Boss Battle: Cepharobot

Archive: 5 posts

EDIT: Okay, so I thought I'd have more replies by this time, but I guess that's just how it goes. I am going away for the summer, and therefore lose my PS3 for two months. Obviously, I can't do any F4Fs because of this, so I am sorry. I don't know how to take the "F4F" off of the thread title, so I am posting this notice all over this thread. Sorry, and thank you. If you still want to leave feedback, I will have access to a computer, so I can still receive it, and please, do play my level. I just won't be able to play yours.

This is just a short little level I made that, as the title states, is a boss battle. I was originally planning to make a whole bunch of them, but when I am getting comments like "cute, beautiful, and hectic" and receiving poor ratings with no feedback, I don't really know what I'm doing wrong. Yeah, it's from a while ago, but I decided to start playing LBP again, maybe the creative juices will flow more readily this time.

Unfortunately, I do not have (or know of) any means of which to take screenshots, so I cannot offer them. This level has you face off against a giant squid creature (which was inspired by King Calamari from Mario RPG). Again, the level is short and sweet, so it won't take time to play, and I am willing to do feedback for feedback. Be as harsh as you like, as that's the only way I can grow. Thank you.

I enjoy bosses and have made quite a few of them myself. I'll be happy to check out your creation next time I'm on.

Two things:

1) Do you know about little big planet central boss rush? The submission deadline for boss rush 3 is fast approaching!

2) It's hard to please everyone with a boss. Everyone has different levels of difficulty they are willing to attempt. That said, there is a difference between challenging and frustrating. Often times its not hundreds of hours of work. It can just be one or two incredibly minor tweaks (literally changing the timing of a couple components) to see the rating turn around completely.

I'll look forward to playing the level! I'll also post a couple screen shots for you when I do. In the future, if you want to post them yourself, use the in-game photo option. When you click square on the photo in your stickers menu you have several options. One is export to harddrive. Choose this and it will appear in your photos menu in the XMB. You can then use the ps3 internet browser to come here and upload it into an album. Alternatively, you can use a usb stick to transfer it to your computer and upload it from there.

There's a myth that wobble bolts are impossible to work with. I say that this boss forever busts that myth wide open. The wobble bolt work is incredible. Well done. I have a couple pics below, but I recommend people go see the boss for themselves.

As the level description says the creator decided that simple is best. The boss is excellent in its simplicity. However, it's also deceptive. I kept looking at it, saying "this is easy, I can ace this" and it kept getting me because the movements are very unpredictable.

I ended up going above the boss and then coming down through the holes in the tendrils closer to the head, rather than trying to move through the front electrified portions. This approach seemed easier but by no means granted automatic success.

My first play through I was a little confused once I hit all the tendril brains. I then realized there were another three on the head which weren't immediately apparent. I don't know if there's a good way to fix this as the camera really needs to be where it already is so sackboy can avoid the tendrils. I found it without much trouble but it's something you might want to keep an eye on for feedback.

Okay, so obviously I enjoyed the boss. Let's look at the rest of the level.

The race to get extra points if you already beat the level is a good idea. It is probably hidden a little too well though. You might want to just put it on the main path. I attempted to cheat the race by beating the boss first and then activating the race gate. This didn't work because parts of the level appeared to break after I beat the boss. The start gate fell down by itself, without needing the sticker to activate it. However, the finish gate didn't appear so my cheat didn't work. A big red button appeared at the end when this happened as well. I stepped on it but nothing happened. I'm guessing that the boss is attached to a piece of the level that is breaking the stage when it's brains are hit. This is definitely something that needs to be fixed.

I'd also recommend taking a little bit of time to improve the rest of the level visuals and maybe give the boss's head some more definition. You'll find that a little bit of time spent on beautification can pay off big time in the level's general appeal. You might also want to try turning the wobble bolts invisible now that it's an option.

Also, I'm not a fan of on/off proximity switches for lifts. There are better ways to have the jetpack come down than using an on/off proximity switch. Just use a permanent switch to have the thing come down when sackboy approaches.

I gave the boss 4 stars and tagged it fun, boss and timing. With some beautification I would give it a 5 star. As I said at the beginning the wobble work is absolutely incredible. Without that I may have given it 3 stars but I was really impressed and it was an easy decision to give it 4 stars. Even though the boss appears simple there was a lot of work that went into getting those tendrils just right. Many people won't notice that effort and won't give you points for it which could be part of what is going on.

I'm going to guess that the low ratings are coming from people who are taking off points for the looks/presentation/whatever you want to call it. Improve that, republish a version two in a new spot to clear the earlier low scores and you should see a higher average rating.

EDIT: Oh, one more thing. You should add some point bubbles at the beginning that are easy to get. This way you can check out the scoreboard and figure out how many lives people are taking to beat the boss. The race will let you know how many people are playing it more than once.

A fun and difficult boss. Difficult, because (like dcf said) his movements are really unpredictable. The upper arm seemed stuck in the arm below, and opened just for a short second. I tried to sneak in there many times, until I saw the small opening between the parts of the arm which made it much easier.

But yeah, nice work on the wobble bolts!

I gave it 4* and a fun-tag.
