Level Name:Mythicos: Realm of Elves
Genre:Action Fantasy

Mythicos: Realm of Elves
Mythicos starts out as all good fairy tales do: In a great 'Mother Tree' with a young man, and the love of his life. But not all is well in the land of Terra... One morning our hero, Leo decides to visit his lover, Rose. When he arrives at her house, her father, the King is waiting. He bears bad news... Monsters from the center of Mother Tree have somehow made their way to the surface, and are running a muck in an elven village. the King strikes a deal with young Leo; if he defeats the monsters, he may take Rose's hand in marriage... And so an adventure begins. An adventure filled with action, combat, many usable items, and a strange man, who some elves believe to be God himself.

Hi, just played your level. It looks and feels almost exactly the same as MindPhaser's Below The Root series, were you aware of his levels?

+Everything looks well
+ Its plays well enough
+ Custom enemies, and I liked the variation on them later also.
+ Nice exploration, although a little to much at times, see below
+ Liked the implementation of the using the items to progress
+ Shop was a great idea, using stickers to buy things.
+ Liked the platforming puzzle after the magic door, nicely done.
+ Nice boss, although a little easy
+ I liked having stickers to get you more bonuses on the second playthrough, I immediatly restarted the level to see what they were.

- You are a bit lost and confused at the start, although you soon learn the layout, perhaps you need some magic mouths to aid the direction a little.
- A double life checkpoint is needed after the platforming section past the shops.
- More checkpoints added in general throughout the level, they were spaced a little far part in my opinion.

Nice level with some good visuals and platforming. I got lost a few times to begin with and things were'nt to clear but I soon learned my way around. I liked the shop and item ideas, they were well implemented. However, I could'nt get MindPhasers levels out of my head whilst I was playing. Great replay value to, by giving you stickers to use second time around.

i know there werent enought magic mouths or checkpoints, as it was copletely full. i purposefully put a 4 life checkpoint in the core of the tree, as this adds difficulty to the more than easy boss fight. and no, ive never heard of the "below the root" series, but im checking it out riiiight now 2009-06-05 03:58:00

Overall, very fun. I got a little annoyed by the camera sometimes (having to push the edge of the frame to move on) but the trees were very well done

I agree with the sentiment about needing a checkpoint somewhere between the core tree and the shop tree though

Good job. Certainly a nice looking level. The bomb sticker prize bubble despawned on me before I could collect it. Either the emitter is set to 1 max or the life time is not set to infinite. Couldn't tell, but I spammed the coin sticker on the bomb guy and the prize bubble just vanished. Might wanna check that out. Overall a great job from what I saw.2009-06-05 05:08:00

I played it last night and it's got a nice fantasy style to it. The design work is good. Very cleanly designed and great attention to shape and color. Nice material choices as well - they all work nicely. I like your tree designs and the branches and winding paths are cool.

I got a kick out of the blue "god" guy. Made me think of Dr. Manhattan from Watchmen going off to start life on another planet. Maybe he created the denizens of the tree? j/k.

The floating platforms in between the branches are nicely done. The second to the last one on the right in the first set you have has a habbit of making the player switch layers automatically though. It's not hard to avoid once you know it's there but it's an unexpected way to fall to the gas if you aren't prepared for it.

Also - since players can turn off the collect items option since the Yarg update I wasn't able to get the stickers to proceed to the bomb or magic area. You may want to put a heads up in the description or in a magic mouth telling players to turn it on or they'll need to restart as I did.

You have a lot of cris-crossing of the same areas, which can be a good thing in a level (GrantosUK's for example) but these areas are sparsely decorated and a little similar so they don't bring any flow or excitement for the player in these transition areas. I'm not sure if there's a way to adjust them as your level is fully finished at this point but you may want to consider adding some eye candy to those areas - stuff that moves or changes maybe.

On the whole it's a good level and definitely worth checking out. I do urge you to play Mindphaser's Below the Root levels as your level will be compared to it by many of the people here who have played his before. Yours is different but you should probably know what people who make the reference are talking about if they mention the other level.

I rated it 4 stars and tagged it cute. Thanks for sharing it.

i did play below the root and am pleased to say that Mythicos: Shattered Dreams will take a DRASTIC turn from all that. Your Dr. Manhattan hypothesis isnt far off... lets just leave it at that. I designed him like the Dr. to provoke feelings of doom in true geeks such as myself who know what Manhattan represents. Look for Mythicos 2 in the next month or so, and Mythicos 3 if #2 is a hit.

Mythicos: Realm of Elves is merely the prologue to the series. Shattered Dreams will be where it starts the action, and sets the story for the rest of the series (planned to be 5 parts) and there maybe 2 spinoffs called "a quick one while he's gone (parts 1 and 2)"
give your feed back on part one so i can make the other 4 parts of this soon to be epic story line much better and more enjoyable!

just a heads up on the double posting - they aren't millitant about it around here but I don't think they like it very much. You can always edit a previous post rather than posting twice in a row. Makes for an easier to read thread too.2009-06-05 07:35:00

I just played part of the way through this, but I actually left the level because the camera angles were so unbelievably annoying. Everytime I run 5 steps or jump or do a thing the camera is pointing at another random corner of the room. A few times I had to push the edge of the screen to move on. None of these angles seemed to enhance the gameplay or draw my attention to anything significant and it completely lacks subtlety. It was just distracting and unnecessary. Sorry, but I just couldn't hack it.

What I did play of the level looks nice and has some really good touches, but the camerawork just pushed me away. I rated the level as 4*, because I don't want to downgrade it when I haven't completed it. If I come back to it I'll be sure to give you more rounded feedback.

I played through this last night and I think that the issue raised by a few others is worth bringing up again.

There are a lot of camera zones in this level that have a very high player tracking value. I think that you went a bit overboard here with a new camera zone for nearly every segment of the level.

I do see from playing the whole Mythicos series that you've come a long way in the use of these zone since this level but things can get pretty bad.

If I'm walking my player along the level but the camera is fixed on a point such that I start getting the player off-screen count-down timer before the camera switch to a regular view I consider this to be fairly bad.

Also as there is a lot of backtracking the constant whipping around of the camera gets a bit off-putting.

I do like your creative use of the LEDs in patterns for decoration on the level.

The character of Knowledge seems to be the most rounded character in the level mostly through the multiple appearances and comments that he makes. The other characters seem to be little more than stand-ins to prop up the storyline.

I noticed that there is a typo in one of the last few Knowledge lines of text where you spelled the name as 'Knoledge'.

I like your use of stickers both to advance the story and also to provide a replability factor. Being able to get different sections of the level through multiple playthroughs adds a layer of depth to the level.

I can see the roots of the later Mythicos levels here though this is the least polished of the series and understandably so. It isn't a bad level and works out as a decent introduction to the storyline even if the characters are not fleshed out very much.

I'll post feedback on your next Mythicos level presently.

Cheers.
