Your gaming ethics

Archive: 23 posts

You know, the more we are getting experienced and knowledgeable about gaming, the more years we spend with medium, its interesting to decipher some behaviors, some traits in how we play. I'm interested to know if ever you thought about those things and if you did look at yourself and tried to see paterns or "rules" that you naturally seem to follow when gaming.

I think the gaming psychology is very interesting and knowing about our habits, ethics, behaviors we did devellop, gives us a bit more insight on game design and about our gaming passion in general. Here's some of my "rules/habits":

-Never cheat. I have cheating so much. If I cheat in a game, it's like I would steal in real life. Simply doesn't feel right, doesn't compute in my brain. So when in my first walkthrough of a game I will never activate stuff we would consider cheats. I will also not use glitches in order to cheat my progress.

-Never abuse save anywhere anytime features. Saving all the time removes the fun for me. I save when I feel I accomplished a good chunk. Not too much to the point I wouldn't feel like redoing it but you know those gamer simply saving all the time and after everything they do? That's bull to me.

-Finishing the games I begin. Normally when I buy a game it's because I know it worth my money and that I really like it. I feel compelled to play them up to completion, at least the main walkthrough. I will not necessarily complete all the extra stuff depending the game. Also, I would continue to play a game I really don't like but it's extremely rare I make mistakes when I buy something.

-Not playing cheap and with style. When I play a game i'm trying to look at AND use all of it's features and opportunities. Using all the moves or items at your disposal is cool. When I find uses for the more obscure things or move it feels great to me. It's like the back dash in Castlevania Symphony of Night. You can completely ignore it and dodge ennemis simply by moving backward but it's oh so more fun and cool to use the back dash to dodge.

Never Cheat when it matters. Cheats that don't affect GAMEPLAY in any way whatsoever and don't change how the game works or give you an advantage are OK with me.2009-05-28 20:20:00

I only have one, really. Explore everything. There has to be some cool secret somewhere...Some nice, hidden location...Items...Especially in games such as Final Fantasy X.2009-05-28 21:15:00

Pretty much never cheat for me. It REALLY irks me when my brother decides to use a gameshark for things... the way i see it, the developers made teh game that way so its a challenge, not so you'll cheat and go the easy route.2009-05-28 23:25:00

I think if people want to cheat, so be it. I tend to cheat on sandbox games like GTA and Saints Row 2, but since I got a new PS3 I haven't cheated, and it's all more rewarding. The only thing that sucks is that I let someone enter my game on co-op and now it says "Cheats Activated" in my save! But it's alright because if someone doubts me I can just show them my phone in-game. Here are mined:

- Don't take advantage of glitches in online games.

- Explore: In games like Dead Space, some people will refuse to explore that bloody bathroom, but I'll go in it! And get valuable ammo!

- Don't be a trophy whore. Trophies are lame.

No cheating:
I never cheat on the first playthrough
Although if i truely hate the game and decide i have no interest in it i'll just go crazy and use every cheat there is

Explore everywhere!:
I always feel bad if i miss an area without knowing what's there, and if i find out i can't go backwards after i miss it sometimes i start again from my last save xD
This is really bad in open world games like GTA and WoW - i always try to visit each area way before i'm supposed too, which results in a lot of dieing

Buy the Game!
These people (Most of the time) put a lot of effort into this game, and when you torrent it, they don't get their well deserved money, and all that work would be for barely anything! Supporting someone who made a good game will allow them to make much better games, which is what everyone wants!

your statment is true and its ILLEGAL!!!

One of my ethic things is

Online before story is OK!
I mean seriously i know people that play online in games and they say they need to beat the story even if they dont really want to. I mean its O.K to play online a lot before starting the story of the game at all you dont even need to play the story ever just play what you think is fun in the game!

I only really cheat when I've finished the game and re-play it, for the lulz. Also, the cheats that don't affect gameplay whatsoever (ie: Plants Vs Zombies, if you type in 'future' etc..)

Three fun-damental rules here:

No exploits!
I personally hate people in online games who exploit and get an advantage over other people. It ticks me off, and sometimes I write off an angry letter to him. And, no, being invincible isn't funny. >

Play the game like it was meant to be!
Don't get a level 99 Mudkip when you start off Pokemon, turn off that Gameshark!

Have Fun!
Well, duh

I have no problems with walkthroughs, I only use it when I really need it, and when a certain savefile gets deleted and you have to start all over

Explore everywhere possible!

In games, I usually try to explore everywhere I can, because in some places that are optional to go to you can find some cool stuff. Sometimes I'll even go back to places just so I can go to more places with new skills my character has learned.

No cheats!

Like others have said, I don't use cheats in a game. I used to a lot, but now it doesn't feel right for me. It feels like I'm not doing it right. Also I don't really use walkthroughs anymore only if I'm really, REALLY stuck.

Try to develop my own styles in the game!

In a lot of games, I don't do very good at them at all at the start, and I don't really like many of the skills/styles many games have. I usually try to go along the game and try to develop my own ways that suit me to win.

Don't use walktroughts!
I mean, a real gamer is supposed to figure out what to do next himself...

Don't download save games just to have a game completed
my nephew downloaded a GTA VCS save game for the PSP and told me he completed it 100% himself...

Don't annoy people online
like when you have a mic, and you start screaming into it annoying others

Play games on normal, NOT on easy
I find this pretty lame honestly, if you can't beat a game on normal...then wow

and to those that say no cheats...I cheat, but only on a different save, like on GTA games

So you do H4H?

LOL.

I dont' like to cheat in games. In GTA games, however, I like to. I completed GTA IV without cheating but after beating all the story levels it was quite boring so I got some cheats for it and just messed around.

I don't like to unnecessarily kill anyone, even in games like GTA4. I let the guys that get up and try to escape escape.2009-05-29 23:46:00

Meh...Gaming ethics are silly unless we're talking Online Behaviour, in which case I don't think I need to specify the golden rule of not being a ****head.
Single player Cheating however is either just a DEV access features.
In any case, if you truly need to cheat to beat a game, you're either just cheating yourself or the game was poorly designed.
I can understand people choosing to utilize cheats to get past a particularly annoying section of the game or perhaps to explore some otherwise unobtainable content.

Yeah I have this habit too. When I play a GTA game, my fun is about killing the less people as possible (outside the badguys that are protecting your target or course)

Hmmm... well, I don't actively cheat. To be honest I can't think back to the last time I have used an in game cheat. It's been several years at least.

I always buy my games legitimately, and never ever pirate. When I was a teenager (so 15-20 years ago) I would "borrow" games from friends. Now I don't even do that. What I mean is that it use to be the case that PC games would need to be installed, but once it was installed it was free to use for as many people as you like. I gave that up years ago. Borrowing console information though is fine as long as it's a legitimate disc or cartridge.

To sum up the last paragraph, if the game developer is getting money, it's a good thing. Otherwise it's questionable or potentially wrong. I prefer to get new games rather than second hand, unless it's a hard to find old title.

In regards to walk throughs, I won't usually refer to them first off. But a well written guide can help enhance your understanding of a game ("Ah, that's why I need to be at that corner at 9pm...") and a walkthrough can help a game instead of being stuck and left to rot unfinished to be continued on past a block point. In my opinion those are good things.

I'll also tend to be a "good" person morally in the game. It always seems odd to me to be killing or preforming other illegal acts in game without genuine justification or motive. Why would I do something opposite of what I am like normally?

Wow. I fail to see the point in even playing GTA or Saints Row without that aspect of the game!
