Light

Archive: 24 posts

First up, the facts:
PSN: Coxy224
Level Name: Light
Description: A short adventure to show a different use of lights.
Location: North America

Secondly let me say - this level will literally take 3 minutes, including loading time. It is extremely short so if you're bored or have a spare couple of minutes then please load it up and see something new and original
You control a small blob of light through this short adventure.
Why is it so short? Thermo. It's maxed out. Seriously.

Anyway, look forward to your feedback (and I'll do all the F4F's I get)

I think 3 minutes WITH the loading screen is probably an exaggeration (that would need to be a REALLY slow load). I think the entire experience... including the loading screen... for me was about 20 seconds.

Very cool effect, though. Definately worth taking a quick walk through. Kind of reminded me of the old "Light Bright" toy I had when I was a kid.

lol, yeah 3 minutes is an exaggeration. It's more 3 minutes from when you put the disk in - to the end of the level
But I'm sure Ccubagge will back me up when I say it is worth it
Also I'm sure the "Light Bright" people didn't have a thermo to work with X_x
I wanted such a long level with this concept - **** you Mm.....

Actually. This is VERY cool, but I've seen it done somewhere before. I think it was some japanese level. Don't remember the name of it though. Anyways, I strongly suggest people check this out, because it's a really cool effect. Good work!!!2009-05-25 12:47:00

I've never seen the japanese level before but I'd love to see how they've done it. Mine is very thermo heavy and that stops it getting long.
I wanted blue lights to signal danger but there was just no thermo left
You have to work in a very small space and the complexity thermo kills you.

I will go and check out your LED level Dex - should be good.

The level I played used less lights. Yours looks cooler, but if you want to make a longer one, space your lights farther apart. Even doing that, I don't know how much length you could squeeze out of it.

Had a roll and found it brilliant.
Too bad for the thermo.

Very Cool level. I was disappointed that the thermo prevented a full blown level. I loved watching my lights jumping, running and interacting with the scene. I liked being able to grab on the red lights. Problem was I thought I would try grabbing and swinging (thought that would look cool) from the uppermost ledge opposite the stairs leading to the scoreboard. I ended up disappearing. Ran off right side of ledge, after landing ran back left to try and get back to first set of steps. I was able to do so. When I jumped from the first block step to the second I fell behind again. Could not get back up the second step to finish level after many tries..

Replayed and behaved myself this time and made it to finish.

All that aside.. for concept, visual and just plain cool I rated it a 5 star and hearted.

I love the idea behind this Coxy! I have played one other level based on this sort of thing.... I will try to find it again so you can see it. Yours definitely looks better and is more responsive than the other one I played so you've got that advantage. If that's a full thermo WOW you must have some seriously wicked wiring going on.

I hearted it because I love the idea but yea - legnthwise it's just WAY too short.

Yeah, I checked this out when you first released it and it looks fantastic. It'd be great if you could make a longer version, maybe with blue lights that electrocute you etc etc. Lovely concept level.2009-06-03 09:45:00

Hi Coxy224. I played this level late last night, and was very impressed with your ingenuity. So here's some feedback for you.

In the comments I said there must be some very complex stuff going on behind the scenes in this level, which I'm sure there is. The entire time I played around in here, which was close to 10 minutes, not 3, I was all the while trying to figure out exactly how you did it. I thoroughly enjoy any level that stimulates my mind, and I'm an advocate of "intelligent play" in LBP.

I particularly liked the way the lights had a rolling effect as Sacky was running and jumping, and then settled back into a perfectly square pattern--very very cool indeed.

This level is also a perfect example of why Mm should seriously consider increasing the amount of Thermo available to creators.

All in all, I rated this level 5-Stars for sheer ingenuity and execution of a very unique technique, and Hearted you as a Creator. I plan to check out your other levels as well.

Great job!

When you get a chance, I would appreciate if you could play the Easy version of Takken (Part 1)-The Beginning, and give your honest opinion. I suggested the Easy version, as it has all of my latest tweaks in it.

Thanks.

Rick

Thanks a lot for the feedback guys, greatly appreciated and I'll get round to any F4F I can get ASAP.
@ Lady_Luck - I'm sorry my level couldn't quite work out to you misbehaving
@ Morgana - the wiring in this is ridiculous and the amount of space it takes is also ridiculous. It's actually not even on my moon because it takes so much space. The only way I could knock down the thermo is to make the light less responsive which would e a realy shame.
@ RickRock - If you're really interested in how it works then PM me and I'll tell you, it's not really a huge secret.
Thanks to everyone who hearted the level and again to those who left feedback

Just quickly turned on my PS3 to specifically try this (as I have to go to bed soon because I have to be up for work at 4:30am )

I love the effect and the way it works so well. Just a shame the thermo only allows such a small level

Still 5stared it and hearted just because it's something different (and in a good way )

It is possible to jump on top of the level though and run to the right and see sackboy atm

(Laugh)

That took your whole thermo? I can't imagine what's going on behind the scenes. It does look great though, very Daft Punk.

If you were wondering, the other level that uses a similar effect is LEDicrous Race by RyanardoDaVinci. His uses a lot less lights than your does.

Thanks again for the feedback guys, I'll try and sort out the sackboy being able to run off the screen as well.
And thanks a lot to Julesey for the name of the other level, I'll make sure to check that out

It's been said already, but how in the world is that full thermal? Great concept though. I would not have wanted to do that much work for so short of a level, but it seems you took one for the team...2009-06-05 06:39:00

my guess is that every LED has a proximity switch set to the size of the LED, so look at the # of LED's and double it, and that's just for the lights.

This is very short, but it's also a very cool concept. If you could find a more efficient way of creating this effect, it would be awesome.

+Very nice, simple.

Apart from short, no cons!

I gave it 4. 3 normally, but since this can develop and has lots of potential, 4.
