What would you like to see in a fansite?

Archive: 8 posts

I'm considering making a fansite, so I ask: what would you like to see in one?

Some examples would be: Nice looking, original design: not via a site creator, lbp related flash games, an adobe flash website, a close relationsip with mm, a guarantee on getting the news fast, cooperation with mm for crown-winning contests.

Whatever you'd like, tell me about it! Be as specific as you can, you could even include 'musts' and 'not a must, but would make it stand out from other fansites'

Remember, if this site is built, it will be built around you, so I really welcome your feedback.

I know of some good fansites *cough* http://www.sackcast.com/ *cough*
Just take a look around and see what is working for everyone else.
Try to get all the good stuff from each fansite.

That seems like the way forward, its really hard to get any feedback whatsoever, and I've tried asking on several different sites.

The problem is, I'd prefer it to be something new, otherwise it'll just be a version of existing sites with less visiters.

I've made one on a free but limited site already, called www.creationgroup.tk and I think it demonstrates that i could build a decent site without the limits of free 'site-builders'. it's all my own graphics too...

Well if i were to make a Fansite, i would definetly try to make it like this one, because this one is Sick. I Would make a section about Showing off SackBoys/SackGirls and have little contests to see who had the best. Thats just my suggestion but if you don't like it thats OK.2009-06-07 15:49:00

For me, the site needs to be well-designed (as with the one you have a link to), have contact with Mm, and have plenty of competitions with great prizes.
That's just me though. Oh, and it should have a place to showcase your levels

I think I have a really great idea for a contest, but I don't wanna reveal it just yet...

And i kind of need a 'hook' for my site, a reason fr it. This has a great forum, littlebigguide has its guide, sackcast has its podcast. Now I need an idea!

Aim for good a good hosting package, something that will protect you against the many QoS (and other) attacks a popular website endures daily. If you're not paying at least $50-$100 a month, you're probably not well protected, which means one successful attack and your whole site is gone.

Also, put a lot of work into building the community's trust - promising all these things sounds great, but you'd have even more support if you were honest about the endeavor (I'd like to do this, this, and this, but I'm not sure about this, and this is something I don't know how to do). The community will instantly have more confidence in what you say (and, more importantly, in you) if you are as honest as possible.

Start considering the kind of software you're going to want to use - if you're looking to build a community, vBulletin is a fantastic piece of software as it allows you to do almost anything with it. It's about $100 a year, but if you buy an "owned" license, it only costs $180 for lifetime use on one site. Still, if you want updates (new features, security fixes, etc), you have to shell out $60 every year that you're interested in updating, so it's still expensive.

Do you have experience with HTML/CSS? That's a basic, "need to know" skill set with vBulletin, as you won't get far with extending it and adding new features to it if you don't get comfortable with the Template system.

Thanks alot for the reply! Right now I'm kinda just looking for a reason for the site. I'm building the main site in flash and assembling it in dreamweaver, and its the forum I'm most worried about and inexperienced in...

(so I might come crying for help some time soon!)

I'll likely try to find some sort of free html host with which to fiddle about with it before I go buying a domain name, and all that other stuff you mentioned. I'm out of my depth right now, but there's no timeframe I have to release within, so I'm not too worried.

I'm full of ideas, and worse case scenario, if the forum doesn't materialise, I could just get one at forumotion.com or something, mainly as a place to deal with competition entries, that sort of thing.

I've got a long long way to go, but it'll be a great thing to do for the first time
