New Addon

Archive: 60 posts

We have added a slight tweak which makes our lives a bit easier. If you haven't already, you should soon be prompted to read this thread and a few others. This basically allows us to make sure you guys have read anything important we want to tell you. We won't use this constantly, so don't worry about that, but we'll use it when we need to. Thanks for reading! 2008-09-01 00:12:00

That would be the easiest way to do it, honestly, but it doesn't support it. It has to work with individual threads. I think I'll add your FAQ and the helpful hints to the list of threads, though.

Yeah, I know. It's not something that can be changed, however. Like I said, it's a one-time thing, and it won't happen often. Hopefully you guys find it useful rather than annoying.

That raises a question. How often do you guys want to see this? Say we add something new to the forum, do you want to be forced to read about it? Or should it be only for important updates? Let me know, because I want this to be as useful as possible without becoming bothersome.

To be honest, I really like it, so I would say average it out at like, whenever something mildly important happens.. Maybe apply it to contests/votes that need to happen. Thats my vote, I'm sure some will think differently.

ime only thing. Hopefuly you actualy read them, there is some important information on there, and some of it will be helpful to you. You don't have to read the full thread either, just the first post (in most cases)

That's the point of this addon. Sometimes there are threads that we want everyone to see. It will hopefully never be this many at one time, though.

Glad to see you guys like the changes. I also changed the message it gives you when you haven't read something we want you to. It's a bit more personal:

Hey there! Sorry to interrupt, but there's something important we need you to read. Would you mind reading it? (linkhere) Thanks!

That way it seems less like a robot snapping at you to read something.

"Would you mind" xD

Can you do them tags.. like #username# or something that automaticaly changes for the person viewing it, because that would be even more personal. Not sure if its possible here though, but it should be since the "Welcome, Maltay" thing..

The "annoyance" allows us to make sure you guys have read the rules or any other important information. If we ever need to reprimand someone for breaking the rules, they can't say they didn't know them because they had the opportunity to read them. It's easier for us.

I've not visited in a few days, and have now had 4 seperate threads listed as being "important" interrupt my getting to a box full of PMs. It's a good feature, but the announcements should last only for a day ideally, also consider only highlighting news relevent to this site or forum rather than the game - given that the game is the near sole focus of the community...

Just my 2p.

Yeah it probably is going to be site/forum based and tehre was only 4 this time because its brand new, and theres that many threads people should read.

It's not going to be used every day. It was kind of annoying, but it's not like we're going to be marking two threads a day. Unless it's a big new change, and I don't expect a lot of those, it won't affect you.2008-09-01 12:02:00

Could you please have an option to turn this feature off? I find it highly annoying. I didn't care about any of the four threads that it directed me to. It could be on as default, but if someone doesn't like the feature, I don't think it should be forced upon.

This really is a big deal to me. I want this gone, at least on my account.

No, sorry. I'm not going to make a special usergroup that isn't affected by this just so you don't have to see it. It's not going to be used often(as I've said before), and only for important things like new site features(the arcade, for example). I'm working to cut down on what new users have to read(to one thread, optimally), but the feature is going to stay.

To be honest you should care about the threads, they're important and stop this place from becoming messy. It will never be 4 at one time again, unless you decide to not log in for many months. How is it such a big deal? It took what.... less than 1 minute to go through the pages if you don't bother reading them? It's worth the sacrifise.

Hey, guys. To all reading this, I just removed this thread and the FAQ from the "must read" list. Also, I merged Maltay's "Reminders" thread and my "Building Blocks" thread as they deal with the same type of information. Now, new users will only be prompted to read one thread instead of four.2008-09-01 17:16:00

ConfusedCartman, fair enough. At least read Sam's post and take heed of what he said. Only use it VERY often on VERY important topics. Please. The one thread thing is good. Actually, I have a suggestion on implementing it: Have the 'please read' link lead to a thread list that lists all the important threads that you are supposed to read. So when I logged on today, it would've showed me the four threads that are marked as important. After I've seen the threads that are important, automatically remove the 'unread' flag on them so I can go on about my business.

I mean, I have read the forum rules once already. I don't like being policed on a forum, you can trust me that I can behave here or reprimand me if I can't, but please don't force me to jump through some hoops just to get to the forum.

ryryryan,
I also know that closing popup advertisements on a webpage takes only a couple of seconds. That doesn't make me hate them any less.

Also, I'm just having conversation here, so I'm open to all sorts of arguments etc (as you can notice above, I gave a suggestion, too). I enjoy this forum enough that I want to keep it as good as it can be. I just refuse to accept being forced to read topics that I don't care about.

For example, having every user be forced to read a thread about the arcade is a lousy idea. Those who are interested can read the Site News forum.

Linque, the bottom line is, we're not removing it. We'll use it when we decide we should, and I'll try my hardest to make sure it isn't annoying. Let's leave it at that, alright?

Everyone, whether or not this feature should exist isn't up for discussion; however, how we should use it is an opinion I want to hear from everyone. I want to use this in the most useful way possible, and I can't do that without your suggestions. Thanks to everyone who's already contributed their two cents.

I assume you mean seldom instead of "VERY often". And it was always only going to be used seldom, there was just some backtracking to do since it was a brand new add-on.

+ I agree about the Arcade, but other important things are good.

Maltay, yes I meant very seldom. Typo.

Guys, I just don't see any forum having anything as a must read apart from the forum rules. For example, I agree that it's a good thing to have a must read on the forum rules for all new users. But other than that, what could be possibly so important that everyone should be forced to read it? Stickies are for very important topics, so that people see them.

I really don't understand what topics could be that important. I mean, FAQs are good when you search information, but FAQs aren't mandatory reading. Forum rules really are the only thing I can come up with.

We don't know what will be needed either. I do think that the four threads may have been a little much, but you never know; something may happen that requires everyone's attention. It's a good tool to have to make sure people see what they need to.2008-09-01 20:11:00
