Negative Comments - What do you do with them?

Archive: 47 posts

To this point, the only comments I've ever deleted on my levels are H4H requests. But today, I got a rather nasty comment, saying my level sucked, that I suck as a creator, etc. I went to see the levels that this guy/gal had published, and they were the epitome of amateur nonsense (visible switches/sounds/dark matter, terrible level design, etc.)

So do I leave the negative comment on my level, or delete it? I don't want to be that guy who deletes anything bad about his level, but I don't really respect this person's opinion at all....

Personally, I would delete it. Definately don't retaliate because this kind of person would probably be a pain in the neck.2009-06-09 15:30:00

I'm not even deleting mine since it doesn't affect me.

Why would you feel bad because someone writes you a message on your LBP level? People are people and many are simply not worth your time. In my opinion they aren't even worth the energy I would use pressing a delete button. Doesn't it how much I don't care about people?

One of the very first tags put on my level "Media Molecules Next Level Pack" was "Rubbish" and I've got a few of those kind of comments on my levels. To be honest, I try and take no notice of them as it is most likely some little kid just getting a thrill out of writing something abusive. They know they can get away with it so they do it.Im pretty sure it has nothing tho do with your level.2009-06-09 15:33:00

I leave negative comments that I feel have SOME merit.... but I figure if people are leaving malicious messages that have no merit at all, I don't want to give them the satisfaction.

But, to each his own.

I don't really delete any sort of comments on my levels. I can't be bothered to check my levels for any h4h requests, cheap advertisements etc. and delete them. Also I respect other people's opinions on my levels. I'll only delete comments if they are just basically trolling or calling me bad as a person and creator etc.2009-06-09 15:59:00

I check all the H4H because some people don't realize that its frowned upon and there are some good budding creators. If its a true H4H only I delete it.

Negtive comments I don't delete unless they contain language that is unacceptable or offensive. I feel everyone is entitled to their own opinion and if (as you did) they check the person's levels they see the quality and blow the comment off.

I received a comment that did have unacceptable language and was advised (at another forum) to Grief the comment. Was told if they found that person to be leaving similar comments on others levels the person would be warned or banned.

I generally delete the comments if I feel that others are going to be affected by them, but I tend to leave them if they're constructive or give a reason.
If I feel they're pointless then yeah, I'll delete them
I think it all comes down to preference though, if you really feel you have a good level then go ahead and leave it, eventually someone will speak up and say something about the comment.

I got a comment on my most recent level that said "baka" ... I think they thought I didn't know what that meant. lol. (it means "stupid" in japanese)

Anyway, I'd delete it if it's mean. I am a sensitive person and if the comment is just a blatant "you suck, your levels suck you should feel bad and also please die because I hate you" then I definitely make the comment go away. If it's constructive and nice, but points out an error in the level, i'd say to leave it.

I tried to delete H4H comments, until our level got on page 1 of cool levels. Then it was just too hard to keep up. I would have had to delete ALL of the comments.

I actually reply to them in the comments. I rarely get such comments though.

I tend to do what xkappax does. I think you can sort of get an idea if it's a spam/spamish negative comment (you suck, your dog sucks, etc..) versus "constructive" and not so constructive criticism based on the level itself (your level has issues, Bad material choices and stupid theme).2009-06-09 17:09:00

I delete H4H comments. Ironically, for everyone else that leaves me a comment I tend to at least look at the moon and give a level a quick try, which often results in a heart. I also try to respond to comments in a timely fashion.

If a comment is just an insult, I'll delete it. Otherwise, it stays up. I want to encourage more comments and I think if people see a string of deleted comments they are less likely to post one themselves.

You have to be a bit careful with these, though.

There's a scam going around where a person will play your level, give you a heart.... but give you a 1 star rating to drop your rating average - in order to make it more difficult for your level to climb cool pages.

So, sometimes doing H4H is actually promoting malicious behavior.

I have some perspective on bad comments after watching my teenage boys play LBP with a friend in my home. They were 1 starring, Rubbish-ing, and leaving nasty comments on just about every level, giggling all the while.

This was some time ago, before I had published a level that I had spent weeks polishing. I have since "trained" them (through admonishments, but also... by simple virtue of my own effort and dedication to creation, and my knowledge of the Cool Pages and rating systems, they seem to have a better appreciation of the effects of such behavior). And recently the same friend was back and my younger son was playing LBP with him, and as soon as this kid started into this, he was scolded and his behavior righted by my boy.

Anyway... point is... that these sorts of comments (the spam-type insults), while a serious detriment to an effective rating system, should not be taken too seriously. Young minds don't always consider (are not always capable of considering) the whole picture and the ramifications of a few simple actions.

I would just delete them.

I wasn't particularly insulted by this comment, I just thought it was ironic considering how poor this guy's own levels are. Of course the double irony is that his lousy levels have far more plays/hearts than mine do....2009-06-09 17:20:00

I got a rather harsh comment from soneone who didn't even have any levels. Well, apart from a crappy (yet hilarious), "2012 the end of the world" level. Seriously. He said to me, "This level is crap! You suck and you'll always suck", and I deleted it, just because I didn't want his pitiful words on my level. If this was someone from this site I would quite honestly keep the comment on, but I trust that most people here would rather give constructive critisism rather than just leaving a stupid comment like the above.2009-06-09 17:23:00

I don't H4H. I just check the levels to see what's out there and if they show something really good I comment they should join LBPC. If a level is one I would like to repeat , then I heart it.

Thanks for telling me about the scam, didn't know that. It doesn't surprize me though. Unfortunately I have learned over the years how malicious and two faced people can be.

I delete spam. As xkappax said though, get yourself onto page 1 of cool levels and you`ll be pushing back the tide.

I just leave the 'you suck' comments up. I know I don`t suck (mostly) so it just makes them look like the idiot, which they invariably are.

Either that or go onto his levels and leave messages via photos hehe. Which is something I`ve never done ever. Ahem.

The sooner we can block folk from leaving comments the better.

This kind of reminds me of the part of Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back where they stop at a Mooby's internet kiosk to respond to the kids on Movie Poopshot who are bad mouthing the fictionalized representations of themselves. At the end they fly around the country beating up all the kids who trashed them.2009-06-09 18:48:00

If I got a page one I'd certainly spend some time deleting messages; it'd be a whole new minigame a post every 20 seconds I imagine.

I still have yet to reach that honour but summer holiday is in two days so I'm gonna break out LBP and see if I can make my 'Left 4 Spaff' level.

My guidelines for comment deletion:

If it has any relation to H4H then bin it,
If it is advertising a level not related to my own bin it,
If it is rude bin it,
If it is ruining a secret in your level bin it.

Totally true.... however, virtually everything on this entire site is like that, now isn't it? .

We do this for fun. Personally, even when it APPEARS I'm taking it seriously, I'm not. It's a game.

I haven't deleted any comments... I just leave them and check every so often to see how many Ozzy car level comments I get. I was thinking after a few hundred or so you get might get a trophy or something.

The reason I don't delete is what CCubbage shows above. I would hate to have tons of deleted by level author comments. What they don't see makes them wonder more.

I guess if someone put something really really rude, I might. Thankfully, the only one close to that was one that was left today saying "You are son of beach".

Who knew!?? LOL!!!

He hearted the level, so I think he was just commenting on my bad humor.

Ccubage just reminded another huge reason why I don't bother erasing bad comments. It's ridiculous that it leaves a comment "this message has been deleted". Very bad design imo.

You comment list looks just as bad as when the message was there. Also, it tells who deleted it so it's even more stupid...

I actually go and PLAY levels of the people that leave bad comments. My personal favorite was a comment left on The Fall of Winter that said "Needs Work" ... It was by an individual named krdlink. I recommend his levels to everyone actually. Were it not for him, I don't think I would have gotten the adequate inspiration for my section in 7 Days, nor would Grant have been able to complete his Drake's Misfortune Level.

I have found that 9/10 times, the people who are leaving the bad comments have very... um... interesting levels to say the least. They usually don't have any room to criticize your level. the individual I mentioned before who told me that Fall of Winter "needs work" ... well... i don't think I need to tell you that not one of his levels had an exit, and ... well. Beachballs. That's all I have to say. Beachballs.

My point in all of this is that if a comment makes you really upset, you could try playing the levels of the person who left the negative comment. It will probably make you feel a whole lot better. ^_^

WHAT IS THIS TINGLING SENSATION? It... BURNS...

In my opinion, I'd leave them behind, some people leave comments defending you, and it kinda makes the offender feel stupid especially if all the rest of the comments are (not h4h!) giving you positive feedback.

Of course, if they're coming back and asking for it, that deserves a delete button (or two)

I don't delete comments unless they are crude, or hurtful personal attacks. Why delete them? What does it matter? They are just words after all.

I myself have posted negative feedback on lousy levels, because those that intentionally make crap levels are simply taking up precious space on our Cool Levels pages, and sometimes are just wasting my air.

I left negative feedback on someones level about 3 weeks ago, not because the level was bad... but because the author was literally demanding that people give them praise for creating this level which was full of logic gates and created to help other creators which in turn results in less crappy levels for this author to play. It bugged me because a) there are quite a few logic gate levels out there created by authors made to help other creators, and b) none of those other authors had this mightier than thou attitude. So I left negative feedback stating that if the attitude were adjusted it would be a better level. The author replied on one of my levels and the comments are still there. I went to re-check what I said on their level but my comments were deleted. Why? Then I played through the level again and all the speech bubbles that irked me before had disappeared. I wasn't the only one leaving similar feedback, so I guess the author realised that they were coming off a little more self-centred than they probaly are or had intended. It's still just as decent a level as ever and in fact there are a few logic gates of their own design that are really great, but now that the changes have been made this level has gone way up in my books.

So, leaving negative feedback can be a good thing... depending on whether it's constructive or not. But hey, if you totally don't respect this guys opinion then delete away. No one will ever know exactly what he said except the two of you... others will just think it was rude slander.

That's my 2?'s.

To be honest, I just leave it there; only if it is constructive. I remember my recent level had a flood of negative comments. Most of them were, "I can't get past the lava part. It's too hard" and "Why the hell did you put TWO endings in your level? Your level went from a 5 to a 1 because of that. >_<" Yeah, the negative comments I get is usually the easily frustrated people.2009-06-10 04:35:00

It sounds callous but the best way to describe it is, I delete anything that's stupid. xD

H4H (even if they don't use that dirty 3-letter word), unconstructive criticism, and advertisements are instant deletes.

Not that i really get any comments... BUT...
The only things i delete are H4H, and anything that is highly offensive, If someone wants to leave a comment about what they think of me, fine, let em. Right now the first level i made has a wonderful "you suck" comment at the top of it Of course, the reason for that comment is somewhat of a different story, but thats besides the point.

Most comments should be taken with a grain of salt, especially the negative and non constructive ones. Don't let it ruin your day because someone left a rude notice on your level.

Sorry to hear that. One of the nasty parts about dealing with "humans".

Kinda weird that he revisits if he has so much of an issue with it. Since he left a comment and you know his PSN name have you possibly tried sending him a message first? ....that might be the wrong thing too. ..but may be worth a shot prior to reporting.

He's not worth conversing with at all. He's clearly the kind of person who would relish the negative attention. He's probably the kind of guy who plays other people's levels over and over to give them 1-star.

The sad part is that he has tons of plays/hearts on his horrible levels, which he gloats about every time he leaves a comment.
