Top-Down Gear (Collaboration)
Archive: 12 posts
LBP's very first true top-down level. This is a collaboration between myself and RE515TANT, and is posted under his account (RE515TANT). It's important to read the instructions, at least the first time, but I can summarize for you: You control the car by moving your sackperson left and right, accelerate by grabbing. Seems simple, right? It takes a good amount of practice to really get good at driving. Trying to overcompensate will often send your car into an uncontrollable spin! Small course corrections are the way to go! http://i116.photobucket.com/albums/o16/LoiusAllieran/LBP/Top-Down%20Gear/APhoto_9.jpg The first true top-down LBP level - Top-Down Gear! http://i116.photobucket.com/albums/o16/LoiusAllieran/LBP/Top-Down%20Gear/APhoto_10.jpg Race through a detailed top-down city in your bubble-powered car! http://i116.photobucket.com/albums/o16/LoiusAllieran/LBP/Top-Down%20Gear/APhoto_8.jpg Beware of hazards like traffic cones and street lamps! http://i116.photobucket.com/albums/o16/LoiusAllieran/LBP/Top-Down%20Gear/APhoto_7.jpg As you race through the streets, day changes to night and the city lights up! http://i116.photobucket.com/albums/o16/LoiusAllieran/LBP/Top-Down%20Gear/APhoto.jpg With working nighttime lights! http://i116.photobucket.com/albums/o16/LoiusAllieran/LBP/Top-Down%20Gear/APhoto_1.jpg Water barrels keep you on course, and striped barricades change the course for the second lap. http://i116.photobucket.com/albums/o16/LoiusAllieran/LBP/Top-Down%20Gear/APhoto_2.jpg http://i116.photobucket.com/albums/o16/LoiusAllieran/LBP/Top-Down%20Gear/APhoto_4.jpg See if you can finish fast enough to make the high scores list! http://i116.photobucket.com/albums/o16/LoiusAllieran/LBP/Top-Down%20Gear/APhoto_3.jpg http://i116.photobucket.com/albums/o16/LoiusAllieran/LBP/Top-Down%20Gear/APhoto_6.jpg | 2009-05-28 08:42:00 Author: Loius Posts: 342 |

Woah! I've always wondered if something like this was possible in LBP. I am definitely giving this a go. | 2009-05-28 10:03:00 Author: olit123 Posts: 1341 |
Cool you made a thread for this level. I had a thread advertising it in Recommendations but not many people saw it, maybe now more people will play this awesome level . I already posted how I felt about the level over on LBW, did you see my suggestion I posted over there BTW? I suggested that instead of starting out in front of the track, you start out in like a practice course (like a circle track where people get the feel of the controls and they can get out whenever they want) that way people get used to turning before starting the race. | 2009-05-28 15:05:00 Author: brnxblze Posts: 1318 |
Amazing. I was always hoping someone would make a level like this, since I knew it could be done. I'm glad someone decided to do it, and it looks awesome to boot. | 2009-05-28 15:32:00 Author: Gilgamesh Posts: 2536 |
Wow..... that looks incredible. Just from the pics I can tell you guys have an eye for detail. I hope it plays as well as it looks, but I doubt I'll be able to give feedback anytime soon. Anyhow I'm looking forward to playing this. | 2009-05-28 17:06:00 Author: Pitcard Posts: 779 |
All I want to say is that this is something great, but hard first time. I got the hang on it and I'm trying to explore the city more....the city looks fan-tas-tic! I really enjoy watching it, it somewhat reminds me of GTA2 + lego... | 2009-05-28 17:09:00 Author: oldage Posts: 2824 |
This level is a great technical achievement. All the way through it I was thinking "wow... they really got an entirely new visual out of LittleBigPlanet..." The only thing I would suggest in this particular level is to really work at the steering of the car and see if there's any way to get it to be less fiddly. Regardless, that didn't affect my giving this level 5 stars and a heart - even with the steering issues, it's pretty amazing. I think I also got one of the top scores. | 2009-05-29 04:19:00 Author: CCubbage Posts: 4430 |
Amazing work! :hero::hero: 's I will try this tonight with my wife. Look s spectacular! From the screenshots though it looks like you guys did't use spotlights for the car lights ????? Get them in there quick! JK This is probably going to make the MM level designers feel extra stupid. Good going. I'll give you my thoughts tonight or tomorrow. | 2009-05-29 04:34:00 Author: mindphaser74 Posts: 349 |
Spotlights on the car are truly impossible We're using all ten layers, including thecks & thacks. The car base takes up the back two layers (thin/theck), the carrier for the player takes up the back thack layer, then the visible parts start on the thin layer in front of that. Spotlights being full-thick makes them collide with the graphics, and we more wanted this level to be pretty everywhere than we wanted the car's lights to be 'proper' car lights. Not to mention, spotlights would be either ridiculously thin beams, or ridiculously short, and either way, we couldn't get them to light the road We decided that, officially, the car's lights are causing a lens flare (thus the two spots). | 2009-05-29 11:03:00 Author: Loius Posts: 342 |
Heres the lowdown: Pros -The detail is very good in this level, which i applaud due to your level being top down. -The innovation, a whole new type of level. -I for one didnt have a problem with the steering after a couple minutes.I found it very unique and unexpected. You actually have to turn to turn, not use a jetpack or something stupid. Cons -Is there any way for you to make the car go faster? If you can maybe make another level as a hard version. -At some points in the level, suck as on the second lap, near the end there was 2 spots i thought were either shortcuts or an alternate way to go. There was a spot where you needed to turn right but there was also a way to go left, then what looked like an alleyway.I thought this was a shortcut, and got stuck in there, luckily didnt have to restart. The other spot was even closer to the end, There was a yellow and black road block with no light indicators to not go that way, so i went around the barricade and drove for up to to a couple minutes to find it was a dead end, and had to go back. I suggest making the road block a little bit longer so my car cant get in there, and do something with the alleyway maybe. After reading my last point, have you thought about adding shortcuts? It would be a nice addition if you could put it in there. Your level is the whole package, it has looks, a nice turning/driving system imo, and adds an entire new gameplay element to lbp. 5 stars and im going to heart, i forgot. | 2009-05-30 02:13:00 Author: Jrange378 Posts: 573 |
