(Contraption) Animation device ideas

Archive: 19 posts

So, I've been getting into animation recently. (Had an animation class today) I'm quite interested in the idea of animation, the idea of multiple pictures being moved fast enough so as to fool someone's eyes and mind into thinking that the picture is alive and in motion, so I figured I'd see if I could find some creative ways of animating stuff within LBP (other than the characters themselves)

Idea 1: High-Speed Horizontal Image Displayer

This would consist of an open-faced viewing box, with slats at either side. It would also involve a long strip of material, possibly with wheels attached, upon which the animation images would be placed. The goal would be to get the picture strip to move fast enough so that when it goes through the viewing box, the illusion of animation could be produced.

Idea 2: Phenakistoscope

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phenakistoscope

Basically, I would try and replicate the device mentioned in the above Wiki article. Could be a large, flat cylinder facing the screen, with a sticker of a Phenakistoscope disc placed on it, and made to spin at a fast enough speed that, again, while focusing on one area, the illusion of an animated picture is produced.

So, what do you think of these ideas?

Why no replies?

Yeah, these ideas would definately work since they are all essentially physics-based.

Stix might be mad, though. :arg:

Chazfox's ideas tend to be great ideas that no one can really add on to, so he gets only a few replies.

Seeing as he probably didn't know about Stix's version, and his is different from Stix's version (and is going to be more effective imo), I think this is a good idea.

Anyway, good idea.

Miffy. Did you read his Chaz's ideas? They are not the same as Stix's. Yes, they are both animation techniques, but Chaz has new solutions. It isn't copying at all IMO.

The Stix-Vision is basically a vertical conveyer belt that is masked to show only the screen. The images go up really fast to create the illusion of animation.

Image & Idea by Stix489 of course.

Hee, thanks ^^ I don't mind feedback. And yes, I wasn't aware of Stix-vision, but that also looks like a pretty neat idea ^^

Haha...so many mentions of me in this thread! I am flattered! xD

Don't worry guys, I'm not going to get upset or mad or suicidal because of ChazFox's awesome ideas...I must admit, they are similar to mine, only a little more effective (as mentioned already)

So, go on ahead, I'm not gonna cry These are great ideas, and I can't blame you at all...you didn't know about Stix-Vision!

(How did Stix-Vision get so famous anyway?!) xD

Those two methods are pretty good. Not sure if a Phenakistoscope is possible to implement, but it'll definitely be interesting to see in-game. At least the stickers could be easily made with a PS3-eye for that.

However, I've thought of a third way of creating animation in-game. As you can dissolve materials / make them invisible / turn them around, it's possible to create kind of a LED screen, at least a monocolor one, like the traditional pinball screen. Then you can animate with triggers that turn off/on certain 'LEDs', creating animation on the screen.

This would be soo easy if we could make the animation still images in photoshop and then import it into the game and throw the images on the belt...
but we all know thats not possible at launch...grr
so creating animation stills ingame is going to be a grind...

Superb idea - it can be realised in a number of ways. THIS is the sort of thinking I love. Keep it up!2008-09-03 19:14:00

Chaz or Stix, would you like to donate your animation devices to the LittleBigResort Store? (http://www.lbpcentral.com/forums/group.php?groupid=12)

You could get LittleBigExperience point each time someone buys your items, but I'll need to check with Cartman first if that is OK.

It looks like his first idea is the same as stix-vision. Instead of going verticle, though, it goes horizontal.2008-09-03 22:24:00

Posted idea in the LittleBigResort Store

Not promising anything though, if it is not possible to make, then I cannot donate it (obviously)
