RSS Feed Integration

Archive: 24 posts

If you're wondering why our Front Page has been overrun by posts from Mm's homepage, it's because we're trying out something new - from now on, any posts made on Mm's homepage will be automatically posted as a Front Page News item on our site as well. It scans for new items every 10 minutes (any more could get us blacklisted!) and reposts anything new. Some changes may be made based on feedback or other factors, but for now it's functional. I may end up configuring it so it posts in the regular News area as well, but that's just a thought - I'm still unsure how to make use of this most effectively. As always, leave feedback if you've got ideas about how you'd want this improved. I'm all ears.

EDIT: From now on, all content pulled from Mm's site will be "posted" by Spaff. In all actuality, it's the system automatically posting under his account, but I figured it would be most appropriate to have his name next to the content since he does most of the newsposting on Mm's site.

Ditto what Dorien said, I doubt any of the admins on other sites would even know how to do this - let alone implement it as well! Very nice addition2009-06-06 10:17:00

Nice update. A bit messy now with all of the old posts but that will soon pass.

One issue I noticed is that they're not locked when they are posted. I've locked them all now. The best way around this would probably be to make every thread that gets posted there automatically locked and just manually unlock the community spotlight and the likes.

Now this is awesome. This website here was basically my "one stop place" for LBP and now it is even more!

Looks like they're being posted in backwards order though... Ideally the newest news would be on top!2009-06-07 03:07:00

Nope, they are actually just being posted in a semi-random order since they were all grabbed at the same time. It will post in order now that everything's been configured.

I feel like a heel... I don't really like it. That picture of Martha's "Noby noob boy" really felt like an inside joke that was inappropriate for 'our' homepage. Hideously funny thing... The Team ICO Costume Pack announcements I have no problem with for example. Didn't much care for the interview either... (I liked the interview, read it previously, over there...) Just didn't feel right here. Anyway I am sure I will be on Minority Isle with this one... perhaps the sole inhabitant!

I preferred it the old way, with a link to Mm articles, but can understand the cutting-out of the middle men, (*exhaling lament* more lost jobs) Anyway, sounds a lot easier... Just not sure everything is appropriate as news, and it may mean actual less traffic heading there (Oh, and Spaff... (( if you read this )) ...I got my answer!)

Yeah.. I can see your point as I found that pic to also be a bit uhh.. well, about as interesting as the freezer pic they had awhile back. ...but boy RSS is much much easier and insures that everything the post, gets to you. (possibly that is the issue... what they post on a slow news day!)

I have simply been collapsing them as they come in. I figure if I was hitting the MM site, I would still see that pic regardless.

I have removed the thread containing the image of the cat. Any random and unrelated to LBP posts will be removed from now on.

I have been working on it, improving the way it parses (CSS code and all that). I've had to re-add the feed every time I made changes. I've gotten it sorted, but to clean up I'm going to delete all but the most recent.

In a way I preferred having ONLY the LBPC news on the front page. I usually have the habit of going off to check out Mm's news page when I'm bored, and now its all kinda jumbled up in the one place. That's just me being neurotic

BUT there is one thing about it that maybe other people will agree on. All of the Mm news shows up FULL LENGTH. Kinda crams up the whole screen and you have to scroll a good bit down to see older posts. Is there an easy way to have them show up more compact? Or maybe just keeping the LBPC news at the top or seperate? I'm guessing you'd have to manually do it, which would be a pain... so don't bother if thats the case.

EDIT: Actually it could be a nice idea to have ALL the Mm news highlighted with a Pink Border. Or else all the LBPC news highlighted with a Green Border? Or both?

What do other peoples think, cause I don't want to be imposing my crazy ideas on others

I don't think it's your neurosis speaking Pitcard... with the RSS feed the way it is the Homepage seems more Mm 'Official' but not sure that is 'officially' good news. (Somehow) some personality, be it site specific homebrew flavour or just my aversion to change and robo-posting seems palpable to me. Perhaps I'm just in CC withdrawl... who knows? The feeling he oversees everything with such omnipotence seems to penetrate every thread of my sack-being. He is "The Force" of LBPC binding all things together.

*Adopts Yoda voice which through the years sounds much more like Grover than need be...*

"The homepage, special it...is. Devoid of his influence... there, you must read!"

Hard for me to say really... it's been a very short time, since install and then there were all the tweaks jumbling the posts... I know I didn't care much for the TV post (clicked it anyway to my lament) Borders while interesting and a great visual cue... I just don't know.

Hmmph... ignored.

This is old, but I'm wondering if anyone agrees that the latest news article (the interview with Burgerman) is WAAYY too long to have on the LBPC front page. And its not even relevant to us.

Is there any way that all the Mm news could be shortened or hidden, so that only the first paragraph shows up?

I honestly would prefer to have only LBPC news on the front page.
Seriously.... Marks visit to the prime minister O_o.... who wants to know about that... all they did was drink wine and talk about business >_>

Yeah, I'm not that interested about those things as well.

Problem is that RSS feeds post automatically and mods are human beings (I think) so sometimes
they can't see everything in the first few minutes.

By the time the article has gotten multiple replies, I think they just decide to leave it as it is most of the time.

Not with the way the current system works, no. It's either all or none in this case. And regarding LBPC news, we use the New Updates system for that (unless it's something big, like a Community Spotlight - then we do both).
