The elephant's clockwork.

Archive: 5 posts

Hello, people.

I've noticed that here on LBPC there's a bunch of people with really good creator skills, and it looks like that I've kinda found a problem that I can't solve.

It's about the elephant, from elephant's temple. I want to copy it's mechanism, to make a similar machine, but there's just no way I can achieve it; so **** complicated, and it looks like if I'm not getting it's mechanism right.

So, I was wondering if somebody in here knew of an already made object of it, or if somebody skillful enough could show me how to do it; I would be most pleased.

I know I could just attach some wheels on a plataform and that I'll basically get the same as the elephant; a vehicle that moves from left to right.

But c'mon, guys, we all know that that's just the easy way, and we all feel prouder of our level when we look at it and think "****, that elephant was hard to do, but at last, I did it"
Well, when I said "all", I meant "me"

Thanks everybody in advance!

Have a look at it, btw:

And sorry for the bad quality of the photo.

I might have a look and try to figure it out.
Maybe.

Mechanical devices in LBP really aren't my strong point, but I would point out that the "mechanical stone elephant" is a collectable from that level. Have you tried reverse engineering it? Examine the wires and fiddle with the settings and whatnot.2009-05-23 11:10:00

Hi Keldur, I have the same trouble with complicated mechanisms too. When I first got the elephant from story mode I tried to use it in a level but couldn't do anything with it because it just set off as soon as I placed it. I hadn't done any creating at that point though and haven't tried to use it since.

I must say though that I'm glad I didn't use it because it does look a bit rubbish. I prefer to make my own objects now and try to make them more realistic.

I would suggest you do the same as it's much more rewarding and is appreciated much more by the discerning creators here on LBPCentral. I made some elephants for a short paint scheme level I did recently called 'THE BEAST'. Check them out if you get chance. They are non animated but that's just because it was a paint scheme contest to paint methodman55's Monster truck but I wanted to make a small level with it rather than just stick a painted truck in a blank level which is boring for anyone not involved with the contest.

I can also recommend a friends designs. He makes awesome animals ( check his jungle tribe level ) and all his design in general is top notch. His name is Art_of_Tyler. He also has some fantastic custom dragons in his Frostland castle level. Just wait until you see the face on the imprisoned dragon, it's a work of art.

It was playing his levels mainly that inspired me to make better custom objects and animals of my own.

I'm sure you could do something of your own and rig up a way to animate it.

I'll be interested to know how you get on.

I completely agree with you. Objects made by ourselves do really -if not always look- "feel" better.

I'm gonna check your levels when I get the chance, btw. Do you mind if I add you to my friends list? I do hope not...

And about the elephant: I managed to achieve it. I didfinally build it. However, it just walks for a short while; after that, it gets broken. I guess it's just a matter of changing some materials and adding some cristals here and there, to make it work softer. I'm so excited about it! I'll use it to make a plataform of it, wich makes you move through the level while you're being attacked by enemis that'll jump in it. I assure you it's gonna be SWEET.

Oh, and sure, I'm gonna check those levels that your friend did, I do really care for the aesthetics of the levels. I always try to go for the MM way, and I feel that in some parts, I more or less get their visual style right.
Oh, and I'll check your levels too.

I feel that in a few hours I'll have the elefant platform built; would you want me to send it to you? Youd could easily see how it works and it shouldn't be a problem for you to make your own, then.

Thanks for everybodies suggestions!

EDIT: Lol, my father's on the sofa so I can't use the PS3... I'll take me more than a few hours xD
