The World Ends with You - DS

Archive: 7 posts

This at the moment is the main game I am playing right now. For those that own a Nintendo DS I highly recommend this game. It's a collection game, an action battle game, one with a complex and plot twisting story, and highly polished overall presentation to boot with an incredible amount of depth to nearly every aspect of the game.

It's a difficult one to describe though, in terms of plot or game play. But let me just say it's good, very, very good.

Has anyone else got or played it at all?

I kinda started playing this, seemed really different but I wasn't too into the style. My mate who got it at the same time carried on and found it to be quite intriguing and innovative. He was talking about the food system or something, pretty off the wall game alright.2009-05-30 16:29:00

Well, you eat food to boost your stats. But it runs on a real life 24 hour time cycle, so there is only so much food you can it within one day in the real world. You have to pace yourself and plan ahead.

That's just one part of the game. There is a whole lot of it which overlaps the real world and playing the game. It gives you experience for not playing, as well as setting it to "mingle mode" where you are given experience for finding other random DSes. It will also give you experience even if you can't find any real life people by finding "aliens" at random times.

But why is that stuff good? Well, different types of experience are used to do different things. Giving you XP for not playing is great, as it encourages you to not just put the game down and have a break, but to come back to it and see what you have been rewarded with. It hightens the anticipation of return.

I played this game awhile ago. By far, one of my favorite games of all time. It did so many things unique, and it did it so well. Also, it had many 'firsts' for me:

-It was one of the first games I actually cared about the characters and the story
-It was one of the first games that actually made me laugh out loud. Many times.
-It was also one of the first games to have such an odd soundtrack

It is definitely worth beating, though. After you beat it, there is another short game called "another day", and it is just a joke. The developers seemed to have fun with it, because "another day" is completely random and hilarious. Also, the translators did an amazing job, because the jokes and stuff actually made sense.

Man, I need to play this game again.

Well, your shutdown XP should be pretty high then.

For those that want to know a bit more about the game, here is the official website. It some examples of the screen shots, gameplay, sound track, the game being played, developer interviews... well, anyway, it's: The World Ends with You official web site (http://www.theworldendswithyou.com/)

I gave this one a whirl myself when it originally came out. Im generally a fan of SE's stuff, you see (for the most part).

This is one of the rare games from them though that just didnt sit right with me.

The combat seemed too "button mashy" for me, really. And yes, yes, I know, alot of stylus work, not buttons, but same idea.

Killed the rest of the game for me. Im never interested in the story if the gameplay isnt there, as a rule.

This game really seems to be a "love it or hate it" thing for alot of people, from what I hear. Some friends I know were like "OMIGOD this is so awesome", others I know tried it, sold it quickly.

Certainly a unique thing, though, I can say that much. Nice to see SE try new things.

In the developer interview on the website they say that they intentionally tried to move away from the normal FF/DQ systems they have and make something new and fresh.

I certainly agree that the game can get a bit "stylus mashy" but I personally believe that it's deep enough to be able to defend against such a suggestion. There are many different types of attacks with the stylus from slashing monsters, to planned teleports to creating protective walls to shooting things that reflect off enemies or obstacles... it's possible with a bit of pre-planning and the right pins (attacks) to create pretty huge and powerful chains, and that isn't from just mashing.

It also has a highly variable difficulty system. There are ultimately 4 different difficulties that you unlock. You only start with 1, and then get an easier and 2 harder ones as the game progresses. The changes in difficulty increase the number of enemy hit points and the amount of damage they do each attack, rather than change which monsters appear or what moves they do. You can also change the amount of HP you start with. The less hit points you begin with, the more chance you have of better drops, but the harder it becomes.

I'd say that from all that variety, you could make the game as hard or as easy as you wanted to. You could just leave it on easy, keep the maximum hit points, choose the best and easiest pins, and just breeze through the game.

However, if you want to unlock everything and give yourself a challenge, then choose complex pins to execute, the lowest health you can, no healing pins, and the hardest difficulty you can execute. The game gets very hard for me then. I know from past experiences talking to Bridget what I might find hard Bridget would find easy, but what I am trying to get at is I believe this game has enough scope stategy and choice wise to cope with both casual and hard core players.

Still though, to each his own. It is radically different to most other SE stuff, that being set in the (relatively) normal present day world with a radically different control and combat system. It does sometimes feel a bit "bishy bashy", what I call generic button masher action games, but I personally prefer that style of game myself. To each his own.

With that being said though, for me personally I think it's been the best example of "real time combat" that SE has come up with for RPGs. Some of them are just overwhelming in real time without explaining this, which this game while allowing stylus mashing to get through, eventually settles down in terms of complexity that things start to open up.

It can be a bit slow to unlock though. I found by... I think it was the 6th or 8th day, things really ramp up as more pins with different attack options were given, hard mode was unlocked, and more complex and challenging enemies appeared. It is pretty cruisy until then, to be honest.
