Trash Panic (PSN)

Archive: 4 posts

I just bought a "new" game that came out on the PSN this week in Australia. Trash Panic is made by Japan Studios, and sees you, well, compacting trash for points. I saw it being created for the Japanese a while back and it seems the game has finally been translated and released locally.

It's a puzzle game of the stacking style, like Tetris, except far more complex. You have to consider the weight and durability of objects, as well as whether they are combustible (set on fire), biodegradable (broken down by bacteria) or explosive. There are several other things to keep in mind as well, like saving certain trash from being smashed, trying to fit everything in a limited space, and so on and so on.

In short it has a very high learning curve, but it is a solid puzzler from what I have played so far. If you enjoy stack puzzle games and are willing to take the time to work out what's going on (you won't work out this game with just 5 minutes of play time or no instructions) then I highly recommend it.

There is no demo version for this game, but there are several videos out through the PSN for free, including a tutorial one and another one or two showing general game play.

So... what do others think about this game?

I haven't got it, but it does seem interesting. I might want to go find out more about it.2009-06-05 18:23:00

Well, apart from watching the videos, there isn't really all that much to it. Certainly, there are some very complex stategies, a lot of depth, and an overall very hard game, but apart from a demo I can't see how much more could be learnt.

TLDR: If you like hard puzzlers, get this game. If you are a trophy addict or don't like puzzlers, you will likely hate this game.

I personally am really enjoying it myself. It's a very hard game though. To give you one indication of it's difficulty, you get a Bronze (yes, that's right, a bronze trophy) for playing 24 hours of gameplay. That's playing the game (and not just looking at the menus) for 1 day without a break in total. Some games give you a bronze trophy for... pressing the special attack button for the first time, or watching an intro movie. This game is not for the weak of heart. Because it's a PSN game the trophies only go up to gold, but it's certainly not one for the trophy fanatics out there.

The game has 3 difficulties for the main mode. There is an easy mode, which is hardly a cakewalk. After I think about 5 gameplay hours and fairly good skill in this genre of game, I have not finished it. The main game mode does not save your progress. You always start back at level one, even if you have cleared the first 4 levels the last time you tried. Seeing as each level can take quite a while to finish, it's not a quick game to play either.

Easy mode seems easy as it removes some of the harder elements, like less items you need to protect rather than destory, easier to use power ups, and no boss battles. Yes, there are items in this game of smashing which you need to protect, which can be quite challenging to do sometimes.

The power ups include fire starters, which ignite any highly flammable objects. Over time the heat of the fire can increase, eventually igniting things like wood, plastic, and finally metal. You are also given explosive objects which if you protect and then heat up, which makes them explode, clearing a large area out. These can have bad enviromental consequences, but I'll leave that for you to find out. Another thing with fire is that you can close the lid on your trash can, which can increase the heat of the fire faster. You have to watch how much oxygen is in the bin, however, or else the fire will go out.

There is water as well which is used as a power up. This can be combined with bacteria to break down certain objects. But then you have oil which can stop the bacteria breading... but oil is a highly flammable liquid. Basically what I am getting at is there is a lot of depth to this game, and not just in terms of dropping things into place like Tetris.

The boss battles are items that appear which you need to smash within a small time limit, or else you get penalised by a whole lot of junk filling up your space. They only occur on normal difficulty and above.

The game also has multiplayer, where both people compete to empty their bins and then put their extra rubbish in the other players bin. I have not tried that mode yet.

As well as easy and normal mode, there is not just hard mode... but... well, 4 or 5 versions of hard mode. Considering how hard easy mode is, it's not for the feint of heart.

So if you are a trophy nut and hate puzzle games, I definitely do not recommend this game. If, however, you love puzzlers, especially hard ones, and are looking for more depth and challenge in the puzzlers you play, then I do indeed recommend this one. Because it's a challenge, the "one more play" feel can become quite infectious and has you coming back for more, soon after you finish pulling your hair out after getting stumped on the same levels over and over.

It's not a cheap hardness by the way. There is a similarity (though it's not identical) to how each specific level plays out. Say... easy 3 or medium 2 have a roughly similar order to the objects that come. So it's not a matter of "Oh man, they just gave me a crap random order" sort of feel, but rather "how in the world am I going to break down that super sized piece?". Eventually you work it out, and things become easier as you work out better strategies.

But well, I've rambled enough. It's a good game. If you are a puzzle nut, buy it.

I got this yesterday and honestly can't decide whether i regret buying it xD

It's fun, but i think it lacks the 'polish' that i look for when i buy games
Like the menu is kind of annoying and some aspects seem really unfair (especially the glitches)
I guess it's just the small details that put me off though

Other than that it's a really fun game at times, if you like really hard puzzle games you'll like this even more
