Media Molecules Next Level Pack (Spotlighted)

Archive: 74 posts

Hi Guys and Gals. I've just released a new level called "Media Molecules Next Level Pack" and if you get a chance it would be great if you could check it out. This is more a showcase/movie style level. The idea behind it is that you can choose any of the 39 Media Molecule Staff to appear in the mini movie and see them dreaming about the new level pack their going oto make. The only pics I could post are ones that were taken in the editor so has none of the lighting effects and has all the switches/emitter/wires etc. that you normally wouldn't see. It looks a lot better ingame. Hope you guys like it.

Spectacularity at its best! I love this level, it was like that level where it moves you without you using the controller. Very cinematic and mouth-watering awesome. I do hope that MM does any of these level packs in the same quality or better, again, you have simply amazed me!

Pros:

-Awesome cinematics
-Felt like a movie
-Everything looked really well done!

Cons:
-If only all of them were levels :C

5 Star'd and hearted, tagged 'Brilliant'

One suggestion, you could place a speech bubble at the start saying to put down the controller, (do not press O) because it kinda ruins the immersion. That is all!

Hi Wex, I'll be sure to check this out. It looks great from the pics already and you have a serious amount of wires in there which must have taken ages to put in place.

I love the look of your pirate too. how did you make him look so good ? I'm hopeless with character design and faces in particular.

I found this level in the new levels section just randomly (suprisingly i found it here to)
So i've just gotta say:

AMAZING!

Everybody should try this lvl you wont regret it,
All the scene were done with top notch professionalism and i love the way it all goes through like a movie!

I still havent got a clue how people do these type of lvls but this guy does it the best.
I espicially liked the way it cut from one scene to another without any blurryness or blankspots. I am dumbfounded on how this was done!

Best movie lvl i've ever watched!

Oh yeah but as the obove person said the message about put down the controller might be cool i was pressing 'O' a few times befvore i realised.

Your right. I'll sort this out tonight.

There are literally HUNDREDS of switches/emitters etc. in this level. Just to give you some idea of the scope, The level starts off where you can choose one of 39 different people which meant I had to set up 39 grab switches hooked up to 39 emitters emitting 39 unique objects, and thats just the very begining without going into the actual showcase part of the level

Thanks, to give you a basic rundown, I have a small block with a key attached to a piston that once set off travels all the way down triggering all the various events. The trick to getting it seemless is getting the timing perfect which means a LOT of playtesting

This is mean. For those of us (probably just me, thinking about it) browsing new posts in mobile view, this thread name shows up with no subforum title, there's no F4F, so it looks like a news post. I thought they had actually announced the next level pack and I nearly wet myself with glee. This is disappointing and you should be ashamed!

On a serious note, the pics look fantastic, and I'll certainly check it out when I get home

I played this last night when it was first published, and was more than impressed I must say. Probably the best movie style, play's itself level I've seen.

I loved the whole dream sequence idea followed by many different and cool level ideas, all very well built, timed and brimming with details. What made the level for me though, and made me laugh out loud waking the house up, was your cheeky face appearing at the window when your chosen Molecule asks who could build such levels, brilliant.

A wothy job application definetly

Hi wex! I've kind of told you this already, but...

Played this last night. It was literally breathtaking. I felt that feeling of wonder that you get when you see something amazing. You're a master of the 'money shot' intro, but this one surpassed even your previous efforts.

The various themed dreams were great. The King Kong reference was sublime, and it's one of the only levels where I could appreciate the need for so many music changes. Wonderful and magical stuff.

PROS
+ Varied themes, backgrounds, music and designs SEAMLESSLY put together.
+ 'Wow factor' visuals
+ The King Kong scene
+ Humour
+ I felt like a child again

CONS
- It ended!

OVERALL

This level showcases a master craftsman at the top of his game, a creativity that us mere mortals can only pray to achieve. It showcases LBP, and makes you forget all the woes of the world, if only for a few minutes. Thank you for making this. You, sir, are a genius.

Rated 5*, tagged with 'Brilliant', hearted once but I played it 4 times (sorry!)

Take care,
MrsSB

HeHe.... Sorry for the attention grabbing title, but its a tough world out there and its hard to get noticed..... Whats a guy to do

Thanks mate, I put countless hours into the small details in this. eg. The feet sticking out of the bed was made by googling "feet", capturing it with ps eye, then used the point editor to draw around it and the each foot has about 10 stickers on it. (yes I'm that sad The whole level is practiaclly made of disolve to keep the thermo down.

Wow this might be the fastest level to Cool Levels ever, its already on page 2! I can't give much feedback since there's something new on the screen at all times but here goes. The Intro was awesome, I loved the 3 doors opening thing. You executed all of the level ideas perfectly, I love how you show Frankenstein and his monster from different angles, King Kong's part is awesome, The robot was AWESOME, The pirate part was one of my favorites I love how you show the cannonballs "flying" and the people getting hit, and the spaceship looked amazing. LOL "Who could build such awesome levels" maybe the guy staring in your window, like everyone said, nice application to Mm . The level was very funny. I gave it 5 stars and hearted you as an author. This might be the best "movie" level ever.2009-06-05 15:35:00

Well... my feedback:

wow.

Thats it. Just "wow". That's literally all I can manage. Your design skills are phenomenal. The fact that you can create the visual styles for such disparate genres all equally well is amazing. Use of materials, lighting, sound stickers and camera angles is just..... wow.

I would agree with the previous poster who said the initial speech bubble could tell the user to lay down the controller, though, but that's it.

5 stars and hearted.

edit - I assume you are going to make all these levels now, yes? I want to play them. Now

Honestly Wex, this is some serious eye candy dude! You make me proud to be a part of this game, this community, and especially this forum. I don't know what you do for a living, but clearly you are in the wrong business if it doesn't have to do with visual arts of some sort. And I say this with full confidence as an artist myself who is surrounded with gifted individuals such as yourself on a daily basis.

Kudos my friend.... KUDOS!

Amazing "level" my friend!!

*The cameo from the Inside the mind of a "H4H"er monster
*The titles
* The R2D2
* The mechanics
* The visuals
*Just the fact that you went into the first steps level and grabbed every Mm sticker and slapped on you sackboy is brilliant!!

Everything was absolutely great!!
Well done, Wex!!

I thought this was great... the intro was awesome, the premise was ingenious... the whole direction style was great (I especially liked the hynpnotic brain "initiate dream sequence"), but what I loved the most was the character design. They were so cartoony and detailed, and bursting with personality. The giant flying alien was so cool, King Kong was awesome, the girly redcoat screaming in terror lol (made me crack up) with the cannon balls flyig along... the frankenstein sequence was probably my favorite part with the brain popping out... mostly because of the multiple perspectives it had on it's characters. Making a detailed character and animating it once is one thing, but rendering it again and restickering for another perspective shows alot of care and commitment.

Good stuff.

I'm going to say something like most of the others here have said... This level was AMAZING!!!!!!!! It's full of creativity, it has great visual styles, it has a King Kong scene, it has weapons transforming into robots, nicely designed pirates, a great frankenstein scene, and I could just go on. It's around everything you could ever want in a LBP level summed up in a awesome "movie". Others have said this but you should put a magic mouth somewhere in your level saying to not press circle whilst watching the "movie".

I gave this five stars and a heart! Brilliant work!

Wow, what an amazing movie style level. I love the different visual styles in this. It would be a lot better is Mm provided a camera tool, so you don't always have those empty speech bubbles in the way. My favourite part had to be the Frankenstein part, monster pack for the win!

5 stars and hearted!

Hey wex! Great job on this one. I cannot stop playing this level, I find myself forgetting this is done in LBP and thinking I am watching a movie.

The best bit is the horror part, that is very well done, when you are looking down on Frankenstein as if he is below you.

I think this may be better than Johnee's trailer level, or at least it's the same. I'm hoping we see film type levels like this one in the future, maybe Mm can release a new sort of camera tool so we can do things like this without having to use magic mouths, pistons and stuff.

Awesome level, five stars and a heart.

STOP IT!!! WAY TOO GOOD ALERT!

No.. seriously this is really really awesome. I especially loved the King Kong section, but all were amazing and fun. I loved all the characters. Best fun I have had on the game without the controller. ..that is after the really cool MM host selector thingy where you have to actually do something. Watched it a few times while eating lunch. Best movie / video I have seen on LBP.

Sacktacular!

Really wonderful level! Amazing cinematic qualities and you have an amazing range as a designer! Just loved it.

I really wanted to do a Frankenstein level when I heard the monster pack was out but alas have had zero time to even sketch it out. I'm almost glad I didn't as it would pale in comparison to your brilliant interpretation.

The King Kong and airplanes are awesome!

Also laughed a lot at your aliens - really amusing and cool.

5 stars - 'cuz that's all MM will let me give you (It would be many, many more if I could) and hearted! Thanks again for blowing my mind!

I needn?t add much to the heaps of praise that have already been lavished out here but I?ll try to throw my two bits into the ring.

You?ve done a beautiful job here and I can?t imagine the countless hours you must have spent tweaking the timing alone. Yes the creation of each object is top notch and the concept is fresh and the experience is amazing but I also wanted to talk about the cinematography.

This level does raise beyond the LBP limits and plays through as a film and the timing of the cuts, the various angles and pace of the scenes is all very well done. You?ve overcome a lot of obstacles of showing multiple perspectives in 2.5D space and the editing of the scenes is skillfully done. You show a good understanding of natural and forced perspective.

Did you storyboard the level or just come up the segments you wanted and then played it by ear?

When I played this level I was with another person and found that it seems we were able to select two different faces from the selection screen. While the various developer cut-scenes were playing we got a bit of each face showing through so at least it didn?t break anything.

It speaks highly of your creation that people are able to judge the work itself and the presentation of the work rather than judging the components and building materials of the work. I?m sure that you?ll get a lot of positive recognition for this and other levels of yours. Great work.

Wex man, you just blew me away.
I don't really every play levels to be honest. But I thought why not and saw your level straight away on the cool pages.

I'm sooooo glad I tried it as it was by far the best experience I've had with LBP so far. I'm really taken back by this and loved every millisecond of it.
To be honest I hated seeing the title every time on here as I'm that stupid that every time I saw it I thought it was some news (I'm a bit dense lol)

You my friend have earned yourself a big fat crown.

I'm proud to say I know the man that made this wonderful level :hero:
After playing it I just had to come straight on here and shout praises at you. Your one talented person.

Another one it's taken me ages to finally get to. Most of what I could say has already been said, but here goes...

An awsome cinematic level here. All the cuts between scenes are seemless and I'm still scratching my head as to how it was managed. The attention to detail was through the roof good and the humor, (in text and image) was much appreciated. The true proof of this level is that I really do hope MM comes out with some of that content!

I'll admit that I first stumbled accross this level as I was logging out of LBP one night and happened to glimpse (just before the machine shut down) a msg that one of my friends just completed "Media Molecules Next Level Pack". Well I snapped my PS3 back on and headed straight for the on-line store and searched for the new DLC... doh! I can be such a fool sometimes!

Cheers!

Wow... This is just amazing, The character design is... dare I say it? Flawless, you made everything look so real, I seriously completely forgot I was playing LBP.

My bro comes in the room and goes "Who made these Media Molecule?" I told him yeah, just to see what he would say after the level. His response towards the end "Wow, I might even by myself a PS3 if they make level packs like that!"

And I'm being honest, that was really amazing.

My favorite part has to be the guy on the pirate ship cowering as the bombs come toward him. Totally made me lol.

Btw, was that you at the end?

:star::star::star::star::star: and a Heart from me. Amazing job!

If you are looking to work for MM, I really hope your wish comes true man, you deserve it.

Hey there Wex, a bit of a necro here, but well... got news for ya, your level has a bug in it!

Yep, i just found a smallish bug in this top notch level.
Not THAT bad, but i still thought i should report it.

If you grab on top of a person's picture, but don't fall into the hole, and grab the top of the pictures of other people, when you play it, the faces of all of the people will show tho at once all glitchy. (Kinda like when you emmit various things in the same place.) so it shows more than a face at once.
I just did this with a few of the faces, but i'm gonna see what happens when you oppen most, or all the spots. :kz:

Well, just though i should tell you about that.

You know i'm actually kinda proud for finding a bug in such high quality level.

Leave it to Silverleon to break a high-quality level.

I always tend to grab Moo's face everytime I play (c'mon, what name is cooler than "Moo"?). The feet are hysterical, imo. How'd you get those? Anywho, just watching these ideas in action are funny and inspirational at the same time. I mean, the Sci-Fi theme probably sparked the creation of the Starcruiser level. The ship in that level closely relates to the one in yours, thus certifying inspiration. Overall, I rate it :star::star::star::star::star: and add tags "Brilliant" and "Innovative". I think I hearted as well, but I'll need to check (brain locking up...)

Moo: Who iz that in my window?!

Actually, being able to grab more than one face sounds fantastic. This sounds more like a feature than a bug to me.

HAHA yeah, thats it!

Truth is I knew about this but couldn't really come up with a fix for it. For it to work they need to be emitted into the same space so couldn't really find a workaround.

I think it kind of looks funny with a load of them in the bed together

"Replay value" comes to mind. I'm gonna play this level 10 more times when I get home! It sounds like the "Mr. Potatoe Head" of levels.
