I love Tool now.

I never really listened to them until yesterday when my guitar teacher told me to, and they're like the best band ever. You really really really should listen to them.

One of my favorite bands! I had heard one or two songs from them (Sober, Swamp Song) back during Undertow, but it was when AEnima first came out in 96 that I seriously, seriously took notice. a friend put on the CD for me. Track 1: Stinkfist. and from that moment on, it was a match made in heaven.

Danny Carey, the dummer, is a maniac. He's just a god ****ed maniac. Amazing, amazing. They're progressive rock, which I love. A lot of long, dynamic songs. songs that change and shift. They do a lot of poly-rhythmic stuff that can cause you to jerk a little bit if you're nodding your head to the beat - suddenly the time signature will change, and then change, and then change again. Sometimes the drummer plays in a different time signature altogether than the rest of the band.

When they toured for the Lateralus release, I saw them in Texas, so glad to have seen them when I did. Would have loved to check them out during the AEnima tour, but I was a youngster of a teenager and didn't go to concerts yet. Too young to drive.

I saw a really cool video once that pointed out some neat facts about the song Lateralus.

The meter of the vocal melody in that song actually uses Fibonacci's Spiral sequence. Fibonacci's Sequence is very simple: Each number in the sequence is the sum of the two previous numbers. So: 1 1 2 3 5 8 13 etc.
When you graph Fibonacci's sequence, it comes out as a spiral, spiralling outward farther and farther into infinity.

Now listen to Lateralus:
Black (1)
Then (1)
White Are (2)
All I see (3)
In my Infancy (5)
Red and Yellow then came to be (8)
Reaching out to me (5)
Lets me see (3)

And so on. At one point this meter goes up to 13, and then winds back down backwards.
There's a lyric later in the song "Swing on the spiral". Which is, quite literally what the melody of the song's verse does.		2009-06-01 21:43:00

OMG!! I love Tool to death, been listening since their Lateralus album came out. Listen to them through headphones dude, you'll discover a million things that they've used with each playthrough. The meanings of their songs are so deep, the techniques and the time signatures that they use are all of a particular purpose, especially in the song Lateralus which deals a lot with the number phi, which is the ratio at which spirals form which are mentioned a lot in the song. The time signatures relate to the Fibonacci sequence, as well as the syllable count in the lyrics and what time the vocals come in.

Intense!

I actually don't listen to a lot of hard stuff. I used to. There was a time for me that I listened to the likes of Korn, Deftones, Sevendust, hell even Limp Bizkit when their first album came out. All of these bands mellowed out over the years. So did I, and I stopped listening to all those bands and moved on to other stuff, except Tool - Tool has stayed with me through the years, and have held up over time AMAZINGLY well. I still listen to Undertow and AEnima. Anytime a new album comes out, I drop EVERYTHING to pick it up right away. I REFUSE to download leaks. It's the ONE band I won't download a leak of pre-release. It's kind of like a new Zelda game coming out for me. it's a big, big deal. Everything's gotta be just right.

Oh, I just remembered something! This was really weird, but someone left a comment on my level "The Movies" saying something along the lines of "Something about this level tells me you're a Tool fan..."

I was like "REALLY?!" I guess somehow it showed through. It was a bizarre comment because of how spot-on accurate he was.		2009-06-01 21:52:00

Wicked band! I was lucky enough to see them back in 1996 on their Undertow tour, at Porter Hall, Carelton University in Ottawa. AMAZING show!

I'm pretty sure this is the video you're talking about. It's much more clear at what is going on in the song's structure if you watch the breakdown with the music.

As a side note, you may want to check out A Perfect Circle. It's Maynard's other band, one which he describes writing from more of his feminine side. Here's one of their songs.

Very interesting about the drummer playing in a different time signature than the rest of the band, I never knew that. I did however know he is a beast; deff one of my favorite drummers by far. One of my other favorite bands that changes time signatures is Sublime.2009-06-09 02:28:00

Or the Rev, or Joey jordison. Or CoB's drummer.

I like tool too. I have to say they aren't my favorite. That would be the Black Keys for me. But they have excellent industrial-esque music. Sometimes I think tool was in some ways influenced by NIN (which I LOVE).

However, I know Tool fans will hate me for saying this but I'm a bigger fan of A Perfect Circle than I am a fan of tool.

Tool were almost certainly influenced by NIN.

Hey, anyone who's a fan of A Perfect Circle and Tool is okay by me, I don't care where the priorities are! I love A Perfect Circle. I prefer the first album between the two, but they're both almost excruciatingly nostalgic for me, so I never listen to them. You know how it is with some songs. The mood of the memories is too palpable - and even (in fact, especially) if it brings to sense good, happy memories - it's just too much to experience, and listening too much you threaten to numb that sensation.

So, as a result, I never listen to A Perfect Circle.

You guys do know that Tool and NIN are contemporaries, getting their starts at almost exactly the same time? They do have some very similar sounds, but as they're contemporaries making and writing music simultaneously, it's not exaclty a matter of just one band influencing the other. there are other bands that started around the same time that also have very similar sound. Meshuggah being one example.

Tool have listed The Melvins and King Crimson as major influences. I'd also throw Rush and Pink Floyd in there, as they had their own brands of "cinematic" progressive rock that Tool certainly has made their own.

I'm not saying contemporaries don't influence each other, far from it. It just sounds really weird to me to say that Tool was influenced by NIN, because they were both doing their things at the exact same time.		2009-06-12 08:05:00

You clearly know nothing about drums. Danny Carey plays some of the most complex ostinatos ever. That was probably the most ignorant post I've ever read. Ever. There is not question that Danny Carey is the best drummer alive. I can play all of Lars's stuff. I will probably never be able to play Danny Carey's stuff.		2009-06-12 13:31:00

Disposition and Reflection are my favourite Tool songs. That, and Vicarious. I don't understand why people don't like 10,000 Days as much as Lateralus, it's still a masterpiece...2009-06-14 10:35:00

Good point, but just because they started out at roughly the same time (Tool materializing two years later), doesn't mean that one can not have an influence on the other. Looking at both bands' overall existence, it would not be abnormal to be influenced by the other's music.... this goes both ways.

Clearly Andy Kubiszewski had an influence on both NIN as well as Stabbing Westward, but this doesn't detract from either bands influences... if you catch my meaning.		2009-06-14 11:07:00

their live show is awsome.

i saw them twice.

thats the kinda band i wouldnt miss live if i have the chance to see them
