Cleaning your PS3

Archive: 7 posts

I recently did some maintenance on my PS3, which is out of warranty. I opened it and cleaned out LOTS of dust inside the unit and inside the cooling system. I had always tried using canned air. While you can do this and see dust being blown out, it appears most of it gets lodged inside and you just get build up over time.

I also found that the Thermal Compound on the two processors, which mate against the cooling system directly via metal plates, was all dried up and crusty. Probably not doing much for heat tranfer. I cleaned this off and put on new Arctic Silver Thermal Compound.

Once I reassembled I found the air being blown out of the unit during use felt noticeably lower than it had previously. I suggest this maintenance to anyone that has a PS3 out of warranty. I will have a video of exact steps for the 20 gb version. Im not sure about internal difference of the other version systems.

Or just buy a microfibre lint free cloth to put over your PS3 when your not using it so it doesnt collect dust in the first place2009-06-15 08:53:00

The dust build up happens internally during operation when air is circulated through the system.

Keep it over the PS3 at all times, even if it's on!

Where can you get an allen-key, screwdriver or star-drive that fits a ps3, on my ps3 it is a star-drive with a cylinder in the middle so normal ones wont work

I used a small flat screwdriver that fit in two of the notches of the star but along the side of the cylinder in the middle.
