Mars Attacks I: Introductions

Archive: 49 posts

I've finished and posted my newest level, Mars Attacks I: Introductions. Its taken 4 weeks, and finally its done, its the first in a four part series, the other parts to follow. Here is the level description.

Dispatched to Mars to find out why they are not replying to Earths calls, a Frigate full or Marines comes under heavy attack from the surface. Once on Mars, what will they find?

The level is basically an introduction to the series, I've tried to make it as cinematic as possible to keep intrest up in the rest of the parts to follow. There are no puzzles in this episode, just platforming, paintinator and plenty to look and watch

Here are some pics.

I'll do any and all F4F.

Things I notice as they happen:

- Looks good!
- You put the apostrophe in the wrong place a few times. It`s didn`t not did'nt etc.
- Very cinematic. I love the stuff going on around you, like the escape pods and whatnot.
- Why`s Mars so green?

Gave it 5 stars and a beautiful tag. Looking forward to the rest.

Just tried this one. Really enjoyed it. It's very cinematic while your playing it, there's stuff falling, and shooting off everywhere. Which makes it very fun to watch while your running through. Everything looks great, looking forward to the next one. Great work!!!!2009-06-06 02:42:00

My gosh... you must have magic powers because there is soooo much going on, it looks like the thermometer would be overflowing!

This level reminds me of an actual movie due to the intense action sequences, the epicness, and the constant danger! I love it! The setting is great, and looks beautiful and VERY detailed. But, I've got to say, when you drop down onto the planet, that was AMAZING. The plasma balls flying past, and the ships exploding was just jaw dropping, but once you started to enter the atmosphere... well that was beyond beautiful. It looked as if your ship was going through clouds, and the way you made the lighting change was perfect! The boss battles were both great, and gave a good challenge, which is great!

Now, as Matt said, there were a couple of grammatical errors at the start, but aside from those the level was perfect!

I can't wait for part 2! 5 stars and a well deserved heart.

Also, no F4F is necessary.

This level has so much detail, I think my eyes started bleeding!

This is definately your best level, and a great entrance into a new series. Great gameplay - loved the boss.

One thing I ran into (which is.... ironic, since you hit almost the same issue with my Splat II level) - near the end, you can just grab the material blocking you from reaching the scoreboard and pull it out instead of going up to face the boss.

Very minor though - and I pulled the material out, but went up anyway

Really fun level! Serious action and some great visuals! Seems to work with 2x very well too. Great cinematic quality to it and I love the pod sequence. Boss is great looking and not impossible so I quite liked that section. You tease with the personnel carrier though! Argh - wanted to play with it NOW... LOL

Wonderful Level - I think I like it even more than the From Siberia series. 5 stars & hearted! Thanks...although the rate you're turning these out is putting me to shame! I'm still working on the same level I started 2 months ago! Darn real life.... Nice work GrantosUK.

Yah, I know what you mean
You keep putting out these great levels at an alarming fast pace.
I wish I could do that!!

Anyways on to the feedback:
Changed a lot since its test stages!!

I loved the visuals you were able to pull off in this one.
The escapepods blasting off are an especially nice touch.
You actually felt the danger of the ship ready to explode!!

The boss looked great and was fun to play, not too hard wich is a nice change.

This level was so different from the Siberia series in terms of construction wich really impressed me.
You have the skills to adapt to different styles.

I can't wait to see what you do with the sequels.
I'm betting you'll bring down the cinematic look a little to bring in your trademark
"awesome puzzles" but I'm not complaining.

So a great looking level that played like a dream.
Gave it 5 stars and threw a heart in there for good measure.
Well done, Grantos!!

Thanks for the comments everyone.

I was sort of worried that there was not a lot of my usual style of creating in there, secrets, puzzles and backtracking/overlapping. Also that people would'nt get what I was going for, but it seems I was concerned for nothing. I'm pleased people are enjoying it. You're right Zwollie, the next one starts with a bit of cinematics but goes back to the normal style for the rest, part 3 will be like the first, 4th back to the normal style.

Mars is green because when I tried to do it red, the fire did'nt stand out on the ruined buildings and the clouds did'nt look right. The clouds are actually there to hide switches and DM that trigger the lighting changes, pods flying past and explosions.

I've fixed the movable door Ccubbage, thanks for noticing that.

I did'nt have time to look at the grammar, the wife wanted the TV, and in all fairness, I had it all last night trying to finish the level up

I've also added two checkpoints at the boss, it seems younger players were getting stuck there, and I don't like infinite life checkpoints, so that seems a good balance.

As for the speed of creating, well I have my own buisiness, and work is fairly slack at the moment, so I'm a house husband/creator for most of the week

Anyway, thanks for playing, I'll look at the grammar when I have more time

Grant

EDIT: Grammar now fixed.

Ah yes, a GrantosUK level - everyone's favourite time of the week...but wait, you haven't had one out for.....a month or so?
You work very quickly, and to such a great standard people are starting to expect things from you Grant

Pros:
+ The visuals of a war torn Mars are brilliant
+ The ship is designed well
+ The monologue at th beginning
+ I've always been a fan of Wex-style openings (GrantosUK presents......)
+ Good choice of materials
+ Lovely creature design
+ The mini-boss thing was fun

Cons:
- Not much really, I suppose sometimes it's a little too chaotic, but that's war for you!

5 stars and a heart from me

Well, can't really give you a review as i use my reviews to tell people about bugs and other small mistakes on their levels, but there aren't any in this one...
The only one i already told you about and you fixed it, so now it has no flaws and my review can probably be what i said in that message....
Inother words...
Outstanding job doing this level m8!
6/5
And 2 hearts
You managed to put together challenge and visuals, now THAT's a level.

Man... the stuff I didn't get to see is killer. I had no idea you were going to add that much more in... it's always nice for me when someone has a monster boss like that, and it's NOT the end of the level heh

What I like most about this level is how every spot is alive with some kind of effect, mechanism, calamity, or details... like the drop ship bridge. I think my favorite spot is the hull breach - that felt very realized, and was a really cool platforming segment. The total blackness/invisibility of the gas below was a nice touch that people probably don't notice - that's the kind of seamless, unobtrusive immersion I'd like to see in more levels when people incorporate their hazards.

I had two bars left after the boss Ninja so I decided to use them, they filled up rather quickly though and the level is now at bursting point. There was only kappa that saw the new section just before I published last night, to make sure the dropship releasing the APC segment worked OK.

Thanks for the kind comments again everyone, much appreciated!

I hate it. This is hands down the worst level I've ever played. It's bad and you should feel bad. Also, where tha rokit cheeters, yo?

****. Someone hit my "opposite button" again. Hang on. ...

Ahem. .. That's better. I played this level when it was unfinished, but it's AMAZING... at first I thought, when I saw the title, that it was going to be related to that movie I hate, but instead it was related to everything awesome. Grant, you can definitely see your obsessive compulsive nature shining through in this one, the detail is impeccable. I am usually not into space levels, or war levels or anything that uses the materials that you use in your levels, and I love your levels, so that is saying something. ^_^

I also must say that you made this very "larry-proof" as well. He wasn't able to break anything or wedge himself into anything.

I'm going down now to play the completed version I think, but, to everyone, this is a very enjoyable level. It's wonderful, and amazing how quickly you work. Recommended to everyone! ^_^ In other words, PLAY THIS NOW!

That is all.

Thanks for the comments.

I'm not really a fan of sci-fi levels but:

Pros:
- good intro
- nice name
- awesome looks
- nice ninjas in rockets
- great but easy boss
- cool enemies

Cons:
- short, but I don't blame ya with so much details
- it's missing that special GrantosUK treatment. Backtracking, mini-puzzles and so on...

I really don't like sci-fi levels but this one got me. 5 stars & heart

Some lovely looking stuff here, all the ships and pods zooming around in the background especially! : )

A couple of (very) minor things. The switch in the lift that takes you up to the flare would be better inverted, when you walk out the lift at the top you can push the switch accidentally and start going back down again. Also, at the flare sequence there's a visible magic mouth and green switch. Looking forward to Pt 2!!

I'll have a look at that, I agree, it does cause problems.

You know, I've covered that with gas I don't know how many times, it appears normally, hit the switch and it vanishes!!

Thanks for the comments, I'm looking forward to Dagobah!! I went to play the other day and you'd taken it down, I just missed out

EDIT: Fixed them problems julesyjules. The switch is now inverted and the gas was on the closest plane intead of the back one! DOH!

I feel your pain. As soon that thermo gets in that last block you can guarantee them gremlins. Great intro anyways! As an aside, this forums Matt82 has a couple of really funny Mars levels (in a much more B-movie vibe), definitely worth a play alongside your more serious take.

Yay! A new level from one of my favorite authors. Here's what I think of it:

+Nice scenery in the beginning introduction.
+Another interesting storyline.
+Those ships (I think they were enemy ships) looked amazing.
+The rooms getting destroyed telling you that you have to evacuate immediately is pretty cool. I like the room where you have to find another way around to get out.
+Outer space while flying in the pod looked awesome!
+Mars looks great, very nice boss there too.
+Ooh can't wait to drive that thing.
-It was pretty short but I that's ok since there was a lot of things happening in the level and plus it was an intro.

Another nice level, I'm really looking forward to part 2. I gave it 4 stars and I already hearted you as an author since I liked all your other levels.

Edit: I was really surprised about the no puzzles or backtracking thing, those were my favorite things about your other levels but you actually made it work without it. Good job!

Yes he might have made it larry proof (whoever that is XD) but he didn't make it Yaru-proof
@ Gruntos:
I was able to break off a couple of other stuff m8 (appart from that other thing i already told you about, but you already fixed it so it doesn't count), not THAT big of a deal with these, but i'll still tell you later, you can jusdge if its important or not.

I just played this.

Not really much to say. After your last level, which you know my opinion on, this was MUCH better. I loved the visuals, very cool. Three things:

Length. I guess there isn't much you can do, but I was left begging for more.

When the space ships fly past, they look too uniform. Maybe if they were flying by themselves or something, or just moving in general. They dropped too straight.

Gameplay could have been a bit more, but I see that's not the point.

I liked everything else. Brilliant. 5 stars and a heart.

Sorry, Larry is "Catiers" ... he's my husband and the one who made most of my levels with me. He's REALLY good at breaking things, as is our friend VMethos. We spend hours actually TRYING to break our own levels. And sometimes we also break things when we don't try

Usually, when I play one of grant's levels, Larry or I will get wedged somewhere that it's not even humanly possible to get wedged in. lol. That didn't happen in this one though! ^_^

This was a visual treat! The opening was very well done and I really liked all the "scripted events" that take place throughout the level. The aliens and drop ships flying back and forth as you progress through the level really added to the immersion. Your creatures were also fantastic! I loved the look of both the mini boss and the final boss.

Very fun level! Well done!

Absolutely wonderful!
+presentation as a movie
+dark to light entry to gameplay
+sense of urgency
+Immediately into action
+requires thinking
+very nice visuals
+creative boss

Two minor nitpicks
-close game post: the smile doesn't seem to fit. Maybe sticker it to blend?
-insertion pod seemed less detailed then your others

Overall I really enjoyed this level. It draws you in and leaves you wanting more!

Gave it a quick play through. Really cool level. I'm surprised there wasn't any of your trademark platforming areas where you return to a central point.

The only suggestion I would have is to diversify the boss battle a little bit. Great level overall. 5 stars and a heart.

Awesome job Gruntos! Played this the other night. Was a bit worried (j/k), as I also have a Mars level coming.. Really loved how you had so much going on all the time. Really was just a fantastic level from start to finish. Will play it again and will take my friends in with me. I always seem to post late in people threads so my feedback has already been covered by people before me. Outside of what has been mentioned, I loved the level and congratulate you on a job well done, once again. 2009-06-08 02:34:00

Hi Gruntos

Played this last night, and here's my thoughts...

As soon as the level loaded, I knew I was in for a treat. Great intro! Have you got double the thermo everyone else has? j/k I was amazed at how much you managed to fit in.

PROS
+ wonderful visuals and atmosphere
+ well-balanced difficulty
+ everything worked as it should
+ good pacing and playability
+ good and worthy introduction to the series

CONS
- bit hectic at times, but that's hardly a con!
- I completely understand why you went for a green look because of the fire visibility, I just wish you could colour tweak individual objects so Mars could still be the Red Planet!

OVERALL
A very interesting, enjoyable and satisfying level, which I will recommend to friends. 5*, Hearted, tagged with 'Brilliant' the first time and 'Splendid' the second (just because I've never ever used it before!)

Cheers,
MrsSB

(PS - Thank you for your comments on Hyper Sphere. Glad you liked it )

Hi Grantos, I thought this level was one of you best yet!

I loved the "entry" sequence.
The Boss was tough but fair.
Great use of the smoke effect!
I found no bugs or annoyances.... Bit of lag sometimes but not much you can do about that.

Overall, a top notch Introduction to what will no doubt be a very interesting series of levels.

5 of the best and of course hearted!

Hi GrantosUK. I finally got to play all of "Mars Attacks I: Introductions" this morning. The other day, I only got to do the Boss part on one of the times my wife Lady_Luck__777 played it. So, here's some comments on my experience.

I really liked the intro. of your intro. Very well designed, and great attention to detail. Thanks for catering to my "visual needs". When the 2 craft moved across the lower part of the screen, I pressed the "Pause" button on my controller, so I could zoom in on them for a closer look--funny how that doesn't work too well in "PLAY MODE".

I liked the way you threw me into the action--pods launching, burning debris, and chaotic destruction everywhere. Oh, btw, I'm a Sci-Fi buff, or is it I'm buff, and I like Sci-Fi. Guess my wife will have to answer that one. Anyway, this level was great, and even though I lost some lives to the Boss, I'm here giving a review, so I did get the best of him.

Please forgive me, but I was compelled to rate it 5-Stars, and Heart the level and you as a Creator, or was it I'm compelling and rated it 5-Stars...(forgive me again, it's almost med time).

Bravo! Well Done!

I highly recommend everyone play this level.

And I'm really looking forward to what a Sci-Fi Creator has to say about the latest republish of my level Taken (Part 1)-The Beginning. It's my first baby, so to speak, and always hungry for my attention, or was that I'm hungry and my baby needs attention.

Wow great job. All the stuff going on in the background was fantastic! The designs were really well done. There's many scifi levels out there with things that vaguely look like ships. This level not only had a really good looking ship design, but it actually had multiple of them. It really added a lot to the atmosphere. I also enjoyed seeing the other dropships getting blown up on the way down to the surface. It really made you feel like you were part of a large scale operation.

http://www.lbpcentral.com/forums/picture.php?albumid=477&pictureid=4416
Great opening. I liked the use of the R1 mechanism to advance the screens so you could time effects with each line of dialog. How does this hold up with multiplayers? I've been thinking of a similar mechanism for my future cutscenes so I'm definitely curious. You can't see the hole in the ceiling that sackboy fell through. I'm interested in where it actually was and how you got sackboy into the room.

http://www.lbpcentral.com/forums/picture.php?albumid=477&pictureid=4417
Great use of the monster pack here. A couple minor nitpicks. One, it's hard to tell when a paintinator switch is depleted. They tend to look like there's a little bit remaining. I initially missed that I had depleted the center paintinator and that the side ones were now exposed. This didn't last long. I definitely noticed when the side ones were finished because there was a scream from the monster. Something similar on the center would be great.

I also noticed that once you beat the boss, the monster sound effects continue if you move back and forth on the screen. Disabling those would be a good fix. Also, the boss music doesn't stop until you move right. Tethering this to the boss's destruction would be a cool, cinematic switch. All of this is really nitpicky though. It's a great enemy!

http://www.lbpcentral.com/forums/picture.php?albumid=477&pictureid=4418
Creature on the roof looks good, other than the stinger(?) that is shooting the plasma balls, which would be fine in any other level but looks out of place here because everything else looks so good! Maybe you could use the corner editor to make it a triangle and make the bolt invisible? Those minor changes alone would make it stand out much less.

Also, it's subtle but during the cutscene at the end when you activate the distress beacon the magic mouth on dissolve is visible in the gas on the right. It's on the edge of the screen so it may only be visible on hdtvs or sdtvs playing zoomed all the way out (aka widescreen).

Again, all of this feedback is me really nitpicking. The level is excellent and I anxiously await the sequel.

Final verdict: 5 stars, beautiful and a heart.

If you could make your way over to my Little Big Galactic Frontier level and leave some feedback on its showcase thread (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=t=12085) I'd appreciate it! I'm going to really need to work on my scifi designs to keep up with levels of your quality!

Excellent level, I greatly enjoyed it.

+Visual design and attention to detail are spectacular
+Interesting cinematic sequences
+Platforming is well done
+Boss is challenging and exciting (for the most part)

Nitpicks:
-Maybe I'm blind, but I didn't immediately notice the switches with the four jammed pods. Try drawing focus to them with lights?
-The boss was tricky, with exception to the turning target on the right. I was able to stand on the far right of the boss area and paint that target with little distraction as the plasma balls could rarely hit me there.

I gave it five stars and tagged it complex.

"Shame on me for not noticing this".... Yeah ive been taking a few breaks in LBP for now but im still on board. (Darn Streetfighter 4 is kicking my butt [needs to unlok all characters])

I did play this level before leaving for work tho... And i like everything that you made here Grant.. Its a fresh start for you and its alraedy stuck in cool levels, great job man!

I believe ive left some feedback in your comments... Im really impressed with how you manipulate things while entering the planet.

Quite short, nevertheless it'll spark plenty of interest from people.

Let me know when the next installment comes up.

Thanks for the lovely comments you added to my post - so glad you enjoyed them.

Now for your level...

Rarely have I seen a level packed with stunning visuals and action. It's not easy to blend the two and you have done this with apparent ease.

Even from the start, the level design keeps you hooked. (I loved the spaceships).

The use of colours, lighting, materials and depth are a credit to your obvious talents.

I also enjoyed the fact that you had to work to progress. Not too hard, but just enough to keep you wanting more.

This reminded me a little of Dead Space, Aliens and the film, Total Recall - all rolled into one - with plenty of suspense and intrigue.

Thought the boss was great. Here I am, surrounded by plasma balls and a huge enemy to fight, and I torched myself on the fire!!! Ah well, I am a girl!

VERY slick! Loved it! 5 stars and hearted and creator heart.

Oh my God!!!

What a level! One of my top five favorite.
I particularly loved the first part, until the boss (included!!!). This part of thelevel is so well polished that it seems really "alive"! I loved your sense of detail for visuals, sounds and lighting. There is an incredible atmosphere in the level. The Boss is awesome too (he killed me the first play, i kill him the two times following!).

My only cons is about the second part of the level. Don't get me wrong, it is actually very good, but this part seems to me less polished that the rest of the level.

A great level. 5 stars, a heart and Brilliant tag

I was running very low on thermo Takelow at the ending section. I built everything in I needed to that would advance the story then the thermo maxed out completely so I could'nt detail it like the rest of the level.

Thanks for all the comments everyone!!

Part 2 is about 50% complete now, the end and start are complete, I'm just building the rest of the level "around" them Its getting harder and harder to think of puzzles and backtracking elements without repeating myself!!!!

Considering the whole level, I was sure it was a thermo issue

I am very anxious to see next part now, and yes, it is harder to find new concepts when you already created a lot of level

Now this was an stunning level. I do ignore why I only played this this very afternoon. I mean, I've been seeing this in your sig for quite a good time, and after also playing your siberia series (there were moments in wich I did hate those. Maily when I couldn't figure out a puzzle. But, oh, boy, when I did solve those, I forgot all the pain and hating and felt heaven inside myself) wich were superb on many points. Who am I trying to fool? Those were superb at every aspect.

Ok, now for the level:

I loved how it started. Seriously, you don't get to see inmediate action at the very start of a level. Specially in the first one of a series. In fact, I don't get to know that I'm definetely playing the whole level no matter what very usually. You did make the exception on your level. It got stuck on me since the very starting.

So, what to point out? I'm not gonna give "bad" feedback on anything since everything did run completely smoothly. Hell, I really can tell when somebody has playtested his own level too many times. You definetely did.
No, no critics at all. Instead of that, I'm gonna write down things that I love in order to make your ego grow, like, really big. Mostly, because you deserve it.

The little spaceshifts at the very beginning, those 4. You know what I mean. Yes, it didn't add much to the gameplay, but I don't think that that aspect of the level can be even better or more improved.
I did really love those 4 things, yes I did. They were one of those little details that make you REALLY enjoy the level, inmerse in it. You REALLY do feel like if you're gonna crash on mars just by seeing those. Even if I my sackgirl was dressed like a mermaid. Hahaha..!

The boss, or whatever you like to call that hugeass monster. I'm not a fan of the paintnator, I want you to know that. I normally prefer levels without it.
But, wow, I did enjoy this part. Maybe it's because I'm a "Shadow of the colossus" dan, but when it comes to take down huge monster, hey, count on me. I'm completely on it!

I know that this is a bit abstract, but I did love the pacing. I hate levels in wich there are long sections in wich you simply have to run around and basically do nothing. Thanks god, this wasn't in here. I was always having fun, I was always enjoying it, I never felt bored. This is where it shows that you're definteley a creator with a lot of experience on making true gems. Oh, did I already mention that this level was another gem? Well, nevermind, now I did.

The difficulty. I completely agree with the difficulty of this level. I know that this is very subjective, but it was like perfect to me. Not too easy, and not hard at all. Thanks for that, it really made the level far more enjoyable!

I guess that my only complaint in here it's the paintnator. I don't like the device, even if you did implemented so very well in your level. I wish you didn't put it in, sometimes it feels to mee like if it it's a way of cheapening the bosses. It blows my mind imagining how fun would be your "boss" to beat without the paint gun!
But as I said, that's a personal thing. Keep in mind that the whole LBP community loves it, unlike me.

Whoa, after all this I hope your ego has really grown big. It has to!
I think that you already guessed it, but this was a 5 star and a heart from me.
Congratulations on... everything?

EDIT: Ay, caramba, it looks like I always forget the F4F thing. Could you please (if you are still doing F4F) leave feedback on my level, Lafarge's request? https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=t=13700
