Weird Slowdown Problem - help!

Archive: 10 posts

I've been spending quite some time putting work into my first level, and the thermometer now is about 3/4 full. However, just last night I experienced a problem/glitch where I will get slowdown that will not go away!

What makes this different than all the other slowdown threads I've read is that when I try to delete memory-hogging objects (lights, multiple materials, complex objects) the slowdown will not be removed. In fact, I deleted a huge chunk of my level to try and get rid of the slowdown, but it didn't help. Apparently, once this slowdown has been triggered, it seems there's nothing I can do to remove it. If I were to accidentally save after this has been triggered (which happened before but luckily had a backup), I would be forever stuck with this.

It only happens when I try to alter certain things. For example, I playtested without slowdown, then deleted a light , then a playtest directly after had choppy slowdown! It makes the level practically unplayable.

For your info, I've got some lighting in my level but not more than 12 different lights, a couple of larger moving monsters, and not more than 8-10 textures. Like I said, I have a quarter of my thermo left and haven't seen this problem before.

Anyone have any ideas or seen this before??

I can't really help except to assure you that lights are NOT memory hogs, my levels are filled with lights. Steady lights, blinking lights, speed lights, foggy lights, tiny lights, ginormous lights, you name it. Never had any slowdown and all three of the levels I am referring to have the therm maxed. I also use about 10 different materials on these.

I would guess it has something to do with... ? I have NO idea

Maybe copy your level to another crater? That would be the first thing I would try.

Perhaps you have too many objects, too close together?
I know, LBP can behave quite weird when it comes to the slowdown.

*I would interject that lights set to shadow do effect the thermo. Morgana told me this and my experiments do confirm this. (Not that they take alot but they do add up, foggy on the other hand seemed to have little or no effect)*

But otherwise I would have no idea what is the cause as I myself haven't experienced this phenomenon.

Sorry AJ, I never use shadow lights (actually forgot all about them).

BTW, was it really necessary to shout this or were you bolding your reply for some other reason? I'm sure you're familiar with forum etiquette, so I'm thinking you weren't trying to be a loser?

No, you're probably right Zwollie, I'm just always on guard on forums because of sooo many instances I'd rather not mention (we've all been there). Sometimes it is hard to tell. I'll give AJ the benefit of the doubt on this one. No hard feelings I hope

Very sorry guys I had no idea that was considered shouting.

I thought that was when you used all caps.

In any case yes I'm a noob when it comes to forums so my apologies!

I have saved to another crater with no luck...is there some other way I can copy or publish it as things to try? Does this have something to do with the recent update? How can I reinstall that?

FYI - I deleted everything in my level as a test after the slowdown triggered. I then pasted an object I had into the level and it was still slow and choppy. I then pasted the object in a new level and it had no slowdown! It's not the object because I noticed it on another one I pasted in as well.

It's like it's something with the level...but my saves are fine right until it decides it wants to slow down on me.

You could try cutting and pasting your problem level bit-by-bit into a new level. This might help you pinpoint the problem. Aside from that, I am outta ideas.
