SA's Grand Review Compilation #2

Archive: 5 posts

Ugh, that last 20 took a lot longer than I wanted. So much unexpected sidetracking. Well, what's done is done.

For the rest of the Grand Review Compilations, I thought I would go to the length of giving out awards to the top performers. Awards will include "Best Mechanics, Best Story, Best Humor, Best Old Fashioned Feel, Best New and Exciting, Best Replayability", and a few others as well. Enjoy, after all you guys made this possible.

Best use of in game mechanics
Well, this was actually pretty close. A lot of levels really stood out for good mechanics this run around, and everybody did a great job. The most notable I saw were Factory of Mystery, Afraid of Monster Hospital, Treetop Escape, Siberia with Love, HEIST, and Gelulupas. Overall though, this award belongs to someone that I felt just simply outperformed the competition.
Winner - From Siberia with Love (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=p=162926#post162926)

Most innovative use of in game material
Again, some pretty good contenders here, but this one really comes down to Factory of Mystery with the excellent use of the Paint gun for momentum puzzles, and The Azure Palace for it's truly amazing work with tethers and dissolve block (mostly during the boss fight). As far as being innovative, I think I'm gonna give this one to Factory, and while I think that the Azure Palace is generally a better level I also believe that Factory should be praised for using the mechanics very differently than most.
Winner - Factory of Mystery Part 1: Where am I? (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=p=134292#post134292)

Best Telling of a Story
Obviously, Uncharted Realms scored really high on this one since that's all the 2 levels really did, but let's not forget the astounding work done here by From Siberia with Love and Private Eye: The Diner. Part of telling a story is not simply a matter of content but also a matter of mood, and while Uncharted Realms has a relatively good storyline I had a bit of a hard time really getting into it, which is really the only thing keeping it from easily winning this category. Overall though, they all performed well and really I think that Uncharted will simply have to do since FSWL doesn't branch out much further than a single character (which is portrayed very well), and Private Eye's general lack of closure, so really feels like more of a tied up race where one shot the other two before the award ceremony.
Winner (but not by much) - Uncharted Realms: The Twilight Portal (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=t=11332)

Best "New and Exciting"
I can't believe I'm considering giving this one to Facial Reconstruction, simply due to it's energetic colorful, and outright bonkers setup, but I also feel like it's the right choice here. Everything this time around felt oddly nostalgic a lot of times and there was very few truly different things present here. Truth be told though, I am not giving this to FR (sorry Ninja) but instead passing this grail onto HEIST. HEIST was probably the most unexpected thing to see in these last 20 levels and like FR I totally wasn't expecting it. HEIST just feels like it has more definable substance though.
Winner - HEIST: The Midnight Star (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=p=199403#post199403)

Best "Ol' Fashioned Feeling"
From Siberia with Love is like classic James Bond, Facial Reconstruction was probably made with Alice in Wonderland kept in mind, and Jack McSetback was essentially Indiana Jones all over again. But none of them gave me the feeling of old classics more so than Private Eye, which not only does things in a truly old fashioned style but even went to the degree of producing the whole thing in complete monochrome (or black in white for all you normal people out there). This is probably as old fashioned a level as you can ever come by, and it is magnificent.
Winner - Private Eye Part 1: The Diner (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=t=10013)

Best "Laughing out Loud"
There were a few really funny levels out there. Really though, this one is a pretty obvious give away. Facial Reconstruction was absolutely bizarro in every sense, and I found myself in total glee at all moments of the level. Hilarious level, more so if you are hyper.
Winner - Facial Reconstruction (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=p=143977#post143977)

Best Replay Value
This is generally the award that survival challenges tend to thrive on, but saying as there were none of them this time the options are tougher to judge. I suppose this is between Gelulupas and HEIST, and since G felt about as close to a replay level as any I would probably go with that. HEIST is an incredible level, but I somehow see myself playing through G a lot more going for that high score.
Winner - Boss Battle - Gelulupas (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=p=163003#post163003)

Most effective use of space
Well, there are 2 levels in particular to think about with this topic. First off, there's Afraid of Monster - Hospital which manages to be about the length of any normal level but is compressed down to 4 rooms, and then there is Oculynth which uses about the same amount of space as most any level but manages to be about 3 times longer. It's close, but I'm gonna give this one to Afraid of Monster Hospital, simply due to not only the effective compression of space, but also the thorough organization of the level. Very excellently done.
Winner - Afraid of Monster - Hospital (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=p=143935#post143935)

Overall best Appearance
Tough to judge this one. Very tough. Private Eye has a style to it that makes it excellent, The Azure Palace is just so fervently detailed that it's hard to beat, and even HEIST is just loaded to the brim with detail at every nook and cranny. Heck, Temple of Sun and Moon plus Treetop Escape were also very good for overall appearance. Overall though, I'm gonna give this one to HEIST. There's something to be said for appearance here, and HEIST is just so rich with lush visuals and overall spendid appearance that it can easily walk away with this one. Well, after it shakes The Azure Palace off it's leg that is.
Winner - HEIST: The Midnight Star (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=p=199403#post199403)

OVERALL BEST LEVEL IN SHOW
This is the big one. The best level means that it had the overall greatest presentation of excellence and best playability of any stage. Viable candidates for this one ranged among the following: Private Eye, The Azure Palace, Treetop Escape, and HEIST. Private Eye and the Azure Palace are both excellent, but I think this one really comes down to Treetop Escape and HEIST, which were needless to say my 2 favorite picks for this 20. But, as spoken by the Highlander, there can only be 1, and this time......it's HEIST. Treetop escape was fun and brilliant in it's own ways, but HEIST just seemed to barely outperform it on a number of occasions. Excellent work both of you.
Winner - HEIST: The Midnight Star (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=p=199403#post199403)

That's it for awards, and if your level didn't make it this time, better luck next time. I played a very steady stream of levels around, but I'm hoping to see some more daring levels in the next run. To finish things, the following levels have been rescored:

Facial Reconstruction - 9.0 > 8.5
Hibachi Dojo - 6.0 > 5.5

Thank you all so much for sticking with me this long, more reviews on the way.

On a side note, if you haven't seen the movie "UP" yet, GO SEE IT RIGHT NOW!

Sweet awards ceremony here!

Good choices. How often do you do these?

I don't have ay expansion packs but maybe you'ld enjoy my Below the Root series (4 chapters so far including prequel - level 2 is probably the least polished but they are all spotlight levels; except my newest level chapter 3 will probably be spotlighted like they others, was only published today)

See ya around.
