It finally happened

Well, my spotless streak is over. Yesterday I got an "Error Loading Level" on one of the levels on My Moon. Anything I tried to do with it (Edit, Play, Copy, Publish, etc) would just give me an error. There was no way to save it, so I had no choice but to delete it. Thankfully, the level in question was my second experimentation level I mess around with to test out new concepts before applying them to a real level, and that was the one without the mechs I'm currently tweaking inside the first experimentation level. There's a lesson here for everyone : ALWAYS keep a duplicate of your important levels somewhere other than "My Moon", whether it be as a Locked Published level or as a backup. R.I.P. "Area 51", you shall be missed (even though you've already been replaced by "Area 52" ). | 2009-06-08 11:20:00 Author: Gilgamesh Posts: 2536 |
That sucks, man, sorry to hear that. I've had my fair share of that problem, but thankfully nothing was ever too great a loss. Thank God you didn't lose the mechs. I did notice one odd thing with it though. I cleared out my moon a bit before I took a month or so break from LBP, and left only a few projects I intended on coming back to. So I hadn't even touched LBP in weeks, and when I came back, I tried loading up some of those old files and they all gave me the failed message. A bunch of captured objects, the oldest one's I had, and a couple stickers that were associated with the files, were also corrupted with the red-star icon on them. I couldn't understand why any of them would have changed since I hadn't even opened them in a month, or even turned on LBP. It was like the files had some sort of expiration date on them. | 2009-06-08 12:24:00 Author: Unknown User |
Same here, I hadn't touched the level in weeks before then. I've been mostly working on Boss Rush and SackMech so I really didn't have much time for experimenting anything else. When I wanted to try out a new concept, I went to load up the level and poof, instantly "Error Loading Level". I knew it was as good as gone when I saw that, but I tried some tricks to get it to load anyway, no luck. But items can be lost too? I guess I better start keeping a copy of my experimentation level in Published-Locked also. I figured my objects were safe as long as I kept them in my Popit, but I suppose that's not something I should rely on. | 2009-06-08 13:35:00 Author: Gilgamesh Posts: 2536 |
I think it's best to just not rely on data integrity on you PS3 whatsoever. Development work I'm publishing locked and I'm backing up my LBP save every day I spend a significant amount of time creating (i.e every day ) and just keeping all of the saved files on my PC - I don't even trust the data backup tool to work properly, lol. | 2009-06-08 13:54:00 Author: rtm223 Posts: 6497 |
I'm duplicating my levels and my save since last October! Still, this advice is never said enough. It's good you posted about this. BACK UP YOUR STUFF people. . | 2009-06-08 15:44:00 Author: RangerZero Posts: 3901 |
Well, I figured I had to post about it. We've had a lot of patches and few reports like this recently, so people (myself included) might start thinking that the problem was fixed and drop their guard. I started keeping a locked copy of my unfinished levels during the explosion of save file problems back in December. For some reason though, I never had any problems like this myself... until now. It's better to be safe than sorry. | 2009-06-08 16:13:00 Author: Gilgamesh Posts: 2536 |
One of my levels dies too, a secret one that only me & xkappax actually know about (z0mg). I managed to copy it to another slot, but loads of stuff didn't make it. | 2009-06-08 16:23:00 Author: ARD Posts: 4291 |
Still, this advice is never said enough. It's good you posted about this. I was thinking this earlier - I'm really suprised there isn't a sticky thread somewhere, in help or something, that informs people of the importance to back up data, and how to do so. I'm thinking back to a thread a couple of weeks ago where someone lost everything and complained that they weren't even aware that you could lose data on a console... To many of us it's obvious, but to some it could make a massive difference. Any mods fancy making a sticky on this? | 2009-06-08 16:37:00 Author: rtm223 Posts: 6497 |

To many of us it's obvious, but to some it could make a massive difference. Any mods fancy making a sticky on this? I think that someone that knows what's up should simply make a new thread, with clear info and precautions and then that one could get stickied. When I game is buggy like LBP, i'm always (partly tks to my QA experience), limiting the possible factors that can create a bug and always backing up everything. I never got a profile corrupted so far but I also am extremely careful. I go as far as doing nothing while the game is writing on the HDD just to be sure nothing *****s up. (you know, like when you leave a level you're creating right after saving, the writes stuff as you come out. I leave the little sackboy logo disappear because I back out of my moon). Anyhow, I really think you're idea of a warning thread is good. . | 2009-06-08 17:33:00 Author: RangerZero Posts: 3901 |
Sorry to hear - I've been there and done that before. CS2 is a total rebuild from version1 from a failed to load corruption. I invested in a flash drive and haven't looked back. Best thing I ever did in LBP. | 2009-06-08 18:33:00 Author: Morgana25 Posts: 5983 |
Anyhow, I really think you're idea of a warning thread is good. I just looked through the tutorials and saw nothing so I'm writing one now. Will be a bit rough and ready, but I'll update it with any useful input people post. Edit, done it here (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=p=218187#post218187). Anyone who wants to add to / correct any of this info, whack a reply on it. | 2009-06-08 18:46:00 Author: rtm223 Posts: 6497 |
