The Things that go Splat in the Night
Archive: 50 posts
In the dead of night, you wake to hear... Mourning? Moaning? A sick cow, maybe? At any rate, you'll never get back to sleep with this racket going on! Time to INVESTIGATE! http://i116.photobucket.com/albums/o16/LoiusAllieran/LBP/Splat%20in%20the%20Night/APhoto_2.jpg Why it's only the friendly neighborhood Bogeyman, whining about how those mean old plants stole all his bugs. Aw. Seems he won't quiet down until he gets them back. Time to ADVENTURE! http://i116.photobucket.com/albums/o16/LoiusAllieran/LBP/Splat%20in%20the%20Night/APhoto_3.jpg Things that go Splat in the Night was inspired by the Monster Pack's Goo Splat. It's your regular everyday platformer, in utter darkness, with spooky green eyes and green goo all over. Run through a jungle and a cave to find the Daddy Plant, then blow it up by feeding it explosive pill bugs to get Bogeyman's bugs back http://i116.photobucket.com/albums/o16/LoiusAllieran/LBP/Splat%20in%20the%20Night/APhoto_1.jpg Point bubbles abound in this place; combos of up to 21x are not unheard of for those who are light on their feet There are also plenty of prize bubbles for those who are willing to stray from the beaten path. Don't forget your glowy eyes! | 2009-06-07 18:35:00 Author: Loius Posts: 342 |
Well Louis, you truely are a varied, yet genius, creator! Yet another level type I thought I'd seen before (the silhouettes are surely all the same, no?) now revamped and made completely different. The colour scheme and quirky story were brilliant - enough said! Pros: + The art style + Those goo splats everywhere worked a treat + Lots of hidden things + Combo's to be had everywhere! + Simple platforming + Everything is explained well + Quirky, but fun, story Cons: - The plant section near the end with the bugs running towards you getting eaten was difficult to say the least. Cost me a couple of restarts Overall though I'm very sad this currently has 3 stars and it's at least a four star level - I rated it 5 though and hearted F4F on my Halloween Town level Please | 2009-06-07 19:29:00 Author: Coxy224 Posts: 2645 |
Yeah, the bugs-running-toward you area... Urgh... >..< I had an infinite-life checkpoint there for a few days until I finally got the hang of it xD I might change it back to that. The trick is that you can't jump, and you have to wait until there's no bugs in the way... but it's awkward to say that in game ("Oh btw don't jump! And wait 'til it's clear!" sounds nasty)... It's crazy tricky, but I love the look of it... maybe I can slow the plants down a bit. | 2009-06-07 23:41:00 Author: Loius Posts: 342 |
OMG Everyone on LBPC go and play this level. NOW Let me say 5*, hearted and creator hearted right now. Edit - actually I forgot your creator heart when I uploaded the photo, will do it later. I love it. IIt looks great in plays great, it's tricky with a fun vibe. Love the enemies exploding into splats - nice touch. Even better when the splat boulder explodes - I've never been so please to be killed as when I spotted that, I nearly got through in one life and would never have seen it. I like he placement of points for the nimble-footed, something I'm trying to work with atm. I also like secrets, especially a mini boss in a secret room. The main boss has one of the nicest boss mechanics I've seen in LBP. And my sackboy looks AWESOME jumping in silhouette (I tried to take photos but they weren't all that). I could sing your praises all night long, but I wouldn't be me if I didn't find one or two niggles to pick up on I should point out that I have had to be very nit-picky to come up with these though: After the boss, it took me a while to realise I could drop down through the gas, would be nice if this was more obvious. In the picture below, if you run to the corner, the camera goes funky, probably just needs the area tweaked a bit. http://i600.photobucket.com/albums/tt82/rtm223/APhoto_6.jpg The chains dangling lures from the plants (as in the picture above, nice play mechanic BTW) look and sound wrong to me. Have you considered making the chain invisible and attaching visible string? May or may not look better. Some of the time it was difficult to tell if the direction was on or off the beaten track. I don't feel so good finding secrets if I got there because I was lost The part when you drop down and get attacked from both sides. I died there (fair do's I was too slow). When I dropped again I actually fell on top of one of the critters and couldn't avoid dying. When I dropped again, one of them had noshed the other and flipped him over. Might want some refinement there Awesome level. P.S. As for the bugs running towards you, I didnt' really have a problem there. Just shoved them out of my way. Think I lost 2 lives. Only problem was that one got stuck in the hole and I had to wait for him to demit. | 2009-06-08 00:36:00 Author: rtm223 Posts: 6497 |
Certainly looks good. Haven`t finish it though so I`ll be missing stuff. - Looks great. A really good art style. - The splats are cool. - Once or twice I was sure if I was to head left or right. - Didn`t get past the part you were talking about earlier. | 2009-06-08 01:00:00 Author: Matt 82 Posts: 1096 |
I made the plants... 33% slower, should be a lot less hectic now. I'll add some arrows in the split-path areas, especially that one you photo'd - definitely looks like an either-way-is-fine area. I haven't tried invisible winches, thanks! I shall. The two critters you drop down on, I shall mess with them and see what I can fix. I hadn't even thought about what happened if they collide xD As for dropping through the boss gas - Originally, you were stuck on the 'vine' that's rippling along the ground, and as it dissolved away, there was nothing you could do but fall - then I moved the switch down to the vine level, and now you don't auto-fall. I'll see how I can make that nicer; shouldn't be too hard. | 2009-06-08 01:21:00 Author: Loius Posts: 342 |
I really adored this level. It played great, looked great and was quirky. BUT THERE'S A PROBLEM!! The cool silhouette style that these pictures show, that wasn't present when I played! I could see all the switches, dark matter and cardboard! I think that's the only problem but I really liked it other than that! 4 Stars/ Cute/ Hearted! Oh and can you do F4F please? I'd like you to give feedback on my level Siren: The Lost World [Episode 2-Otherside]. The information is below in my signature. I hope you enjoy! thanks! | 2009-06-08 01:33:00 Author: Noroibito Posts: 211 |

Hush nobody saw that xD I accidentally published it for a few minutes with the darkness off. Go me. xD I had to adjust some motor bolts, then I saved, then I realized it wasn't dark, so I changed the settings, quit the level, and published - I think the change to global lighting doesn't trigger the 'Would you like to save?' prompt. Or I'm blind. xD Anyway, try it again, the darkness is back, it's much better when it doesn't look like an H4H level. And yes, actually, your Siren series was already on my to-play list, so I'll be feeding back at you (and all the others in the thread) soonishly. Other changes I've made since my last post: Winches changed out to strings, much better sound now (i.e. none ) I might experiment with adding a sound while you're grabbing. When you're supposed to go down after the boss, there's now a camera to show that there's something down there to land on. More arrows added in to point out the 'correct' way. | 2009-06-08 08:10:00 Author: Loius Posts: 342 |
Winches changed out to strings, much better sound now (i.e. none ) I might experiment with adding a sound while you're grabbing. Is there some kind of "om-nom-nom-nom-nom" comedy eating sound, cause that would be ace | 2009-06-08 08:58:00 Author: rtm223 Posts: 6497 |
I played your level last night and enjoyed it. +choice of color scheme complimented each other very well. +Loved the splat effect produced by creatures +the effect of point bubble in front of checkpoints +eerie feeling -camera angle between the pink gas (swings) and the blue gas (platforms) was difficult to see especially with the scoreboard circle popping up. ( I know you can't control that coming up) -at first I wasn't quite sure what to do with the big plant. I did have trouble with the snapping claws right before the big plant.( the one in the middle). Not a game fault but mine. Finally did get it. Overall I found this to be visually appealing, challenging and fun. | 2009-06-08 16:59:00 Author: Lady_Luck__777 Posts: 3458 |

I just played your level and I thought it was great! I especially loved when you jump on the little critters and the splats come flying out haha! The whole ambiance was very cool! | 2009-06-08 23:55:00 Author: GrahamLif3 Posts: 386 |
Really nice level! great platforming, and lots of bubbles to string some great combos. I Like the art style, and the splat thing is a nice touch. Great fun to play. cool mini boss too. I recommend this level to everyone. | 2009-06-09 00:11:00 Author: smasher Posts: 641 |
I liked the piranha plants that gobbled you up if you held the sponges too long. very nice. I'd love your feedback on my own "dark" level (info in sig). Nice work! | 2009-06-09 00:19:00 Author: ZipCity Posts: 208 |
Very nice level with a weird but fun story. I liked how you had points in a way that you can get them in big combos. I had fun trying to get the high score. Did you do that for a future competition or something? Anyway, I really liked how when you killed the enemies some green thing came out, that was cool. Also, the boss was super awesome. I gave it 4 stars. | 2009-06-09 00:33:00 Author: brnxblze Posts: 1318 |
Thanks for all the feedbacks, yo; glad y'all are liking it. The absurdly large number of point bubbles is because I often forget to put them in at all. Plus I like having a reward for just plain old good platforming skilllllz. A race is fine but it just doesn't have the same flair as the pop-pop-pop-FWIIIING of a 21x combo. <3 Lol, just noticed one of the tags for this thread is 'things.' That's brilliant right there. | 2009-06-09 08:41:00 Author: Loius Posts: 342 |
WOW what an amazing level, I loved everything about. The boss battle was inspired, Brilliant, no idea how you did it but brilliant. The splats were also very very cool. I did spot one of you plants though that only had half a mouth. the main room where the "pully-up plants" (no I can't think of a better way to describe them) are on the ledge on the left, I think. he kept smacking me into a wall rather than eating me. 5* | 2009-06-09 11:24:00 Author: groble Posts: 223 |
Huhm, I'll check that out. The plants that're made of metal often blast their own mouths off if they hit anything; it might have just got out of sync... with.... the wall.... | 2009-06-09 17:28:00 Author: Loius Posts: 342 |
Are you implementing them with 1-shot flippers (i can't remember from my play through)? If so this may be the issue you are facing. A directional input with a 0.1s timing is far less likely to break | 2009-06-09 17:35:00 Author: rtm223 Posts: 6497 |
No, I know all about flippers breaking. Angry eyes. xD Stupid flippers. They're arranged to never hit anything, I thought, though it's possible that one's scraping the wall and only randomly breaks its mouth off. I still has to go check. Edit: Fixed, fair likely. Level republished along with some more fiddly changes. Will elaborate in next post. | 2009-06-09 17:37:00 Author: Loius Posts: 342 |
Biggish update - highest possible score is approximately doubled I've been able to collect every score bubble, so it's technically possible to achieve a perfect score. Just rather difficult. Some tweaking to the boss; it should now be impossible to break away enough of the platform that you can't get a new bomb. Added LBPC logo at level end. Forgot I had that. A few new prizes added (Bogeyman's head, the screaming, exploding prize bubble, maybe another? I forget); all the prizes will count as new ones so if you have the old prizes you're going to get duplicates. I think. If you're trying for the high score (wink wink nudge nudge) and don't want prizes, don't forget you can turn off prize collection and still get the points without the prize. Tweaked some cameras to be nicer. Made it very obvious that after the boss, you go down. There's a bunch of points down there! Go get them! | 2009-06-10 04:31:00 Author: Loius Posts: 342 |
I left you a comment on your level saying that I will leave you feedback. Well here it is!: Pros: - awesome Boggy man - secret bubbles in house - the splat that comes out of enemies when you kill 'em. Such a good feeling - the platforming. I'm a huge platforming fan so this is a big + - the caves were my favorite part - the way you set up the bubbles. I restarted the level a few times so that I could get 1#..... well I didn't become 1# - the exploding balls of terror! Those with the purple gas - genius and fun boss. Not to hard & not easy. Perfect.... - full Boggy man! Cons: - the last plant that pulls you up (the ones that crush you when your to close to 'em) can throw the sponge "you grab to get up" to the prize bubble so it doesn't fall down. I had to restart because of that. If it's not the prize bubble it is something that hangs it & doesn't return it (the Boggy man?!?!) :kz: I had a real blast playing this. I hope you make part 2! Brilliant, 5 stars & heart | 2009-06-10 17:22:00 Author: blizzard_cool Posts: 752 |
That's weird; the lure isn't even on the right layer to interact with bubbles ;_; I'll see what I can fix. Thanks | 2009-06-10 17:50:00 Author: Loius Posts: 342 |
no problem. Glad I could help | 2009-06-10 17:57:00 Author: blizzard_cool Posts: 752 |
I love this level. I couldn't kill the boss because one of the bomb bugs got stuck when the far right platform broke away, and there was a cavity opened there and my little bomb fella fell in there. I still love this level, it's simply fun and entertaining with the splats. Well done! | 2009-06-10 18:36:00 Author: Recurracy Posts: 166 |
I loved this level. The venus flytrap-like sponge plants especially were good fun. The whole colour palette is great too, it looks like a cartoon, brilliant! : ) | 2009-06-10 18:48:00 Author: julesyjules Posts: 1156 |

Oy, they're not supposed to get stuck, I made them circles for a reason Back to the making-tiny-adjustments board. Edit: Update, reduced the radius of the thingy that detects the bug. If it even falls between two standing platforms, now, it should still be possible to make a new one. | 2009-06-10 23:42:00 Author: Loius Posts: 342 |
This is a flat out awesome level using the sillhouette effect to great use (I put it up there with Miglioshin's work in that regard), wonderful use of the monster pack sounds and stickers (the squish and emitting stickers is fantastic... black on green is such a good combination). The point strings are immense... I usually have no room left for points in my levels, but this is always how I want to do them, and love it when a level is set up for endless replayability like this. That's sure to net you a long list of repeat plays once it moves onto page 1 in a day or so. This has tons of great platforming to keep you on your toes as you pull these strings off - the first time through you want to fight the compulsion to chase the points so you can read and look around at the nice shaping of everything, and the falling leaves etc but it's too hard to resist. I did have a problem though, at the bos... I don't know what happened but on the 3rd bomb, he bit down on it, and I died with it, but left on the platform was a set of spikes, and I noticed the left side of the mouth-trap was missing. I kept trying to shove the spikes off into the gas using a bomb, but would get slapped back by the mouth, which wasn't ingesting the bomb like it should have been. I assume Iwas at the end of the level, and I'll replay it here with some friends. Still, I really enjoyed the level, and will have to keep checking your stuff out. Good work. | 2009-06-11 02:38:00 Author: Unknown User |
This was an excellent level, I gave it 5 stars to help boost your rating...very cool. | 2009-06-11 04:36:00 Author: Spider-Jew Posts: 1090 |
Oh dear, no, please no, tell me the mouth didn't break xD The boss plant's mouth is made of sponge. Yeah, sponge. Wanna know why? Long story! Okay. Started with metal. Metal crush stuff good, right? Well it sure does. But it also pulls stiff pistons out of alignment when it moves fast : Since I have the boss being moved left/right by one piston and up/down by another, the plant's head would eventually snap the piston and go flying across the level. As hilarious as it is to randomly have an enormous metal mouth land on you while you're climbing trees, I decided that wasn't the effect I was going for. :| SO I tried cardboard. Turns out cardboard doesn't throw the pistons out of whack, but it doesn't crush the bug either, unless it's dead-center in the mouth - and the bug's material can't be changed, you has to be able to grab it. On a whim, I tried sponge, and amazingly, it worked. Apparently it's lighter than metal and stronger than I thought, so it's worked brilliantly. But if it broke for you, I may have to do some crazy shenanigans to get him back to fixed :/ Any idea at all what broke it? Smashing the bug against a wall, pushing into the ground, anything? I'd say try again. I've never had the sponge mouth break, and I'm hoping you just came across a bad lag spike that caused physics nonsense, or a random generic bad-physics moment. Sorry I have to make stuff so complicated xD That aside, I have added a ton more bubbles and chances for combos; my score of 50-some thousand is now much more achievable. It takes some doing, and you might have to pass up on some bubbles to keep your combo going, but I've got over 55,000 (which incidentally is over 9000) a few times. I'll let you in on a secret on how I got so many points in there. The front thin layer is covered by a bunch of immense invisible dark matter blocks. How to get large blocks of invisible material. (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=t=11827&highlight=thick+invisible+material) Incredibly useful. Before, each bubble had its own dark matter blip keeping it afloat; now there's one piece of dark matter to every 10 or 20 bubbles. I could probably add in three or four times as many bubbles if there was anywhere to put them. xD I'm planning on a contest for this level, highest score wins. Get your platforming skillz ready. I might make one or two more passes to make sure everything works perfect-like, but expect it within a couple days. | 2009-06-11 05:14:00 Author: Loius Posts: 342 |
Maybe instead of physically crushing them, keep them grabbable and use dissolve for their material. Tab them with their invisible mag switch, and key the mouth up to only appear to be crushing them. Then you could probably go back to cardboard for the mouth (if that would even be any more failsafe...). I know how it is though... it never ends does it? | 2009-06-11 05:28:00 Author: Unknown User |
I had no problems with it and I played it through twice. Excellent job on this level. It's unique, it's gross (in a good way), it's got huge replay value, real challenge... what's not to love! 5 stars & hearted! Keep 'em coming! | 2009-06-11 05:35:00 Author: Morgana25 Posts: 5983 |

Then you could probably go back to cardboard for the mouth (if that would even be any more failsafe...). I know how it is though... it never ends does it? I would, but I try to make sure everything I make is as mechanically correct as I can get it. I can't force myself to make something 'look' like it's crushed; if it's supposed to be getting crushed then it's gonna get crushed Thing is, though, if the mouth broke it means it hit something harder than sponge, which is either the floor (metal), or the wall (dark matter), or the spikes at the top of its mouth; but it shouldn't have been possible to hit any of those with the mouth. And anyway, since it's on two stiff pistons, one of those should've bent, because that makes sense. (Sarcasm. It doesn't make sense for stiff pistons to bend when they encounter resistance ) Sigh. It really never does end. | 2009-06-11 05:49:00 Author: Loius Posts: 342 |
Just managed to pip into 2nd. : ) I really really love this level, there's not a single thing I would change. | 2009-06-12 14:22:00 Author: julesyjules Posts: 1156 |
Really good level. I saw it on the 2nd page of the Cool Levels and recognised the name. Really original and fun to play. Great job! | 2009-06-12 14:41:00 Author: Killian Posts: 2575 |
I was in #2 last night but I think Julseyjules may have just bumped me! I did manage to find all the prizes and I think I got all your hidden areas.....hm..... Also - hate to mention it but I managed to lock up one of your plant with the sponge coming out of it's mouth contraptions last night. I was going up multiple times - ya know, bubble collecting, and the sponge appears to have wedged the mouth open. I couldn't get up after that so I ended up restarting. I've played this level at least 10 times and it's the first time it happened so I'm not sure if it's a major problem or more of a statistically unfortunate situation. Just wanted to give you a heads up on it. | 2009-06-12 17:47:00 Author: Morgana25 Posts: 5983 |
But the lure isn't even on the same layer as the mouth ;..; Maybe it landed on top, though; that could cause the same thing. There's a couple where that's possible >..< I'll fix that up sometime. | 2009-06-12 19:47:00 Author: Loius Posts: 342 |
Awesome. 5 stars. I thought the silhouette thing was gonna make it hard to play, but you did a really good job of making sure the player always has a clear view of any nearby enemies. The waterfall part felt like the jumps were just at my limit; I'm not an expert so this felt perfect. I just barely made it through the waterfall without falling. The boss was amazing. My only complaint is that I had to re-spawn the bomb bug many, many times since the holes in the floor were *right* where it wanted to land/roll each and every time. It might be more productive to make the whole just small enough where it can't fall through them, or make the bomb bug a little larger. I dunno, you're the one with the awesome skillz, so I'll stop preaching to you. Overall, loved the level. It was nearly perfect. : ) Also, thanks for the review of my "Clocktower 7" level, I appreciate it. | 2009-06-13 08:50:00 Author: Jakeb89 Posts: 15 |
I played this a couple of times yesterday and LOVED it all the way up to the ending, and at the final boss sections of the floor broke so that I could never seem to spawn the bomb without it falling down the hole. I must have spawned 100 bombs... I just couldn't do it. | 2009-06-13 11:46:00 Author: CCubbage Posts: 4430 |
That's weird, I have the bug rigged to always land somewhere - I removed all the platforms that disappear in create mode and I'd (eventually) get it to land somewhere I suppose I could make it alternate stable/unstable parts, make the bug bigger so it can't fall between them. I'll try that and see if the universe implodes. HEY GUYS that was the very wrongest way to try to fix that xD Poor mr. plant asploded. I had it very calibrated to be unbreakable, seems the slightly-bigger bug is too much for him to eat So anyway, for those who're having problems with the bug -if you're just hanging on the switch, try letting go then grabbing it again. That should change up the pattern of where the bug lands. I assure you, there's a set of three stable platforms that the bug will hit, eventually, and stay on I just went through in create mode to make sure - I removed all the unstable platforms and didn't have any problems, though I had to mix up the pattern a couple times. I'm a big fan of the platforms that fall away being different each time, and I like the number that can't fall away. If there's any specific suggestions, though, I'm all ears *waggles ears* And by the way, thanks for the spotlight! Really wasn't expecting it when I started this level; I thought it was just gonna be 'another platformer level' that I did on my break between CRaZY WRonG MEchAnICS (top-down/ pinball... ugh, brain hurt xD) | 2009-06-13 22:41:00 Author: Loius Posts: 342 |

after the boss i can fall through the level back down to the section where the balls roll down the hill Well don't do that. xD I'll see if I can fix that. | 2009-06-14 08:35:00 Author: Loius Posts: 342 |
After I saw your reply to my level I had to check to see if you had any new ones because I remembered absolutely loving your pinball wizard level. Turns out that you did, so I went ahead and gave it a go. + I am going to be repeating a lot of what others have said, and there's not much negative I can say about the level at all. The silhouette style suits this level really well and using the green accents around the level is also really effective. + Loved all of the little effects you had such as the splattering when you killed the enemies. + Alway been a fan of being able to string together really nice combos with bubbles in levels too. + Also really loved when you dropped down into the cave area. Once you started moving to the right there were all of these column like rock structures that were all in different layers that just looked really nice as you ran by them and they moved at different speeds because of being in different layers. I wish that would have been utilized more in the level. - The only problem that I had was the boss. I ran over and grabbed the bug bombs which I was told I was supposed to feed to him so I positioned them under his mouth when he stopped and then let the floor throw them up into his mouth. He then would eat them and the green splatters would come out of the bug and no harm would be done to the plant. I made him eat several of them before getting frustrated and having to quit the level. I am not sure if I was doing something wrong there or if the level just happened to mess up that time ... but I will run through it again I am sure. | 2009-06-19 22:56:00 Author: Coreymill Posts: 85 |

Glad you enjoyed it! Except for the malfunctioning boss. Honestly, that thing does some weird stuff. Nothing in the level is on the far thick layer except the base of the plant and the paintballs that are shot at it. There's nothing to block the emitter and since it's on dark matter there's nothing to move it so it aims in the wrong direction. :/ There are still high scores being submitted, and I haven't changed it since the contest started, but I'll run through it again and see if I can duplicate the problem / find something that could possibly obscure the emitters. ... The paintballs are emitted inside of gas... could that be the problem? I've never had a problem with emitting inside gas, but... LBP physics. >..< | 2009-06-20 00:46:00 Author: Loius Posts: 342 |
OMG this was one of the best levels I've ever played. What more can I say?? After this and Pinball Wizzard, I think I have a new favourite creator. | 2009-06-20 09:22:00 Author: CheesyMcFly Posts: 211 |
Joy! ^..^ No problems passing the boss, then? That Daddy Plant is makin' me angriest >:| | 2009-06-20 12:27:00 Author: Loius Posts: 342 |
XD. Awesome level! Loved the art style. The boss was a refreshing change. When I saw the green bar I thought it was just going to be another boring paintinator battle, and I was very glad it wasn't. | 2009-06-20 17:35:00 Author: iiiijujube Posts: 594 |

Hey, just popping in this thread to say how much I appreciated this level. Art style is very apealing, the way things actually go splat is awesome to say the least This is what a five star level looks like I can't leave much detailed feedback because I played this a little while ago, but I remember I ended up with a red-flashing checkpoint once during the level, but I made it on the last try of that tough section, and it was all the more rewarding Great mini-storyline too :star::star::star::star::star: | 2009-06-24 17:17:00 Author: KAPBAM Posts: 1348 |
