Valkyria Chronicles

(This is my gaming background... so basically waffle. Skip if ya like.)Hey. Anyone excited for this game? I'm not an RPG gamer at all. Other than Oblivion I've never spent more than 10 hours on an RPG (though I'm almost there with Disgaea on PSP). I've tried multiple times to get through FFVII but just can't even get myself through the first disc. I find them dry, boring and unsatisfying to play. And I dislike turn-based combat and hate random battles.

However I've always been interested in epic stories and that's basically what RPGs have become famous for. Many of them are complex and multi-layered and I find it fascinating. Also the music is many RPGs is fantastic and is usually as epic as the story, and I love epic music. I've tried for years with many different games to get into RPGs but Oblivion (and Disgaea to a certain extent) are the only ones that have managed to keep me interested.

I'm a huge fan of strategy games, not ones like Civilisation on PC or Age of Empires but more like Advance Wars on the GBA and Civ Rev on the consoles. This simplified strategy really appeals to me, they're easy to learn and get into, relatively pick up and play and if you leave it for a while, it isn't difficult to get back into.

Enter Valkyria Chronicles.

Pretty much everything about this game appeals to me. It is a Strategy RPG but not in the usual sense. Most games in the genre consist of a grid based battle system in which you move from square to square in 4 directions and attack when within range of an enemy. They are usually deep and long, with lots of grinding possible but they are kept interesting by the fact that they are challenging and require a relatively large amount of thought compared to just picking an attack or restorative item as in a regular RPG turn-based battle system. And while I find the normal SRPG system good and satisfying, what Valkyria Chronicles is doing is so much more interesting.

Valkyria Chronicles changed the regular system up by allowing full real-time control of your characters in a fully 3D environment. You begin a battle on a map screen (which is very attractive and intuitive), and must spend action points (represented by gold badges) in order to activate a certain unit (represented by blue circles with different symbols to represent different types of units). Then with no loading, the camera zooms in on the position and transitions to an over the shoulder view of the unit. Now you can control the unit as in a normal third person game (you can vault over cover, go into a prone position and crawl etc.). The strategy comes into play with the action bar at the bottom of the screen among other things. This bar drains as you run limiting the distance you can cover. Obviously leaving your character standing out in the open after the bar drains will be begging the enemy to annihilate you but killing an enemy and than lying down behind cover will increase your chances of survival considerably.

There seem to be other strategy elements as well such as limiting the number of actions and attacks you can perform with one action point. Some units such as tanks many require multiple badges to activate so strategy comes into that as well. However there is nothing stopping you from spending another action point in order to use the same unit again, to attack or just to move the unit from a vulnerable position. This is another genre breaking element as every other SRPG I've played limits you to one movement and one action per character in any one turn.

Then after all your action points are used it's the enemies' turn.

The game uses a watercolour type visual design that looks absolutely beautiful. Youtube videos really don't do it justice, there are links at the bottom to better quality videos. The cut-scenes in Final Fantasy Tactics on the PSP is the closest thing to it, though Valkyria Chronicles uses it in the actual gameplay as well as the cut-scenes

This game seems to combine many elements from different genres to create a game that should be something fresh and exciting for RPG fanatics and maybe even introduce a gaming community which consists of many shooter fans to a slower more thought provoking experience to what they are used to. That's probably wishful thinking but hey, that's life.

I'll be updating this with pictures and more info and links as time goes on. I'm really interested in the game and it is definitely one that needs more time in the public eye.

Its appealing to me too. I heard there was going to be a PSN release, but I'm probably wrong. Gotta go but i'll discuss later

Hate to resurrect this thread but I'm really interested in this game and more people need to see it. Anyone who is into shooters, RPGs and especially SRPGs could potentially be very interested in this game. Also it has had very little hype and there isn't all that much talk about it. 2008-09-20 13:08:00

Thanks . Thought the thread deserved another look. I'm not a huge RPG fan but I like SRPGs and this seems to be a really fresh and unique take on the genre.2008-09-20 13:25:00
