Little Big Apocalypse: The Animation - PICS/Concept art ::

Archive: 71 posts

I do a series called Little Big Apocalypse on LBP. Check it out, my PSN is JonMartin. Anyway, this is concept art from the animation I'm working on. The final episode of the series is going to be animated.

Tell me what you think

Well, i'm not sure what to say lol. I played through the first 5(?) of your levels- loved the story, but had to stop. Haven't gone back to them yet, as i'd want to replay the first 5 again lol. I don't think i have a really good opinion as i haven't heard the full story.

Your sackboy looks somewhat depressing, particularly with the missing eye, but i think it works.

It looks a very sad sackboy

Haven't played your levels, but will. They look rockin'.

This is a piece in progress? Looks good so far though that mushroom cloud being blurry is in stark contrast to the very defined lines elsewhere... not so pleasing on my eyes....
I would stay with solid colors throughout to keep theme, but with only two images to judge you should take this advice as lightly as possible

Yeah it's work and progress... Sackboy loses his eye in episode 17 of the series, so that's why it's like that. He's supposed to look sad, its part of the story.

That nuclear explosion is pretty far away but I agree, it has to be more defined!

Oh and this is going to be a 10 min long animation that will conclude the series!

Thanks for the comments I'm going to keep updating this thread when I have stuff I think it worth seeing

Lol, looks good, only problem is that, well, this will probably be better recieved than the series! :hero: There will be no menacing 10 year olds to destroy you

EDIT: What a malnourished Sack!!!

I think it probably will be received better. I'm including a lot of the music from the game, so I think people will get really hyped while they watch.. and there is a big boss fight. I'm going to make it very cinematic.

I'm hoping it'll make people go out and get a copy of Little Big Planet.

I just noticed you have a thread on this after admiring your pics in the gallery.

How far is this animation in production? I'm pretty excited for this.
You've really made LBP your own in your levels and it seems you're doing the same with your animation.

A question on my mind: Will the sackboy be a silent character or will he carry a voice?

Show us a teaser clip the moment you got one, Snowspot!!

The most epic all star series of LBP, that makes everything else look like laziness and a lack of creativity ... it deserves an animated spin off and I think the creative license you took with it looks awesome. Can't wait to enjoy this when you get it out there.2009-06-22 23:30:00

I'm also, as Ninja, a HUGE fan of this series - and have been virtually the entire time I've owned LBP (man... has it been that long?)

I'm really looking forward to the animated series. If it's up to par (which I'm sure it will be) with your other online animated series, this should be VERY cool!

Hey, here to update anyone following the series.

Unfortunately I didn't get spotlighted! I was hoping I would because I wanted more publicity(lol) for the animation's release but it looks like my flash animation will have to judged by and become popular by it's own artistic merits.

Gah.

Maybe level 20 sucks, I can't really tell. I feel like it's really an achievement, maybe just for me, as some of the levels I'm seeing these days are just beyond my scope of creation/imagination.

I was thinking of doing another Little Big Planet series but it looks like LBA will be it. I might continue the series in animation form though. It doesn't seem worth it, the way Little Big Planet is currently set up, to foster a long series. At least one that is so narrative-based. Maybe some of the obstacles were too hard. I'm not sure what I did wrong. I kind of consider the series a failure right now but I'm still going to finish all this.

1 more level to do, the final boss level on my new account. The account name is:

SiberiusMartin

Here are some pics because text is lame.

I'm going to release the animation on 9/8/09 on newgrounds.com. ORiginally I was going to do 9/11/09 but I want to get this out before the new film "9". I have no idea what the story is for that film but I don't want people to think I copied it. I have a sickening feeling that both our stories end the same way. There can only be one ending to an apocalyptic Sackboy film about scientists. Grrr.. So I am releasing it a day before the film. I am working my butt off! It's going to be 15 min long.

Here's hoping newgrounds can help boost awareness of Little Big Apocalypse.

Level 20 certainly doesn't suck.... I enjoyed it. I think it could use a bit of tweaking in some areas for playability, but you have no thermo left to do it. Writing quality wise, I found it the best in the series.

My personal suggestion on this series?

a. You need editing - this is an epic movie-level script which could be condensed a bit into something that could be swallowed more easily.

b. You need producers - people to go through and tell you where parts of the gameplay need tweaking.

This is definately the most ambitious series' in LittleBigPlanet, but because of that it's difficult to be objective. But I DEFINATELY would not call it a failure.

I wouldn't worry too much about the spotlight if I were you. It's great, but when it comes down to it, it's just 4 people and their opinions. It really holds no more weight than any 4 replies you might get on a level showcase thread.

My positive support here consistently comes from a small handful of people who already really like what I do, and know what's up.

Ccub and I love your stuff... IMO, that's like when I get good feedback from people like Gruntos, wexfordian and mrsupercomputer, and a few others who's work I really enjoy and respect - it makes you feel like you're your favorite creator's favorite creator. At that point, it's easy to forget about all the people who won't play it, or try extremely hard to find something wrong with it.

Besides... even if all 20 episodes had been spotlighted every time, that would end up being redundant lol it'd be like "ok, we get it... it's awesome"

You know..... MAYBE the best thing to do with this project is to get a small team of "editors" together. Some people like Ninja, Jaeyden, Myself (I believe Wex enjoys them also) - and any others who really enjoy this series to go through and make some "playability" notes - then, trim it up a bit, add the ending, and then you'll have a full series that we can push out through cool pages.

Personally, I think if you took 20, split the tail-end chunk out of it and put it into another level with the final boss you wanted to do... that would give you enough thermo to fool-proof the mechanics in 20 (for instance, emitting the vehicle so that if it breaks you get a do-over).

The first few levels are incredible, and then there's a few in-between where the story could be combined a bit - the series, I feel, suddenly goes into full-swing on #12.

Just a thought - this is definately a REALLY well written and fun indie series. I think it has huge potential - but to me it's kind of like having a HUGE amount of content on the cutting room floor and needing to splice a bit to create the completed package.

Yes, actually, your ideas are cool Snowspot, but maybe you pushed something too far.
Some platforming areas are nearly impossible, I'm good at the game, and I know when I jump at the wrong time or for too long, I know if I am the reason of sackboy's death.
In the levels that I tried from the series, you don't ever know for sure the results of a jump, since it only dependss on autolevel skipping, will of the PS3, direction of the whole piston system in the level in the second you jump, due to the opening of a mouth in the moment you hit the right jump.

The all the lights make you feel an headache.
You should really listen some tips from someone here that can make your levels and saga enjoyable since now it's not.

If you want people to listen to your story (a story that deserves to be listened) you can't frustrate the player.

These are my two cent, sorry if I have been rude, but I hope this will help.

See, I find that this same logic can be applied to levels that appear polished and perfect, even spotlight choices... in that they're unoriginal, orthodox, and are driven by very juvenile and uninteresting narrative concepts (if any at all) - they leave you with any empty feeling and satisfaction found only in the fleeting moment of conquest, like a one night stand.

Everything can always be improved, and JonMartin has always done this consistently for every episode of the series since he first started publishing them. For all the frustration you can find the platforming here, I can find frustration in the rudimentary balancing of a level others seem to find "perfect"

Since I see it as an experience that's continuously being molded and shaped into fruition, not to be had and forgotten... I can weigh the value of that core experience, and it ultimately feels more rewarding to me than an equal amount of more polished and streamlined "single serving" experiences with no connective relation and no opportunity for further evolution to be built around their empty and hollow core.

The layout is somewhat confusing, the platforming can be pretty finnicky, but the presentation is very original, tons of cool effects, and the story is the best there is. There's alot of multipathing and secrets that add new layers to the story the more you explore for replay value.2009-07-30 06:17:00

I never got around to finishing every single one, I played probably about 16 of them.

But I have to say that this series blows my mind, I don't know how a human is capable of such a twisted, and dark story as this one. I mean when I first played the series, I thought it was rubbish, absolutely ugly in every way, way too hard for the normal player, "what the hell is up with these eyes just placed everywhere?"

But after I went through the 4th, 5th, etc... It suddenly hit me that this is really an amazing series man, I don't know what else to say but just EVERTYHING from the story, to the platforming, to the amazing presentation. It just, it leaves me speechless, I sometimes don't think your human to be honest.

Anyways, I thought I'd just leave my 2 cents as I see you think your series is a failure, and all I want to say is I wouldn't want the series any other way and I for one am glad you made it.

This series is absolutely not a failure, but is not accessible for everyone.
That's it. And I find that it's a pity, since very few tweaks in the levels would make it awesome and enjoyable for everyone.

I think that you had a reason to make platforming sections as they are, and I think that some kind of integrity of vision that you had in your levels and you don't want to sell out.
And I respect you for this, since it's exactly how I too would behave.

But if you want to maximize the visibility of your series you have to tweak something.
The success of this series depends from you.

I agree 100% with Whaaale... I also understand the idea behind what OmegaSlayer is saying. It's true, but I honestly think that there's absolutely nothing you can do to make this appeal to everyone no matter how much you tighten it up, slice it up or conform it.

From my experience it simply does not matter how amazing your work is or how much time you put into it. The harder you try to create a masterpiece that's original and outstanding to you, the more likely you are to alienate the greater majority, and impress very few. This is because it is so specific, so original, so tailor made, original, and far from the norm...

I create the same way that you do... I try to make writing, gameplay, and visual art coalesce together because these are my interests and what I find appealing. Anything less than 5 stars and "brilliant/beautiful/artistic" boggles my mind, because what I make is what I would enjoy from others, and you should think the same way.

Anyway... getting off topic. Can't wait for the animation, so keep working on it.

I came here to post a new pic or two and saw all these great comments.

Thanks for the kind words guys, maybe I was a bit dramatic in calling it a failure... or maybe I just set unattainable standards for myself, or something... who knows!

I understand what you are saying OmegaSlayer but I kind of like that brutal difficulty in certain segments. The first 5/6 levels are pretty difficult, then it gets somewhat easy, then hard again, then easy again as the story takes the main focus. I'm always changing stuff so I will go back and check out the levels and figure out what I can put in to keep it challenging but not TOO challenging. I've gone back and added so much stuff, lots of secrets and not boring secrets, secrets that reveal hidden parts of the story. Anywayyy thanks for the criticism, I'm going to go take another look.

Cubbage and Ninja always got my back, haha thanks guy. Oh and Whale thanks, I'm happy you liked it. I think the animation will blow your mind if you liked the story. I've only got 30 days to finish it! I'm kind of going crazy trying to get it done. Look for a badass trailer sometime in the next 15 days.

Oh I remember playing these levels. I really enjoyed them. I played through episode zero to seven (all that was out at the time) and gave as much feedback as I oculd in them. Like areas that were confusing on what to do next or dialogue that was skipped or killed you because it moved the camera. I still have all my notes from that hehe. I'm going to play the rest of them because I have only gottoen to about nine. Looking forward to the video. If you want, I could play each episode again and give feedback for each level again.2009-08-03 22:41:00

I love Little Big Apocalypse, it's a landmark series - the first profile series, in fact ... I'm just stuck on level 4 (pretty sure it's 4). Could someone tell me what I'm suppose to do? I get into the garden, go up a ... thing ... and right before I reach some big blue clouds, there's a button . I hit the button, the whole platform shifts, and I can't reach the clouds.

Is there something I'm missing? Am I not suppose to hit the button?

Doesn't look like I'm going to make the september 8th release date. THings are coming along pretty smoothly, I spent about the last week finishing the ending of the animation. It's about 4 min long and I came up with the idea out of nowhere but HAD to use it.

Right now, it's about 75% done.... but it's 75% of the best work I've ever done!(does that make sense?) I have been holding off with pictures because I don't want to ruin what happens... I notice that a lot with films and games, they ruin the cool surprises in trailers or promotional pictures. There are quite a few surprises and interesting concepts in the animation. The narrative spins off in a completely unexpected direction toward the last 5 minutes.... and hopefully it will make you smile when you watch.

I'm going to give myself another month. I still need to animate two major fight scenes and I'm working on a narrated recap of the story that will play before the animation starts.

I want non-PS3 owners and non-LBP players to see this and hopefully want to play the game or at least see what LBP is all about. I guess we'll see what happens.

This will be my last update before release. I still need some time but everyone will be happy with what I've come up with. It's something I want people to remember and the stuff that happens is pretty memorable.

All things end... but what if this really isn't the end for Sackboy? What if there was a way for Sackboy to prevent what happened? What is the Hindleast's invention? What will happen to the builder?... and what if all this madness and chaos is being observed from afar? Sackboy, The Eyes, The Builder, The Nanovirus.. whether they know it or not, they are on a collision course with a power greater than any of them could have imagined.

Ahhh, this thing is driving me nuts, but in a good way, I guess. The animation isn't done but it's almost there, you will all be pleasantly surprised, I assure you. Here are some more pics to hold people over.

There will be three 10-15 minute episodes.

I'm doing this stuff at warp speed while still trying to retain my style, I'm pretty happy with how it's turning out. You will recognize tons of elements from LBP. On top of making this as good and original as possible, I wanted to make this a very emotional experience for anyone that has played LBP and I think I've done my job. I want to release this by X-mas day, either that or my birthday, Jan 1st.

You'll see why I thanked Radio 1 when it comes out, don't want to spoil it. It's very different than what anyone is expecting.

And yes, the episodes will all be coming out at once.

The eyes are pretty mean, they would probably massacre a ton of people if everyone weren't dead.

This cartoon will be for adult audiences.

I'm not really sure, it all depends on how much polish I should add, there are a few scenes that aren't done too... some editing I have to do, all the voice acting.

It's a lot of work but it's making me a much better animator and my storyboards are starting to look like manga

I release something January 1st, either the first episode or a trailer for the trilogy.

Little Big Apocalypse - Episode 1
Watch: Click here (http://www.newgrounds.com/portal/view/557965)

Synopsis: A sackboy wakes up after the apocalypse. With little idea of what came before him, he wanders the wasteland for most of his life. Until a very unusual day, when he discovers a building he's never seen before.

Notes: After finishing up two (http://www.newgrounds.com/portal/view/537675) other cartoons (http://www.newgrounds.com/portal/view/555427), I've finally started to release Little Big Apocalypse on newgrounds.com.

What is Little Big Apocalypse?: Little Big Apocalypse was a series that I created on Little Big Planet. I created 21 levels, spanning two usernames (JonMartin/SiberiusMartin). Several of my levels were spotlighted on LBPcentral (http://www.lbpcentral.com/forums/search.php?searchid=504829). <--check em out there

I created the animation as the the final "level" and also a recap of what happened in the series. I expect it to release 6-7 more episodes in the coming months, each around 5 minutes. I've been on this site since LBP was released and I was even on the LBP2 Beta! I hope people will check this out, I spent a lot of time on it and that will hopefully become more evident as more episodes are released.

Any reviews or comments would really be appreciated

Check out the Trailer for the series:

Nice animation you have there.
Best part about it is the mood/atmosphere.

I agree with the critical comments on newgrounds:
"How did a Sack-boy from a game emerge into the real world?"
"kinda good, but choppy"
I didn't mind the rough style, nice to see something different to smooth stuff from flash.

My biggest critique would be the font used, and how the music didn't fade out when it needed to.
You can fade out the music inside Flash (I assume that's what you used).
Also I found the rap music a bit jarring for the apocalyptic setting.

Still nice work overall. I shall look foward to the rest of the story.
