Level: Last Train from Little Big City 2.0 PSN: jedi_jeff Well, this time around, it would seem that Sackboy is on a treasure hunt. Though, you wouldnt really know that from the title of the level, would you? This level starts you off at a pleasant looking trainstation, rather out in the middle of nowhere. You can tell it's the middle of nowhere because of all the gigantic cactuses in the background. Your first goal is apparantly to deliver some medicine over to the next station (which requires you have the option to grab community objects turned on, for sticker use). Do that, and get on the train, and your journey begins. The train is quite nice looking, by the way. Well made, though the texturing seems a little odd. You can explore the train a bit while it's moving for some extra point bubbles.... which is one aspect I liked about this entire level, is that the use of bubbles/scoring is quite well done. Which, honestly, isnt something that I get to say about many levels that I play. But this one makes very good use of the game's scoring system. About halfway through the train ride, some guy standing next to the tracks tells you that there's "something important" at the top of this water tower that's coming up. Ok, so, go and grab that, preferrably before the train leaves you. Now, it goes on a little further.... there's a cool trainwreck scene, and then you can get to the other station, and make your delivery to gain some bonus points. Walk past the station, and..... wait, what's the Scoreboard doing here? Surely that's not the end of it already? That was really short! But all is not as it seems in this level. There's a little sign near the Scoreboard that talks of a treasure map.... the important thing you found. Paste it onto the sign, and.... whoa, trap door! You drop down into an underground cavern of sorts. It's at this point that the graphics of the level changes a bit oddly. The above-ground section is pretty nice looking, but I thought the cave was strangely bland. Mostly just basic stone and functional stuff. Anyway, this is where the real meat of the level is. You've found the cavern where the treasure is supposedly buried, so it's time for a bit of exploring to see if you cant find it. Now, I dont really wanna spoil anything here, but the cavern is a series of trials.... there's some jumping areas, a couple of puzzles, and a few other surprises in store for you here. Tests of skill and smarts. Nothing overly difficult, and it never has any cheap or unfair moments, but for the most part, not bad. A little bland, but not bad. The jumping bits seemed a little stale to me, but that's just my opinion, and it doesnt detract from the overall level. Fortunately, the way the scoring is handled keeps it interesting, for players that like to try to score high. The only thing I didnt like was the final part of the cavern.... you're given a choice of three doors, one on each plane, each one passing between walls of burning thin material. You cant see what's on each path, and you're told "choose your path wisely". Now, if there was some sort of clues or hints given here, I personally did not notice them. It seems to be just, well, take a guess, hope you got it right. If you choose wrong, you'll get fried. Choose right, and you'll come out the other side just fine, and then you can exit the cavern. You pop out, back to the site of the train wreck, and from there can climb up and run to the scoreboard. If that seems like a short description/discussion of the level, well, it kinda is, but like I'd said up above, I dont wanna spoil the contents of the cavern for anyone.... and the cavern makes up the bulk of the stage. So, now, onto the scoring: Gameplay: 7/10 Great use of score bubbles here, but I found the actual platforming in the level to be strangely bland. Still decent though. The puzzles and traps in the cavern are all pretty neat, though. There's some interesting things in there. Graphics/sound: 6/10 A strange split, here. The above ground section, with the train and the stations and the tracks and everything, looks pretty nice. I thought that part was pretty well done. But then you find the underground cavern, and..... rock, rock, rock, it's all mostly the same rock, everywhere. What happened here? I mean, I know it's a rocky cavern, but still.... it just seemed odd to me. Challenge: 5/10 (lower means easier) The average player might have a couple of deaths at a few points in this stage, but for the most part there's nothing overly dangerous here. And nothing that's either cheap or frustrating.... the challenges that are to be found are pretty well thought out. Shouldnt be any nasty comments from this one, haha. Pacing/Length: 6/10 The length was good and proper, but some parts of the stage seemed a bit slow to me. Things do pick up a bit though, once you reach the first of the trials in the cavern. Fortunately, it stays interesting enough throughout the rest of the stage. Overall: 6/10 Decent level.... I had a good time with this one.... but it does seem to have a couple of odd flaws. Other than that though, the overall design is sound, and the idea is neat. It can be a bit slow moving, but there's some interesting things to see in here. Not spectacular, but it's certainly worth a go. Just be sure to pay attention to the text http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2009-5/1340144/Train1.JPG There's a treasure map to be found! On..... a water tower? Who put that there? Regardless, it's an easy grab, and it's the key you need to reach the real part of your quest. http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2009-5/1340144/Train2.JPG Hmm. Perhaps I should have chosen to help the child instead of just making a mad dash for the little treasure stash. A lesson learned. The hard way. http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2009-5/1340144/Train3.JPG A puzzle that you'll find within the cavern. You're given one hint at first, but if you cant figure it out, you can go get a 2nd hint that'll help alot. But you'll be rewarded if you can do it without getting the 2nd hint. | 2009-06-01 09:47:00 Author: Bridget Posts: 334 |
