Level/Minigame: Pinball!

Archive: 11 posts

This is another level/Minigame idea I have had. This is more of a basic example rather then what i think you could acheive.

So you push the red button to fire the ball, this then bounces of the bumpers in the main area. The three-way switch/lever is used to control the two paddles. If a Ball hits the yellow area it gets destroyed, however if it goes down either side, it either gets fired straight away (the right hand side), or just joins the other balls (left hand side).

To make it abit more interesting, if all three bumpers got hit at the top, then the middle of one of the circle bumper, would open so the collectable (orange ball) or bubbles (white balls) fall for the sackboy to collect. Maybe each time one of the bumpers is hit, a bubble could appear from somewhere and drop, so obviously a simple score system would be how many bubbles where collected before all the balls got destroyed.

Tell me what you think!

(I think my explanations get worse each time, but pinball is pretty easy to figure out!)

EDIT: Updated the image and text, the three-way lever/switch is a much better idea. Thanks guys for your suggestion!

Instead of buttons, I think a three-way switch would be much more reliable. It's a bit quicker when it comes to reacting. It's your design, so make it how you want, but that's what I'd do. 2008-08-31 19:50:00

yeah that three way switch idea would be easier because sackboy has so much hang time when you jump which doesnt help reaction time2008-08-31 20:02:00

If you use the button methods though, you can add "ceiling" RIGHT above the buttons, so when the sackperson jumps, they hit said ceiling and the airtime is pretty much none. Maybe make the buttons closer to each other.

But I'd go with the switch.

For extra effects you could add switches that would change the color of the playing field when hit. And maybe have some of the bumpers in the middle electrified or made of fire. And use the effect they used for the Meerkats in the video, jumping up when touched by the ball. 2008-09-02 19:27:00

Ah that was the plan man for sure. Im not sure there is a 'bouncy' material, so i was going to get them to 'jump' as you said. Thanks for the suggestion though

There is already a video of this on game trailers but the sackboy is the ball and he gets hit upwards by mechanical bumpers.2008-09-02 19:34:00

I read in an article some where, I tried to find it. Alex Evans said you could apply something to a material and make it have a bouncy feel to it. Wish I could find the article, but I cant.

Ah not to worry man, i'll try both ideas anyway when i have the game, see which one works out the best.
