Help with sig

Archive: 16 posts

Hello,

I've never actually made a sig before, and looking at other peoples the last few weeks I have decided to have a go my self. I'm using GIMP and had a look a few tutorials and then made this....

http://www.lbpcentral.com/forums/picture.php?albumid=474&pictureid=4079

I don't think its bad for a first attempt, thing is I have two problems,

1. It does'nt look anywhere near as crisp as the one in GIMP (its a .png file)
2. I don't like the text but have chewed and messed around for an hour and am now sick, any ideas?

Cheers

Grant

Have you tried adding a border? Or a different colour font?

I think it is great for a first sig.

Ive tried different colours yeah, can't get it looking quite right, but a border is a great idea, looks like I'm back into GIMP for a bit 2009-05-27 19:59:00

If you want your sig to have better quality then you could upload it to photobucket. From there you can adjust side, you can crop it and add loads of additional effects. Uploading it straight onto this site will automatically re-size it and it will lose a lot more quality- especially if it was big to start off with.2009-05-27 23:26:00

1. Were the lens flare is add a semi transparent white brush. this is now the light source.

2. Sharpen the face with a sharpening tool.

Lighten the face on the side facing the light and darken on the other.

As for text, well, just make it white and outline it 1px black. and at 50% opacity or make it overlay

Lensflare alone wont do it.

You need to make the focal more.. focused and the stuff that isnt the focal less focused.

Also work on the lighting by using opace white brushes and burn/dodge

When you save a picture from .png to .jpg, make sure you choose the best possible quality.
Toy around the Advanced Tab when you save the picture and compare the result to the originals.

Are you sure that image is .png? .png is the best picture quality available for save that is commonly used.

Good luck with your sigs! :3.

LBM, He's saving from a PNG to JPEG and looking for advice to keep as much quality as possible in the transfer.
...I think?

Why not just keep it in .png format?

I was joking. The lensflare belong in the 16th centry. Get rid of it.2009-05-31 12:09:00

The font needs work. Believe it or not, I used to be into pixeling and touched in sig making. You may want to check out this site, for many free fonts:

EDIT: ^^ -.- I hate you...

I think it's a real good first attempt. The font as you said would be better changed though, and I think it's a bit too dark. It could also do with much more lensflare in my opinion.2009-06-02 17:53:00

If you're still interested, I'll have a go at tidying it up a bit for you if you can give me the original image.

It just needs a bit more contrast and maybe a point of interest in a different colour.

The lens flare, although looking cool, is generally an overrated effect now and I don't think it adds much to the image.

If I were to do this, I would highlight the rays of light and really adjust the levels to bing it to life.

Maybe even add some frames and save as an animated gif - which are not very common.

- save to .png otherwise, they are the best quality for web application and also contain a transparent alpha chanel which can be used to great effect (unles you're viewing in Internet Explorer 6!)

I might even set up a forum for sig and avatar design, but I'm not sure what the interest would be..
