PS3 dead - what happens to LBP profile?

Archive: 16 posts

I was playing LBP when it froze, meaning I had to do a hard reset. When I turned the console back on it was dead. Although the PS3's main menus were still accessible, it wouldn't recognise any disc. There were no whirring motor or fan sounds to indicate that it was even attempting to read discs. So, it's fried inside right? Right. Well, now I realise just how addicted to LBP I've become. I spent last evening just wandering aimlessly around the house, looking for an activity that might spark my interest, but couldn't find anything that gave me the fix I was looking for. TV seemed like trash, books seemed too dull, and my guitar playing sounded awful. I even got my PS2 out and started playing a few games which I had bought but never tried out, MGS3, Silent Hill 4, POP:Two Thrones. However, I turned each one off after a few minutes of play time because none of these supposedly "top titles" seemed worthy enough to lick the boots of LBP. In fact, I think LBP might have killed gaming for me, since I'm no longer satisfied just to play...I need to create! I'm even thinking of admitting myself to rehab because the withdrawal symtoms are too much to cope with right now!

Anyway, I didn't create this thread only to lament the passing of my PS3. My question is this...once I buy a new PS3, where do I stand with LBP? I've made a back up copy of my save on a USB stick, but what happens to my user name, player profile and DLC which I paid for? Will it all be there on the back up save, or could there be problems with the fact I'm trying to register an existing user name on a new console?

Your on-line profile is safe. Simply log in with your old username and password. The DLC you purchased is tied to your login so you'll be able to download it again without paying for another copy.
Your trophies will also be safe since they are kept on the PSN database.

Pray tell, don't you have an active warranty on your PS3 though? I'm sure you are entitled to get a replacement if you didn't mess with the console.

I had this very same problem not long ago. It sounds like your blueray drive has finally kicked the bucket. You didn't say if your Ps3 was still under warranty or not. So if you are going to call tech support, make sure you back up all the data you can. The first thing they're going to do is to get you to format the hard drive to make sure it's not corrupted. Why this is necessary I don't know. You would think that after hearing the symptoms they would know the problem by now.

I had a 40Gb launch version and I was given a refurbished console at no charge as a replacement.

So remember, BACK UP any game data that's important to you. Luckily you can still do that without the Blueray drive.

Hope this helps.

I'm feeling with you Ungreth.

I had the same problem in December. GTA IV froze, and I couldn't do anything except turn off the PS3 with the power switch. Booted the PS3 again, and the blueray-laser was fried.

The sad thing with my case is that I didn't think of backing up the data, since I was told that the PS3 would be repaired. I took out the HD as backup (read in the manual that you could do it), but received a new PS3. Still no problem I thought, until I found out that the HD is encrypted.

About DLC, I think you can download it up to 5 times before you must pay for it again...

^ Thanks all. Reading Morrinn3's post reminded me that I actually took out an extended warranty when I bought the PS3, so I've just phoned the support line and a courier will be coming to collect the console for repair tomorrow. Phew! Hopefully they'll return it with all my data intact, and not take too long about it either!

Now...anyone got any suggestions as to how an LBP addict can find alternative amusement in life?

Take backup of all your save-games just in case...

You can make plans for your next level in the meanwhile

High five man, at least you don't have to shell out for another console, so that's cool.
Now, I'm not sure how it is where you live, but as things are over here, with a replacement PS3 aught to come a fresh warranty. Make sure you ask the guys at Sony about this because they sure as hell wont bother mentioning it unless prompted.

As for killing time while you wait for a fresh PS3, there's been some hype about the upcoming Ico game, so in case you haven't had the chance to play the old games I suggest you try out Shadow of the Colossus on the PS2. See how you like it.

From the day the PS3 was released, I am STILL wondering why people do a hard reset when their console freezes.
just hold the front button for a few seconds, I did it like hundreds of times and my PS3 has yet to die.

SO WHEN YOUR PS3 FREEZES, DO NOT USE THE POWER OFF BUTTON ON THE BACK.

When it happened to me, I had tried everything. So it was the last thing I could do... I even waited around one hour, just to see if I could avoid it.

Yeah, it was just that time nothing else worked. Normally (not that it happens often) the front switch works. If it don't, take out the disk and do a hard reset.2009-06-03 14:55:00

DO NOT BET ON YOUR DATA BEING INTACT!

Chances are they will not repair your console just replace it. Back it up!

The laser on my first PS3 fried, so I backed up my LBP save data to USB. When I restored it to my new refurbished PS3, it had to download all of the LBP patches again (as game data is encrypted) but the save worked. Trophy support will be disabled, however.

I also suggest you de-activate your broken PS3 from PSN. You should be able to do this from account management system activation.

If it's not to late, try using the backup-feature as described here:
http://manuals.playstation.net/document/en/ps3/2_60/settings/backuputility.html

Some people say that you don't looses "trophy-progress" that way, i.e. you can continue on the backed up save and still get trophies. I can't confirm this, since I've not tried it.

Also be sure to sync up the trophy-progress...

^ Too late! It's already gone for repair and the only data I backed up to USB memory stick was my various save files.

Fingers crossed!
