Theo Jansen Walker?

Archive: 11 posts

I had an idea for a bipedal walker, and I don't think its been done before.
I'm guessing many of you have no idea who Theo Jansen is. He is an architect/scuptor/engineer, who creates amazing walking machines out of wood.
Heres some pictures of some of his work:

Now, it would of course be impossible to recreate something this complicated in LBP, the underlying mechanism is pretty simple.
Here is a video of how the walking mechanism works:
YouTube - Simulation CGI of Theo Jansen 's Mechanism

I tried making a version of this is LBP, and i failed, partly because im not the best engineer, partly because it takes a lot of tinkering and balancing.

But i would LOVE to see someone on the forums recreate his work, The layers in LBp will most likely only allow a single pair of legs, but with some creativity you can probably fit in two sets. (one behind the other). As the design needs at least 2 legs to work.

If you want to see more of Theo Jansens work, just look him up on youtube. His scuptures and machines are really incredible.

I tried to make a walker in the beta based on the Theo Jansen gait, but I didn't get anything that worked. I probably could do better now. Cool to see that some people have stepped up to the challenge.2009-06-13 15:02:00

I'll try to make one soon. I love making mechanical stuff.
EDIT: I've made the blueprints, now I just need to recreate it in LBP.

I tried to make this out of curiosity and i built the shape and then the pistons were built wrong and it made peices of it break!2009-06-14 14:01:00

It doesn't use any pistons, try using rods.

When I tried creating this I must have tried 4 different blueprints and configurations using different layers and materials.

I tried this exact one you have here and it was the closest and most practical way to do it, and with some tweaking this design could work, it was the closest to success for me, so your on the right track with this design

I have the exact shape and everything, but I need help with the materials I should use, it keeps falling apart, breaking, etc.
I've tried metal, cardboard, wood, sponge, and rubber, but they all fell apart. One thing I know needs improvement is the motor in the middle, That's probably the main problem. I'll update this with pics later.

EDIT: Here's some pics. (NOTE:The back layer's rods are set to be longer than it shows, I just kept it paused to keep it aligned to the grid.)
