Background Noises, Gadgets help

Archive: 6 posts

I need some sort of system to make backgound noises in my level, in this case bird song. I can't use the gardens theme, because then I get those annoying trees and fences in the sky, and my level needs to go from idyll to steam punk, H R Giger style ecumenopolis.

The sound loop doesn't need to be that long, but the sounds need to follow the player, and not get quieter or experiance any doppler style effects.

Build a controllable 3-way switch -

|__3-way__|

Them lines is dark matter; attach two winches from the walls to the 3-way so they'll pull it and it'll activate; set the 3-way to 'direction'

Make your soundbox work, then shrink it down.

If your level is flat enough that the music can travel in a straight line -

Get a nice, long stiff piston going from the right side of your level to the left side, attached to the sound box and some dark matter. Make sure the sound box won't intersect any level pieces or be visible (stick it on the back thin layer / shrink it to invisibility). Experiment with timing on it so it moves at about Sackboy's speed.

If your level isn't flat enough -

Use a non-stiff piston, give your sound box a round glass base, and on the same layer as it, build a guideline out of dark matter with gentle curves that'll keep it close enough to Sackboy that it's audible (it'll get dragged along the guide, moving up and down as it needs to)

Stick a 180-degree player detector switch on either side of the music box (so they'll detect the player moving off-center of it)

Attach those to your controllable 3-way switch, and attach the 3-way to the piston.

So a player tracker with a jukebox attached. If you want a player tracker a search around these forums or online for a "sackboy tracker" should give you want Loius is suggesting.

You can also make a tracker without the mess of an external 3 way switch as well, by using three pistons connected to the tracker. 1 set to directional on the right hand prox, 1 set to directional and backwards on the left hand prox and a third set to off (using a grab switch that can never be grabbed), with strength 5.

IMO it's a neater solution, but less intuitive.

PS. Big fan of giger, will be interested to see what you come up with.

Well I wasn't expecting a exact reproduction of any of his works lol, but if you can capture the feel of it, through an LBP filter so-to-speak, it'll be great.2009-06-07 14:47:00
