STAR WARS: The Empire Strikes Back: Dagobah...err...Etc!

Archive: 70 posts

Hey Guys & Gals,

Finished my newie, and really looking for some general feedback before I publish proper. Its the 5th level in the series, taking place on slimy Dagobah. I don't want to give too much away here or in the pics, it's nicer to be surprised i think!

A word of caution, its much more a narrative driven level than the last few, not a paintenator in sight. There's a fair bit of text, which is one of my concerns, so any thoughts on that aspect would be great.

I'll publish early next week, so the version thats up now is purely to catch any bugs (literally in this case!), get some feedback and tweak accordingly....hope you enjoy!

I'd love to play... is it on craftEarth now or would I need some sort of Key? I wouldn't worry to much about plays... I mean it's not too risky setting something in the Star Wars realm.. and it is the 5th in a series of extremely adorable and funny levels... i'd say your audience and ratings is somewhat built in at this point, already bought a ticket, and waiting on line for you to open the door.2009-06-04 16:08:00

No key needed Gravel, I've just put it out there for a couple of days to see how people get on with it, so i can tweak any bits that need it.

Yeh, the SW levels have gotten a really nice reaction, it's great to know there are a few people out there looking forward to the new one when it comes. Thanks for the appreciation!

From what I`ve played so far it`s the best yet. Will hopefully get stuck into it tonight to see what`s been added. And to find all the stuff that you missed! 2009-06-04 16:19:00

And i can bet you'll find them too. Its another big one, always a headache where holes and missed triggers are concerned. I'm expecting you to point out AT LEAST 10 bad design decisions Matt. ; )

Oh you've outdone yourself... (reality however came crashing in on my LBP reality) will have to finish later... I'm playing once for me... then i'll (how you say) play with everythiiiing. I'll pm you any notes. Would you be insulted by an artistic suggestion or should I keep it simply to play mechanics? Oh, and thanks for the opportunity... You're take on Luke's first encounter w/Yoda is CLASSIC!2009-06-04 16:39:00

Haha, no, I'm very unlikely to get insulted! Thats what a playtest is for. (laugh) You spend so long on something by yourself and become oblivious to anything any new player is likely to notice straight away.

Any thoughts, artistic or otherwise are more than welcome : )

Not quite 10.

- That insect that promises not to sting you is a bit dodgy. Twice I jumped on it, only for it to start moving before I was on it and fall off. I`d stick it on a grab switch.
- In the tunnel, at the part where you pull the twig to lower the electric branch, if you hold onto the bugs when they drop, you fall down with them out of the level.
- I missed one of the collectible bugs at the Yoda section and spent a while trying to get past that branch. Maybe stick a magic mouth telling folk that they`ve still got more to get. I thought that the rest were beyond that branch.
- The R1 bouncy things can be a right pain at times. There`s one where you have to grab on to a swinging sponge which is particularly temperamental.
- Vader`s head doesn`t fall off!

It`s great though.

I found a glitch...

In the second training level, I grabbed the 2nd tree trunk thing for too long and it broke, so I couldn't advance

@Matt

Only 5?? I feel short changed! ; )

K'. I've tweaked the mosquito, its still not a grab mechanism for various reasons, but tis not as quick to scoot off without you. EDIT - played around and its now a grab switch. (laugh)

The falling out of the level is a bit of a mystery, every time i do it i fall into gas....will check for err, gas holes. I've double gassed it, as a extra precaution.

Good idea about the mouth on the exit, will do.

No it doesn't fall off. (laugh).

@ZipCity - thanks zip, I'll sort that now.

Cheers guys!

I played this last night... this is definately my favorite one so far. You scared me a bit with the "text heavy" warnings, but in context of the level there definately wasn't too much text, and the platforming was satisfying enough that even ones that don't care for text shouldn't have an issue.

Fantastic visual style - very detailed and perfect. Visually this is also the best one so far.

Probably after fixing Matt's issues there wasn't much to find - I didn't have a single issue or suggestion all the way through gameplay wise.

My ONE con echoes something Matt said.... it would absolutely be PRICELESS if Vaders head quickly tumbled off after showing that big smile. If it was done in a cute way I think that would be a defining moment players would remember. Just throwing it out there because I kind of expected it .

Vader's head...i tried playing around after Matt suggested it and haven't got it to work quite right yet, i'll persevere.... : )

Gravel also PM'ed me a few thoughts and suggestions, all have been taken on board and most implemented ( thanks Grav!). Thanks for the feedback Cubbage, thats great!

I take the level down, I think any problems have been caught so i'll tweak those and re-publish in the next few days. Thanks so much guys. : )

Humor me and try this (I tried it this morning just to see if it would work well and it was an interesting effect. It's just a thought):

Put a small thin layer piece of dark matter to the right and near the feet of vader (not hugging vader, bit give it a bit of room to the right)

Disconnect vaders head so it just sits there.

Attach the top of vader's head to the dark matter with a winch. Set the max amount to what is necessary so the head doesn't move, and set the min amount a a bit less. Set the timing to about a full second.

Attach a sensor switch directional to the wench so that when you walk near vader the head falls off.

Select the dark matter and shrink it down until it disappears.

You may have already thought of this (obviously you're a great creator), but I played with it this morning and it seemed to act properly.

I've been so wrapped up with creating a new level the past few days that I forgot to check this out!! I was looking for this a bit ago and didn't find it.

Darn!! Looks like I missed the preview. Oh well.. I will patiently wait for the official publishing.

(5 mins pass)
Is it done yet?

(7 minutes later)
Oh... uhh. and is it done yet??

(12 minutes later)
..need something to drink? Cruncy snack? Pillow? Comfy cushion?

...uhh.. ready to publish yet?

I really am being patient!!! ..sorta..

Haha, no worries jww, I'll send you a key - any glitches or probs can you post 'em...?

@ Cubbage & Matt - boys, we now have rolly head ; ) i ended up going the emitter route this morning, its the only way i can think of to still get the two faces AND have it roll off with new face after its appeared... I could have it roll off before the new face but you don't really see whats going on, so this a fair compromise. Thanks for both suggesting it, it's a bit more of a moment now hopefully. Although no doubt someone will get squished by a Vader head next week. lol.

Thanks guys, happy you enjoyed it! hopefully you didn't play the version i accidentally published two hours ago with some lovely bits of dark matter and a big hole cut out of the level (laugh). doh. there are still people playing it even though it's been locked. I don't know how thats happening. Can you play a level you've played already if it gets republished with a lock on? Does playing it unlocked give you access when its been re-locked..?

WOW!!!!

Amazing stuff this is. I think it is your best yet. I will go into more details once you publish for the world to insure you have it mostly complete, but suffice it to say simply stunning!

I think I was playing that version, but got your note and exited. Although I HAAAAD gotten past those steps of patience!!

Only thing I found on the 2nd time I didn't on the first. The log with the portal that falls, the fish message came right as I jumped at the end of the log, absorbed my jump, and wasted a delicate sack life. Probably just me and my big fat thumb, but only thing I could think of offhand.

Thanks so much for doing these!!

Is there a bug with the flipper platforms.? At the part with the 3 at an angle to each other, I kept falling through the 3rd one and having to pop as I was stuck inside it. Happened 4 times in a row.2009-06-10 18:55:00

I just checked Matt, bounced around on that bit nonstop for about 5 minutes and I can't find the problem....dunno matey, hopefully its just a random bit of bad luck...

I really liked the tweaks you did to this. Amazing for sure. I found it a bit challenging especially with those pillars of patience. Though more than worth it to get to the end. I actually got chills during that scene and I knew what was gonna happen next!!

Congrats!

To Matt's point. I didn't have a problem with the flippers. I did have an issue with the escorting the larvae back home to Mummy. I seemed to have squished it's little head and had to start over as I imagine the key was planted there. ..though I didn't think until now to check back to see if a replacement was available. Oh well.. still a great level. The humor was fantastic and such a fascinating world you created.

Easily 5+ stars and hearted.

I almost made the larvae baby HAVE to be squished to open the door, i thought it would be funny, but the animal (insect?) lover in me decided against it. Thanks for the heart J. : )

Hey Julesyjules, returning the favour for leaving feedback on my Mars Attacks level. Although I'd have played this anyway, I love the series

+ Wow, loved the X-Wing
+ Definetly looks like Dagobah.
+ Liked how you use the swamp creature as a platforming device lol!
+ Very cool looking webs and the spider looked awesome to
+ I liked Yoda popping up from the behind the trees
+ Hilarious dialogue from Yoda, "a jedi craves not these things"!!!!!!
+ Liked the trial sections, the jump pads over the swamp in particular.
+ The dialogue gets funnier "Are you kid that blow up the Death Star" and " Slip and drown I'm starving"!!!
+ Nice wisdom trial, I snapped the baby clean in half lol! But the puzzle still worked
+ I liked how you used the animals as platforming, they're all custom (enemies to) and look great
+ The Vader part at the end was awesome
+ Excellent dialogue at the end again
+ Very nice scoreboard

I could'nt find any problems with the level what so ever. It looked great, played really well and once again your dialogue is extremely funny from start to finish. I love this series and can't wait for more.

*****, hearted and hilarious

@ Jaeyden & Grant

Thanks for the lovely comments guys, really glad you enjoy them! That baby larvae has gone really gone through the wars, bless 'im. (laugh). I've tweaked that area today, just to save him having his head pulled off yet again. I'm hoping for an uploaded pic of the balanced stones and the baby head balanced gruesomely on top at some point. At the moment there's one with him skewered upside down onto a sharp branch. Its practically become a mini-game.

Are the wee spider things emitted? I got caught by one of them. After re-spawning I ran over to exact my revenge, only for it to vanish into thin air just as my sack feet left the ground. I definitely didn`t hit it. No points, no contact. Just no spider.

Why do I find bugs (ho ho) that only exist in my version of your levels??

Cheers for that Cubbage! i think it plays out pretty well now, I got you & Matt to thank for that!

Matt, yep, its emitted, so it probably did just run out before you could squish it. Have upped the lifetime now.

My favourite comment so far is 'this was very good, you should do more like it'.

I don't know if that means he hasn't seen any of the others or that he just thinks the rest are terrible. (laugh)

Hey you, I broke the thingy right after hanging from the thingies in the cave thingy.

Right after balancing the rocks and escaping that area, I hang from some spiders? in a cave - when I dropped down, I grabbed hold of something and it snapped, and I couldn't progress

I'll try again sometime so I can finish and provide more inputs, but just making you aware that that whatever is breakable.

The tree springs were great fun, especially the ending angled ones. Wheeee!

Like all your other Star Wars levels, this one's visuals are just perfect. And Yoda commenting on *ahem* shady practices... priceless. Totally worth playing again just to listen to him

I too managed to break it where Louis broke it. Also, in the part before with the caterpillar, if you grab the momma one and pull it to the baby one - I had some bad glare and couldn't see well - you can actually go behind the passageway to the baby one and get outside the intended area. When you hold the momma, it makes you hover in the back plane I think. I don't know. I took a picture of your logic, but I'm probably going to be too lazy to post it here. It was fun until I broke it and couldn't go any further. The electric tree went down, but nothing happened...2009-06-13 18:20:00

Oh, you took the momma instead..? (laugh) I can stick her down as a precaution but she does say to bring her the baby so if you wanna take her on a little tour outside the level thats fine with me.

If the electric root goes down, which you say it did, then you can grab another bug and cruise on down to the next section...

Thanks for letting me know all this, did the bugs stop rolling past at the electric root bit...?

EDIT - Oops, missed your feedback there Loius!

The 'thingy' is supposed to be a tree root. obviously didn't get that one across! (laugh) Its on a bit of elastic and i've gone in and tested it and like Matts problem ,i just can't find a way to replicate it. It just doesn't snap off no matter which way I push and pull it. I've tweaked it to try and make sure it can't happen anyway. Its frustrating knowing there are these possible breakages that I just can't make happen when i test. Well thanks for having a bash anyway (and glad you liked the stuff that actually worked ; ) ), sorry to you & compherc for playing it, only to have it bust out on you right near the end.

I actually landed right on it from the spider, so I had a ton of momentum going. I think it rotated counter-clockwise and wedged itself inside something.

Yeah, the tree went down - I managed to pull the root thingy, and when it snapped back, it went over the hole it came out from and broke. Also, the bugs kept dissolving before they got to the middle platform there. Don't worry, though. I will play through again, as it was wicked fun. It was not my intention to break your level, but I succeeded nonethless. Very cute level overall, and just the right mix of challenging and do-able.

Edit: I just went back and finished it. I see you fixed the caterpillar already Loved your level. 5 stars and a heart (and also some motivation to play the rest of the series).

It had the looks, the gameplay, the design, the characters & the humor. Just brilliant!

It's a level with a great variety of gameplay. Much challenges and every single one was so different. It had a set of a few enemies, which is always nice . The length was just perfect.
Everything looked great. From the level to the characters, especially Joda.
The dialog is fantastic. It has a lot of humor & LBP. My favorite is ending line from Joda. So so awesome...
It's a level that combines fun, humor, Star Wars & LBP all in one. How can you not love it?

Lets sum it all up...

Pros:
- everything

Cons:
- no boss?

6 stars, 2 hearts & brilliant

Julesyjules, I feel like I owe you an apology. I've seen your name passed around this forum many times being labelled as one of the best creators on here and not once have I thought to check out your levels.

I've just played this level and it is beautiful. The atmosphere is incredibile, the gameplay is simple but at the same time executed well. The use of planes is excellent, most of the time we class good plane use as it just not being frustrating, however here you actually used them to your advantage and created some excellent platforming in the process.

One of the big ones for me is the story, you should have no worries whatsoever about there being too many text bubbles. I am one of the biggest haters of text bubbles (if you notice in my levels I have no story, and only have 1 text bubbles across all three levels. I usually try to get any messages across in picture form on the walls). Yet our story is excellent, it is amusing, charming, and not at one stage did it become tedious.

This is the definition of a 5 star level.

I will definitely be checking out all your others.

After the somewhat disappointing Empire Strikes Back: Chapter 1 (although not bad by any means), you've returned with Dagobah, my favourite of the series .I'm playing through a few series at the moment (Gruntos' From Siberia With Love, LittleBig Contra etc.) which are all great, but you're Star Wars series really drew me in.

The platforming, puzzles etc. are top-notch, but where these levels really shine is the humour. You've taken a charming story, added your own little twist to it and in doing so, created perhaps the funniest levels on LittleBigPlanet. Many levels make me smile, but few make can make me laugh like these do.

Keep 'em coming!

Glad you enjoyed it guys!

@jack - Glad you got round to playing it, and thanks for the great feedback. I think my plane use is actually pretty tardy compared to alot of creators here, i have to force myself to think in more than one layer, as it just doesn't lay itself out in my head that way. I always play Grants levels with envy and awe because he's just too good at utilising the layers. Anyway, thanks for the big-up!

@EVOin - Pleased you get a chuckle!! Thanks : )

Just a note on use of planes - I thought the use of planes was utilitzed incredibly well in this level, just in a different way than the Siberia series - especially in the rock-stacking part. I found it kind of cool trying to figure out what branches were on what plane. Also, the part where you enter Yoda's hut was a great little illusion with the planes.

Absolutely amazing! Without a doubt this is your best! The level just oozes atmosphere and the visuals are stunning. Vader at the end, in the shadows, made my jaw drop. The level is also extremely funny and I laughed out loud a bunch of times.

Awesome, absolutely awesome! Great job!

Unless somebody else knows. I kind of expected someone to, considering the fact that no one else has asked that question yet.

Am I the only one that was amazed and befuddled by how realistic his rain looked?

Indeed not... I too was totally blown away by that effect. Can't wait to hear the answer.

Awesome as all your levels are. This level is out of all your Star Wars levels very good indeed - great humour throughout - Really love how you tie it all in to LBP

Solid throughout and great atmosphere - I enjoyed every bit of it - even when I couldn't find the baby larvae! Excellent X-wing model!

#Did find it quite dark... More my LCD than anything else I feel

Excellent X-wing model!

Someone else makes the vehicles. He`s credited in the level description in-game. Guy makes some awesome stuff.

The best SW level ever made

Hilarious dialouge! I loved the part when yoda says, "You seek easy hearts and quick trophies. A jedi craves not these things!" lol. I also loved the force part at the end. Great ending! "The force flows through all things, the pistons, the sponges, yes, even the wobble bolts." Hysterical! And my favorte part was probably when vader's head fell off to reveal a sack head! I couldn' stop laughing!

Fantastic gameplay. All the puzzles, platforming, and objectives were genius! And the thing that amazes me most is that it didn't interfere with the mood at all. It all blended in perfectly, the materials, storlyline, puzzles, everything. I think the creators of Star Wars would be proud hehe.

Epic mood. The scenery was great, even in the grimy swamps of Dagobah. The lighting was phenomenal, the trees were crafed perfectly, and the rain was spectacular. All the effects played out perfectly. The water, the glowing gases, and like I said, the rain, was all genius. The choices of material like the brown sponge and rotting wood made me feel like I was in Dagobah from the very start.

All in all, the gameplay was a little confusing, but I never found glitches or messed up and had to restart. For such an epic level, you actually did a great job of making it practically glitch-free! And no matter how many flaws people might find in it, the wonders of the level itself far outweigh them. A 5 star level with a big fat heart.

This is a great level! Really nice atmosphere and Yoda is a riot. The training, the jumping in particular was lots of fun. The scorpions and spider webs looked great. Had much fun I did!2009-07-09 02:05:00

Its pretty simple actually, just a batch of glass shards on a single thin layer, shrunk down to the smallest visible size, captured and then emitted by three emitters moving horizontally (and independently of each other to make it look a little more random).... hope that helps!

awesome... That makes sense about the rain. It's definitely the most realistic rain I've seen by far. I'm surprised it didn't kill your thermo.2009-07-22 22:32:00
