Disc help

Erm. I'm not quite sure what to say. I was right in the middle of working on my level, when my game freezes. Now this has happened once or twice before, so I didn't think much of it. I did a hard reset, but then found that my PS3 wasn't reading my LBP disc at all. What do I do? 2009-06-09 08:15:00

Sounds to me like your Blu-Ray laser burnt out. Test other games - if you have the same issue, then that's likely the problem. I'm currently on my third Blu-Ray drive. It's cheaper to replace than it is to get repaired by Sony (unless you're still in your warranty period), so if you've got the technical skills (just some basic knowledge of hardware and common sense) that's the way to go.2009-06-09 08:59:00

If you do have to send it off to get it repaired, back up you saves - actually do that anyway, you never know what will happen if you start poking around inside As CC says, it sounds like the Blu Ray being the issue, so the USB backup facility should still be working.2009-06-09 09:09:00

I tried a few other games, but they worked fine. Only LBP wouldn't read. What's wrong?2009-06-09 09:38:00

When you put the disc in, does it recognise that there is a disc there? Or does nothing show in the system software?2009-06-09 09:46:00

Hmm, have you tried cleaning your disc then?
I know it sounds stupid but if LBP is the only disc that doesn't read...

When my PS3 stopped working it was only R2 at first but then other games stopped working.

Do you have the 60G model of PS3? If so there is a known problem with it and you should be able to get a free replacement if it's in warranty.

It's a bit tricky this one. I'm not sure why the PS3 isn't liking that one disk. Do you have any friends that have LBP who's disks you could borrow to test?

I was thinking it might be a problem with install, but I don't think that would account for a non-visible disk (IDK though). You could try uninstalling LBP, but I would definately hold back on that for a while as I don't think it's the issue.

No, all my friends are Xbox owners. I have my saves backed up, would uninstalling affect that?2009-06-09 10:22:00

uninstalling won't affect your saves, but I'd say back them up again (not over the top of the old ones) before you try anything else - you can never be too careful. But then as Shermzor says, it could well be this is the start of your PS3 dying. Is it still in warranty?2009-06-09 10:29:00

I'm not sure if I still have warranty. How do you uninstall exactly? It's never come up before.2009-06-09 10:33:00

Actually there's 2 things that might cause an issue.

All BRDs aren't the same. They might not be the exact same manifacturing quality. Cheap ones will worn out faster. That would be extreme that your LBP worn out already though.

Also, I know the PS3 is saving some identification data when you insert a DVD/BRD/CD for the first time. This data contains the fact you already played this disk once and also other info like the icons (BRD) and a file that make so PS3 remember where you left off watching a DVD. Anyways, maybe that your file for LBP is corrupted somehow. And extreme solution to try would be to back up your stuff and return your PS3 to factory default.

PS: Warranty lasts for up to a year after purchase of your ps3 (ex: 60 gig=no more warranty)...

You can still send it in to sony, but it'll cost $150 (I just did that...for the example reason above!)
