It wasn't all sequels and plugged leaks at Sony's E3 press conference. Sony also announced a new PlayStation 3 franchise called ModNation Racers, the latest in the company's Play.Create.Share lineup popularized by LittleBigPlanet. The game looks to strap LBP's overcute style and love of physics into kart racing that, according to Sony, will let players express themselves and become "superstar designers" by sharing tracks, karts and characters over the PlayStation Network.

basically, a mix of mario kart with LBP on wheels.
day one purchase!

Terrible name. Good looking editor though, seemingly very quick to use. I may buy it - we'll have to wait and see.2009-06-02 21:40:00

The name is awful.

It looks fun to play, but it's really just Crash Team Racing with a track editor.

Seems to be alot more limited than LBP in matter of creativity BUT --- having a next-gen Mario Kart with an editor still is awesome.

Am i the only one that doesn't think the name is that bad
It's not the best name but i wouldn't say it was terrible

And remember they did say there would be a lot more features for the track editor.
Hopefully we'll be able to make moving platforms and switches or model our own buildings/scenery.
Otherwise once you've seen the first few custom tracks you've pretty much seen all of them

The create mode looked like a lot of fun. Changing the landscape, adding hills, water, moving the sun around. Definitely a a bit of Playing-God satisfaction to be had in just screwing around with that editor.2009-06-02 23:25:00

It looks more limited in creative capabilities than LBP (it's more like the Far Cry 2 level editor), but it still looks cool, and I'll buy it when it's released.2009-06-02 23:30:00

So far, the only way to watch it that I've come across is to watch the entire Sony press conference. I'm sure it will be put up as a standalone video soon, though.

EDIT: I have found a video of the demo, however it doesn't seem to load correctly for me. In any case, here's the link (http://e3.g4tv.com/videos/38760/Sonys-ModNation-Racers-Demo-at-E3-2009/) to the video. Enjoy (if it works).

In ModNation Racers, the players can design their own karts, drivers and tracks with an intuitive, yet amazingly deep set of tools. In fact, the tools are so deep, the developer, United Front Games, is using the tools to build the entire game! We will have a lot more to share on ModNation Racers, so stay tuned.

Taking a step up from LBP apparently, this time they claim to of made the entire game from the tools provided instead of just the levels!

I think this might be a bit of an exaggeration, but i'm excited to see just how deep the tools do get

I'll probably get it because it bears a large resemblance to TrackMania (if you've never played it, download it from Steam. It's free, and awesome) but with better graphics and a more intuitive map editor.

Day one for me. Looks great. Plus, I like the name.

No, they meant "levels". You can't make an entire game with it's own built-in editing tools - how would you make the editing tools?

That is deep, man.

I'm gonna keep my eye on this one, they say it's got physics up the wazoo like LBP so I'm sure we'll have some wild things going on.

well it did say "the entire game" so you can't be sure

and they said they used the tools to create the game, it didn't say anything about making the actual tools

whatever they meant i think there's a lot more to the tools than was shown in that preview

i Saw the video for this yesterday and thought it looked good, but then saw the announcement of Forza Motorsport 3. From my point of view, that will be much more fun fr me personally, hence i won't end up buying this, because they both come out at the end of the year.

think the main (or one of the main) things about this is creating tracks, but personally, i would rather know the track, know it will be good and know what lines to choose. I also would prefer to spend hours not customizing the car + driver (though i can) but instead tuning the car - adjusting camber settings to suit the track and testing - going as fast as i can.

So i guess my point is that i won't be buying it lol.

I thought that a LBP Racer/editor from Media Molecule would have been a logical follow-up to LBP. Looks like someone else beat them to it.2009-06-03 16:59:00

When I saw that I immediately thought it looked very cool but nothing I'd invest time in creating racetracks. I'll probably play it a lot but I'll stick with building levels in LBP.2009-06-03 17:00:00

building your own shooter could be a bit complex
i'd definatly give it a go though xD

i'd rather see a 3D platformer builder before that, like LBP only you can move freely in all directions

What I meant is just the maps, and possibly some weapons. Another extension of the Play,Create,Share mechanic.

sounds cool, any games company can do any play, create, share game now because as sony said, it's turning into a genre that LBP and Mm created!

this games looks awesome. IMO, making levels is better than making platformer levels. but only by the slightest. i love them both.

Nono, I think he meant Doom. It's definitely possible - I could foresee a PCS Shooter in the near future. As for this

the developer, United Front Games, is using the tools to build the entire game

Well LBP is just Mario with three additional planes and a level editor.

Actually, have any of you ever played Time Splitters 2? It had a great level creator. You could even make your own levels and missions. It was pretty cool!

yeah i was thinking about that editor xD

if a game was based around an editor like that though i'd want it to be a lot more flexible

They should re-invent it as Little Big Kart or something.

The create mode certainly looked easy to use, but also a lot more limited than LBP.

I`ll need to see more of what tools they can offer before I make a decision. Right now it just looks like a track editor. We all know that LBP is much more than a Level editor.

I can't say for certain that I'll be buying the game yet. It looks like it'd be a great game at the least, and I LOVE the concept of it. (I've wanted a game where you could create racing tracks pretty much since I got into racing games.) The editor looks like it could be very limited though. It looks like it'd be much easier to use then LBP's editor, but it just seems, limited to me right now. I'll be keeping a very close eye on this game though.2009-06-04 21:16:00

Some new information here (http://www.joystiq.com/2009/06/09/impressions-modnation-racers/). I'll extract the key bits.

They were keen to say that what we were seeing was only the tip of the iceberg in terms of customization options in the full version.

They decided they didn't like the location of an individual tree, so they moved it amongst the others and proceeded to take a single house in their procedurally generated village and scale, rotate and move it however they liked.

So you can manipulate individual objects. Some of you expressed fears that you could only use brushes.

Levels are made using themes. Think of these as related collections of items, tools and features. The theme they showed off at E3 was the countryside theme, but expect many more to be in the full version, each with unique components. The demonstrators insist that the themes are so varied that you'll be able to make "just about anything you imagine."

Once completed, your level can be uploaded to be rated, downloaded and edited by others.

Hopefully this isn't compulsory.

That was it really, they close with:

It's hard to imagine that a kart racer could impress us so much -- notice we say nothing here about how the actual racing part of the game plays, it's very similar to every kart racer you've ever played -- but the level editing and the potential that ModNation Racers gifts the player really excites our creative side. Even despite realizing how many copies of Mario Kart levels we'll be seeing a week after release.

Or, better yet, make another track! ... Since there will probably be a million of those...

Anyway, sounds cool! I just hope it ends up like LBP, flowing all expectations out of the water .

And, of course, we're getting a new site... Oh joy!

We've already got a good template to start from - the one we're using is perfect. I'm just going to re-do all of the images, colors, etc to match the style of ModNation Racers. It will be nearly unrecognizable, but it will look good.

Just thought I'd share this link (http://boardsus.playstation.com/playstation/board/message?board.id=pslounge&thread.id=653666&view=by_date_ascending&page=1) I found on the PS forums. It seems that it will be a Blu-Ray disc based game. Oh and up to 12 players in a race at one time.

This game is going to be awesome. I can't wait to see the other themes that will come shipped with the game. I guess at E3 and other videos have only shown the "Countryside" theme. Imagine a horror theme, or winter theme. I cannot wait for more info on this.
