Back Up your LBP Data. Here's why and how.

Archive: 43 posts

The PS3 is a complex piece of computer hardware, running complex software. As a result of this the system as a whole is very complex. They are renowned for system crashes (both temporary and permanent) and Little Big Planet is especially complex and sadly it's quite buggy when it comes to saved games.

Basically BACK UP, BACK UP, BACK UP, just incase If you start to think you are backing up too much and being overly cautious, this means you are doing it right!!

Why you Should Back Up your LBP Data:

"Save Level" does not actually save your level to the hard disk. It saves it to RAM. This means that there is no permanent record of your level - if the system crashes at this point you will lose your work.
.
The actual level save to hard disk appears to be done as a save of your entire profile, when you return to your pod.
.
If you switch off the console whilst the little dude is running on screen, or the orange light is flashing, you will likely lose your data.
.
LBP levels and all other aspects of your saved game are highly susceptible to corruption. This means that even once you have saved your level properly by returning to your pod, you may still lose data, in between play sessions.
.
If your profile is too large, sometimes this can lead to you not being able to save until you reduce the amount of stuff you are hoarding. This should worry you ? keep your profile away from the limit if you possibly can.
.
It is not just levels that can become corrupted, objects, custom stickers, costumes, your progress in story mode (and therefore unlocked stuff) can also be lost.
.
Apparently levels that used to be stable, that you haven't visited for a while can also become corrupted, even though you haven't touched them.

Furthermore, we all know how clumsy and forgetful and prone to mistakes us users are - you must've accidentally dissolved a bit of dissolve you didn't mean to? Or accidentally broken something in create mode off screen and saved with it broken, only to come back next day to despair at the mess that was your beautiful creation. So there are many reasons for backing up your data

How you can Back Up your LBP Data:

In create mode, save regularly. And by this I mean save level and return to your pod, every half hour or so.
.
When you return to your pod, wait for the orange HDD light to finish flashing before you do anything ? you can use the running sackboy on the screen as an indicator, but the LED is probably linked to the hardware so IMO it's more trustworthy.
.
Publish your Work in Progress levels in a locked format. Keeping back ups of data in multiple locations means you are far less likely to lose it. Also, levels on the PSN servers appear to be more stable than local versions. Do this after every create session.
.
New tip from RangerZero - As well as uploading stuff locked. You can also upload it locked, then download it to your moon using another account. Just remember to back up that save as well
.
If you have objects that that you use occasionally (rather than all the time) put them in a locked level and upload it. Delete the objects from your popit and optionally delete the level from your moon. This will give you a backup of your objects and will also reduce the size of you profile.
.
Back up your saved data onto a USB drive often. I?m currently doing this every day. If you don't have one, go out and buy one, they cost almost nothing now and a 1GB drive is waaaay more than you need for all of your saved games on your PS3. A lot of companies give them out like biros as branded marketing items as well so you may be able to get yourself a free one To back up to USB, plug the drive in go to PS3 System Software - > Game -> Saved Data Utility -> Little Big Planet. Press X. Press triangle. Select copy -> USB Device (Flash Disk). Do this for all your other games while you are at it.
.
When using the backup utility a second time, it will automatically save over your previous version, which you might think is OK as the newer version is better. Bad assumption, a level you didn't look at in the meantime may have have become corrupted (see 7 in the first list). To be safer, keep multiple backups. You can rename the folder on the USB stick or copy the version to you PC. I currently have about a month's worth of daily backups on my PC.

Disclaimer
This will not prevent profile corruption from happening, nothing can. But, if you follow these general guidelines, you will greatly limit the amount of loss, damage, tears, grief and (potentially) bloodshed that will occur if and when you suffer data loss in LBP. When you lose an hour's work, you will be annoyed, but the knowledge that your backup policy saved you from losing an entire level should cheer you right back up again. Well, nearly

Feel free to post useful additions / corrections and I will get them merged into this OP. As much info as possible will be greatly appreciated.

It's just occured to me that it may become necessary to recover data from multiple sources. I could probably put together a guide for that too, but I would be guessing, I don't really have time and if someone else has actually done it it would be great to hear their ideas.

Yeah I started backing my stuff up a while back, when I saw everyone start loosing their stuff
I've not done it for a while now and this has made me remember to do so

I got a bit scared last night actually when I had an idea for a level and thought I'd try out the concept.
It involved a piece of circle sponge with a hole cut out and in that hole another piece of sponge would be emitted. The piece of sponge that was emitted also had an emitter on it that emitted a circle of rubber with a little piece of dark matter inside it to keep it in the air. That rubber piece was emitted at 0.1 and max 95 at once.
The original emitter was set to emit every 5 seconds so that I could end up with an unlimited number of the emitted rubber pieces.
The idea was for sackboy to have a jetpack and pick up the circle of sponge and as he flew along he would create an original rubber track that would allow a car to travel across (*cough* *cough* I wasn't making my own ModNation Racers LBP level )

/ramble

The point is that it worked really well but crashed the hell out of my PS3 and I had to do a hard reset:eek:
But I was very lucky and I only lost the level I was working on :hero:

So Yeah basically BACK UP, BACK UP, BACK UP, just encase

I had a plan for tricking the thermo into believing I was emitting 1 object at a time, when actually I was emitting infinate at once. With infinate lifespan. Was similar to what you did. I expected it to crash though, so I backed up first lol. It worked pretty nicely as well but you can't go %@!?ing with the thermo like that bucko - you will bring down the wrath of the littleBigGods. True story.

But yeah
BACK UP, BACK UP, BACK UP, just encase EXACTLY, if you think you are backing up too much, then you've probably got it about right

Your thread is starting great.

I would add just another detail. When you're back upping your data on a flash drive, you shouldn't overwrite your last good version.

I always keep a "last good save" somewhere. Most of the time, on my PC. It's easy to have 2 sub folders like on called "new" and the other called "old" or something and you always transfer your last good save in "old".

Proactive as opposed to so many reactive rants i've read... Fact of the matter is; I don't save enough. Just recently designed an elaborate door, (after a design I deconstructed and rebuilt from scratch based in no way on Burnvictim42's wonderful Door Level). Point being, I must have been tired and saved after I triggered it... there was no back peddling I had to recreate the pre-triggered conditions... since the door has alot of dissolve material to it... this was less than ideal... So it's not just system errors... there are plenty of good reasons to back-up including human error.2009-06-08 21:56:00

@ ranger: I sort of said that but I'll go back and change it so it is clearer. Thanks for the feedback.

@ gravel: One of those reactive rants you read was probably me, but that one was ok because I used tags (yup that makes it ok ) I was also making a legitimate suggestion / complaint about system design at the same time (but I fully appreciate that I messed up). I had basically finished my wheeley good switches, and whilst they are stable, the tuning of a couple of them takes frickin ages (connector / mag switch properties have to be just right and it can only be done by trial and error).

I have almost completely removed dissolve from all my logic system designs (even permanent switches). I just won't use it unless I need it, I'm too clumsy and absent-minded. I'll add a piece about human error as well.

I'm a bit confused as far as backups are concerned. I can't fit all my levels on my moon and I'm assuming they're the only ones that get saved? As in, if all my levels were to get moderated, I'd only be able to republish those saved on my moon? Do I just create several backups, each containing different levels?

Sorry for all the questions, this really makes my head hurt. I wish they'd just give us an export to HDD option for levels and have done with it.

Kiminski, I know nothing of Moderated levels so I can't really comment. Only stuff from your moon gets copied to USB when you back up so I assume you are correct.

If you keep backup levels online you can keep them locked, so the likelyhood of moderation is reduced. Also, this tip from RangerZero:

Store your levels in another PSN account? That's what I will do when I will not be able to make space anymore.

(lock your levels, make them copyable. log into the other account, download them to your moon)

Cheers.

I do have locked back ups online, but I'm almost at my 20 level limit. Ended up making several backups, each one with different levels on my moon and chucking them on my PC.

I had considered sending them all to my boyfriends PSN, but didn't know if keys could unlock my backup copies? I'm guessing not, since they're on a different slot on the server, but didn't want to risk it.

I also noticed, if you try and copy your save game data without plugging in a USB drive, it offers you the option to save it to an alt PSN. Has anyone tried this and managed to recover it to their original account without losing the ability to get trophies?

First off... wonderful thread by the way. :hero: Thanks so much for creating this!

I was thinking a key was related to the name of the level, not the slot!?! Hopefully someone can clear that up!

If that were the case adding -backup or something similar to the title to insure you had a separate key, but that might open another can of worms considering your number of levels. ...you could take a break and let us attempt to catch up ya know! Ahh just kidding, I love your stuff too much to draw that many booo's from your other fans.

I have done the backup to the alternate account and thought that was the entire profile including trophies, costumes, as well as levels on your moon. Though having it all on one machine is still pretty risky and it would be restored to that point in time you pulled the backup. I have thankfully not needed to restore.

..again, I am hoping to have someone else clear that up as I don't want to assume anything on this topic!!!

As for backing up, I might just pop them on another account anyway then, would certainly be less of a pain to restore. I can always fall back on the others if it all goes pear shaped.

Yes, if you copy your LBP save to another account it's everything, same moon, costumes, everything.

For some reason, in my Saved Data folder there's a savefile called Unknown Format that confused me, but along with the fact my save file for LBP isn't listed was scarey,

So I booted up LBP and on the loading screen it said Save File missing, but there was the option to retry, so I did. and it worked!

But now everytime I start LBP it gives me the Save File missing and everytime it works, although this doesn't sound like something to be concerned over, I have no way of backing up my LBP save

Any ideas or tips?
Cheers

The actual level save to hard disk appears to be done as a save of your entire profile, when you return to your pod.

Woah... Thats just plain careless of Mm... seriously never realized that was the case.

Nice of you to write this up rtm! Its a potential life-saver to a lot of the new-comers

Sorry to hear that.

Your published levels will still be there though, they're saved on the server, no need for HDD.

Now I'm really confused... After some major corruption issues, I was told - by the Australian PSN helpline - that you CAN'T back up and then upload from a USB with LBP because of copyright issues specific to LBP. I did try it initially on someone from AusPSN's original advice, which also included that I DELETE my entire game data, but it didn't work. It wouldn't let me upload saved data to the HDD. I need to back up as my profile keeps hitting 'full'... might just have to try the USB again... Any idea what might have gone wrong so i can avoid it in future??2009-08-26 01:51:00

This thread is what made me build my Vault.

https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=p=274379#post274379

Copyable for all of you to use. You can use it to store items of course, but I personally use mine to store my keys to my locked, copyable levels. That way if I ever lose my PS3 or my PSN I'll simply be able to redownload my levels after obtaining the keys from my Vault. XD

Please try it out. I spent a lot of time on it simply making it cool.

I don't believe anyone answered this user's question. It also happens to relate to some questions I have.

1. Is there a way to back up LBP game data onto some sort of portable storage device like a USB and upload from said device?

2. Is there some way to back up download content I've bought?

3. How often does data corruption occur? Is it a rare occurrence or a very common one?

Thank you for your time.

Hey, I think I know the answers to these questions hopefully someone will see this and correct me if I'm wrong!

First, is it possible to backup LBP data onto a portable device and put it back onto a PS3? I assume you mean a different PS3... Should be fine as far as I know. I think some games are locked and you can't move them to another PS3, one of my games won't even let me use the backup utility on it though.

Second, is it possible to backup DLC? DLC should be saved as part of your PSN profile so you can just redownload it onto 5 (?) PS3s

Third, how often does data corrupt? Is it very common? Yeah, between dodgey saving, human error, actual corruption and PS3 system crashes, it's quite common to lose at least a little bit of your stuff. Think is with LBP "a little bit of stuff" could well be a few hours of creative effort.

I have no idea about babydoll's situation though - anyone want to help?

Thank you for advising me. This will help. The question about putting on a PS3 was assuming it was the same PS3 because BabyDoll1970 had a problem with that.

Thanks, again!

Wouldn't it be possible for someone to just, upload their save file for others to download so that people can get other people's costumes and stickers?!?

Well it might be a good thing, but I think it would just be hard...

Well I sucessfully used this in the opposite way to save my level once.

I accidently deleted by, upon doing so I freaked out, pressed circle several times so I was back in my pod, then I unplugged my PS3 is a matter of milliseconds. When i turned my PS3 back my level was back . I was nervous over that one.

Backing up is a great idea! However, after I restored a backup LBP tells me that I am using someone else's profile and can no longer get trophies etc. OMG I have the same user information with Sony etc. have not changed anything. Does anyone know a solution to this issue? I really hate to start all over to finish getting 5 more trophies.2009-11-23 19:01:00

How this you proceed to do that? It's not supposed to happen.
The way to backup your save file so this doesn't is the following:

-plug external device
-go in "saved game data"
-press triangle on LBP profile data file
-copy on external device

Also, when you put the file back in the PS3, overwrite your corrupted file if ever you didn't delete it. It's possible so IDs are changed if you try to put a second save game on the HDD therefore causing the trophies block.

Oh yeah you can't do nothing about the trophy block. This happens when the saved game isn't recognised as "created and last saved on this machine".

yeah it's a good idea i am gonna back up my data very reguarly because of what happend to me that scared the living hell out of me. Basically i was in the middle of playing my ps3 when i realized (don't ask me why) that i needed to move my PS3 (Yes while it was on very stupid of me yes) And the power cable came out from the back of the PS3 turning it off loosing everything i had done. when i turned it back on it said somthing about all my data being corrupt. I might have slightly miss read it though since everything was fine. But knowing that i could have lost my data almost made me cry.

also a good idea is to sync your trophies with the server every time you get a trophy this will stop you loosing your trophy data.

thanks for listening to my story.

Did you try the new way of backing up? From the top of my head, hit start -> profile settings -> backup profile for your game progress. Not sure about this but I believe this doesn't include the levels on your moon, you need to backup them separately. Select them on your moon, hit square, move a few pages to the right and there should be a backup option. Another possibility is to publish the levels locked, then you can always copy them back later.

After you backup the stuff from inside the game, the backup files will be sitting in your LBP game data IIRC. You'll need to copy them to a USB stick from there.

I got a new hard drive now (320gb!) and have more stuff than ever before now woohoo! it corrupted when I tried to delete my corrupted PShome when it froze and that fatal message came up so now I backup my data daily when I finish on LBP with a new USB so this is brilliant advice take it in now and thank yourself later k?2010-09-16 21:16:00

When I used the XMB's backup option (I was replacing a PS3 HD at the time), the profiles of all users on the PS3 were backed up, although they were older than my LBP profile backups. So I exported them, then backed them up onto the external HD I used for the PS3 backup. When I finished restoring the data, I re-imported the files back into LBP and LBP2.

Although using an external HD is overkill, and using a USB stick would be easier.

As for restoring to a differnt profile, I haven't tryed that. Maybe I should voluenteer and experiment with it some.

Oh yeah, and one more thing, if you're really paranoid about losing your USB stick, make another backup onto another stick, and put that somewhere where only you know.
