking about move the sticks press X hey presto I made a level.

It would be key board and mouse predominantly and game pad for actually playing the games and a simple but powerful scripting language for sum custom events or sub-routines.

contain a graphics editor for custom textures graphics
a tool for making 3d shapes
a sound studio for making and editing sounds

the game would ship with say 15 to 30 mini games of various types to show what can be done and keep people busy. hardcore gamers then start developing and before you know it a community of people making all types of games, shooters, beat'em up's, rpg etc. and millions of new games every week. (just like LBP a lot of crap, but also some astounding work.)

DLC wouldn't be essential as with the right tools you could make anything you wanted but sound packs textures and occasional developer release mini games wouldn't hurt either.

I'm not trying to say improve LBP or LBP2, I am talking about a completely new project aimed at amateur game developers and giving the PS3 network access to some "home brew" this could also open doors to game development careers.

I think user generated content is going to play a huge role in games in the future

Of course all of the above is a pipe dream at the moment but off the success of LBP there is gotta be a rival developer out there thinking how they can make there own lbp and get rich

I made a DooM level of my high school

Can you say Columbine?... Seriously i am only joking ;D

That could work actually
I remember an early PS2 demo having darkbasic on it!

It'd be cool to have a more powerful version of that with the ability to import graphics and share programs/games online

the editor aspect wouldn't be for the average person but I am sure i wasn't the only 13 year old making basic games in high school with Basic, Logowriter or Pascal.

it would be the plethora of user made games that would be the attraction for most.

I sure do hope this will set a trend of having a level editor in most of our games. It seems to be getting there.. slowly.

If there's money to be made from an idea it will be exploited.

LBP prints money for Sony and MM with almost weekly releases of new costumes with various quantities of other items thrown in the with total cost creeping up to double the games launch price.

Developers would have to be mad to not want to get in on such a lucrative business model.

I remember seeing a presentation by MM on this subject, and I think it was Alex Evans had mentioned that LBP was just a starting point. Their real goal was to create a game experience where the user doesn't just make their own levels, but makes their own game.

I would expect that a not-so-distant, direct descendant/sequel of LBP will be all about this. Sort of like the jump from Guitar Hero to Rock Band.

I think you could pull it off. LBP's creator isn't too complicated, it gives anyone the tools to tinker and create some version of nearly anything you can come up with - as long as it's little-big-sized.

I would expect the same of a future game-creator. The obvious difference here is that making your own GAME would involve a far bigger time commitment than making your own LBP level. I'm not sure I'd be down for digging into such a huge project. Nevertheless, I'm incredibly curious and interested in where this takes us, and will without a doubt be picking up any and all future MM play/create/share "games".

Actually it would require much more devellopement and data but they could make a game where it gives the basis for different genres in the creation mode. With LBP we obviously have a creation mode thought out for "platformers". Imagine now a bigger game where LBP would only be a mode/section. You could enter in LittleBigRacing and also LittleBigShooter, LittleBigQuest and the base engine would change in each part.

What is probably not possible on PS3 is one creation mode that does everything.

Well I hope from the success of LBP, developers start to reallise that the more customisation there is in a game, the longer it'll last. It seems to be becoming bigger as a genre though, so they might actually be seeing that.2009-06-12 20:24:00
