Player following device at speed

Archive: 4 posts

Hi folks.

I would like to know how to make an object or vehicle follow the player when travelling at speed.

I tried to work this idea into my Desert Dragsters level with the section on Cloud's Fenrir bike to have Red 13 chasing you when you take it.

I have it working to a fashion by having Red 13 on a piston and using a mag switch on the piston set to move directionally when the inverted key on the bike is out of range. I had to use a lot of trial and error though to estimate how long it takes to reach the end and set the piston accordingly.

It works ok(ish) if you just keep going but if you stop part way along then the whole thing starts shaking like a mad whirling dervish and makes you dizzy.

I'm sure there must be a correct way to do something like this but I don't know how. could someone point me in the right direction please.

I've just made a similar device that causes an object to follow the player along a vertical path instead of a horizontal one. However, I'm having the same issue with "juddering" whenever the player stops moving. I'm not sure there's much can be done about it.2009-05-23 11:44:00

Have a mag key on the back of the lead object and a mag switch on the following object set to speed and inverted. link this into wheels that drive the following object. This way, if it's too close then it slows down, if it gets too far away it speeds up.

You should get a negative feedback loop which reaches a stable point at some distance behind and changes occur smoothly. This will also work with a player proximity switch, but will sadly only work with motor bolts driving and will only work in one direction, but if I understand what you are attempting then this should be suitable.

Thanks rtm, I'll experiment with that asap.

Update : I changed that and it's much better now. I messed around with the settings a bit and found that in this instance it works better set to on/off rather than speed.

Thanks for the advice and that was very helpful.
