Difficulty of self-made levels?

Archive: 22 posts

Hey guys. Just wondering how difficult everyone is planning to make their levels?

I like a punishing level of difficulty in my platformers (think Castlevania before Symphony of the Night and Metroidvania) that takes many tries to complete but once you do it once it isn't all that hard to do it again. It's a kind of sweet spot that I'll aim for when creating my levels and don't know if I'll be able to get it right. Maybe in time.

How about everyone else? Will you make easy levels that are just really fun to play? Or fiendishly challenging ones that requires precise timing and a concise knowledge of the level structure to survive? :arg:

Want a difficult platformer? Google "I Wanna Be The Guy".

Anyway, I'll probably change up the difficulty based on the level I'm making and the mood I'm in.

Want a difficult platformer? Google "I Am The Guy".

The grandpappy of all difficult games right there. How I love it. Stuck at the last boss...

Anyway, knowing me, mine will be heard. The easiest I'd make will probably be "moderate" difficulty.

I'm more of a story-and-character-is-king kind of guy who finds a little bit of challenge fun but if there's no obvious solution to a challenge after 3 or 4 tries I tend to just stop playing or get a walkthrough. Gaming for me is relaxing, not something that should get me frustrated (I don't mind feeling tense though if it's part of the story arc)2008-09-01 06:24:00

I'm not gonna be trying to make overly difficult levels. My levels will be 'challenging' but, not flat out HARD. My levels will also be story driven. I will say this though. If you want to find an easter egg in my level, you're gonna have to work your behind off for it. THAT will be as hard as I can make it.2008-09-01 06:26:00

I think i'm gonna try my hardest to make a level as meaningful and satisfying as possibe, like with brainteaser puzzles and team-based levels, also with high speed thrills, but i dont think a good level will depend on wheter it is hard or not, i think it the quality matters. Ever played a level in a game a thought: "OMG yess finally!" or "so **** that was the answer"
I wanna try and built that sort of level where you feel you have acomplished somthing, ok i sound kinda weird now

I'll probably make a few "Go complete" levels, but I'm planning on making playground levels, where you just have a bunch of toys and mess around lol.2008-09-01 11:26:00

Varying difficulty of the actual platforming gameplay, and varying difficulty of the puzzles

I would love to make some extremely hard puzzels though...

I know when I play a platformer, or any game for that matter, I like it to be a little challenging, but what's most important is that it makes whatever feat I pull off seem amazing. It's about looking really difficult, but in actuality, being very possible to complete.2008-09-01 11:53:00

the levels at the start will be fairly easy but as people get a hold of the controls and the possibilities the levels will get harder and harder2008-09-01 11:57:00

Hm... I'm probably gonna create 1-3 easy, simple levels to start off then I'm gonna make them a bit more complex; but only medium difficulty.2008-09-01 14:47:00

I'm probably going to make a mixture depending on the type of level.

I'll make a few easy ones to begin with probably. Then for any story driven levels I'll probably have fairly simple platforming and some key and lock type elements to keep it challenging but rewarding. My big epic levels will be challenging but more fast and exciting than frustratingly challenging. And then for myself I'll probably make some really really difficult levels and maybe put one or two of them online.

Oh and I was just wondering. Do think the number of levels you're allowed online will be per PS3 or per account?

I'd say account. It's gonna be very awkward to make it per PS3.

I posted a new thread for Sam to answer if he can. Something I'd be interested in as I could have separate accounts, one for each type of level I'm creating (story-driven, very hard, epic etc.)

theres a limit to that? I thought they just limit the filesize of the level, and you can have asmany uploads as you like.

I'm pretty sure there's a limit either by number of MB you can upload or number of levels you can upload. And then good creators are given more MBs or slots so they can upload more levels.

oh yes.

I think it will probably be automated. There might even be ranks in-game, and depending on your ratings you go up ranks and are given more space. would make it easier for MM to spot their talent aswell.
