Newfound Glitch: Merge/Combine Materials!

Archive: 21 posts

"Recently a glitch was surfaced that allows you to combine multiple materials on the same layer! Credit goes to DrunkenFist_Lee for finding this glitch and mindphaser74 for explaining it. Visit lbpcentral.com/forums, where you can find the thread. For LBPC."

From a mere thread to a fully-fleshed out tutorial/exhibition level with dozens of examples and experiments in a just a few days! I've been working hard to expose this glitch and let the word out. I'm about to start a video on the level. Check it out and tell me what you think!

Combine fire with black horrible gas and you get a fiery material with no flames, just black smoke, so it looks like it's smoldering rather than burning. Pretty neat. I missed the thread where they found this glitch so thanks for sharing.2009-06-01 03:38:00

checked this out earlier today, you did a great job explaining and experimenting with the glitch Only thing i wanted was plazma added to your death ball lol. Use this thread to make plazmified material if you are interested in adding this to your killer concoction there : https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=t=105962009-06-01 08:48:00

Crashdance you ROCK! The level is great, although I don't know how you did the exploding thingy where you had merged objects. How did that produce the confetti look?

I really hope more people see this level IMO it is one of the biggest and coolest glitches (other than invisible material) to come out of the game.

I will try it today and heart and 5-star it.

You really took the bull by the horns with this one crashdance and you deserve most of the credit for fully helping us all out with this technique.
A million thanks. As for MM fixing this glitch, it might require a lot of recoding. I wouldn't expect to see this fixed in a patch any time soon. Eventually, but it is too all-encompassing to provide a quick patch for it IMO.

I believe I've experienced this before. Don't you just get two overlapping materials because of double texturing? It also didn't look right when it happened to me. You could see flickering between the two overlapping textures. I never meant to do that so I just deleted the one that wasn't supposed to be overlapped.2009-06-01 17:37:00

I think if you try the level or watch the video or check out the original thread you will see that there are quite a number of USEFUL things you can accomplish with this technique.

Thanks for the compliments mindphaser! I'm really fascinated by this glitch and suddenly got the drive to make it well-known to others who may find it useful.2009-06-01 23:55:00

Thanks for the compliments mindphaser! I'm really fascinated by this glitch and suddenly got the drive to make it well-known to others who may find it useful.

I'm so busy with my Chapter 3 (almost done!) to have the time to experiment. But I love it too and plan to use some of the techniques for Chapter 4.

And I don't just love it because I explained it first like some might think, it is just a real cool glitch, lets not kid ourselves. Thanks for doing all the leg work for us all here, and thanks to the others who contributed to the crazy combos too.

If anybody wants to see this glitch used in a level, check out my "Ancient Catacombs". I use the glitch quite a bit near the end of the level.

Specifically: There's a crazy creepy organic-looking hill you have to climb. The hill is made of glass, with objects sticking out of it. Also, the back wall there is made of 2 materials. I didn't just use the glitch for the sake of using the glitch. I wanted to make something that looked cool.

This really is a useful technique for making new custom materials & getting some variety in our levels!

Wow, just made exploding material with this, grab-able point bubbles, and grab-able dark matter. Awesome! Very interesting indeed.

Also, if you merge a checkpoint with any material, when sackboy pops out, he flies up a bit! It's rather amusing...

I have fun playing with this. About to merge plasma balls with materials...

Great tutorial level! There's a lot people could do with this.

I actually found this one on accident a few weeks ago working on a music level o' mine. I was never sure exactly what happened or how, but it produced some interesting effects.

I ended up with three identical blocks (same size, not like in the tutorial) of notes all stuck together. The result was kinda ghost-like, in that you could see through it partially (three blocks of solid wood). I tried deleting one of the three stacked notes, and the three blocks exited each other, one staying where it was and the other two going opposite directions at high velocity (across the level in seconds velocity). I ended up knocking over half my music level like a giant game of dominoes .

You might want to play around with sticking things onto these mixed materials - before and after merging. I think you may find some amusing new uses for the glitch.

Whoa! How did you go about making all those things? Looks like I need to experiment more myself. Maybe make some cool stuff then save them in an object.
