Official web-based level-sharing portal!

Archive: 34 posts

It seems we have more goodies in-store for us in the near future. I just stumbled upon this bit of information over at 1up.com,

Media Molecule co-founder Alex Evans revealed to 1UP that the company will soon launch a web-based portal for LittleBigPlanet to allow players to advertise their created levels to other users and queue up downloads and get them ready for the next time they turn the game on.

In addition to things like leaderboards, photos, and comments, the portal will also offer an application programming interface (API), which can be used to create custom LBP-related applications.

There's more in the article, it seems we'll be getting so much extra user and profile features! I can't wait!!!!! Mm are doing a spectacular job!

Man, I can't wait for this to release. I'll definitely be integrating it into the site as much as I can - hopefully we can add some interesting new features to the site through this.2009-05-21 07:01:00

Sweet. Kinda like Sackbook (Although I've never had the chance to view it :[ )

This will really change the way we advertise/look for good levels

Uh oh - more distractions for me at work! Eeek!

Pretty cool though. Anyone else a little nervous that it will look a lot like the workshop though? Full of H4H and trophy hunter stuff?

Aw... that is awesome! And exactly what LBP needs IMO to make it more fun. That's the biggest hassle about LBP, finding great levels that you see online in the actual game. I can see myself starting to play LBP a LOT more when this releases!2009-05-21 08:28:00

This is a really nice idea and it just shows how much they care about the players and try to make things better for us =)

Maybe people will be able to find some good levels to play on here and complain less about the "cool levels."

Alex is talking a lot lately hmmm

While yes, the H4H will remain and perhaps get worse, it will still make it a lot easier for people who love the game to find really good levels to play. Also I can imagine that all youtube vids of levels will have a link to queue the level on the side which is something that LBP could really do with. I don't know how many times I've seen cool levels and just wasn't bothered going through the hassle of finding each one in the game.

It will also mean that this site and other LBP fansites which take featuring great levels seriously will probably get a lot more popular and still the quality control of getting featured or not and the F4F system will remain.

This is the first time I've truly been excited about LBP in a good while. This really is excellent news!

Glad they've finally announced that this is going to happen

BTW. I'll be happy to offer any advice to anyone on getting to grips with the API once it's available (that is if it's anything like what I used for Sackbook back in times of yore).

Some one explain what a portal is please. I hear Portal, I think Portal gun. I`m sure this is good news but dunno what it means. Is it like a Bebo or Myspace page, but for your levels? Queue a download??2009-05-21 11:25:00

I'm not sure what Mm have planned, but yes, pretty much a Bebo or Myspace style page per level, with the details that you can normally only see within the game e.g. comments, number of plays, leaderboards, possibly photos.

<plug>Something like Sackbook provided:

</plug>

The "queue a download" feature sounds like a playlist you could play through within LBP, but that you can add to via clicking a button on each level's web page.

Ah nice one dude.

So I find a goodlooking level online, say here in the showcase, then select it and a few others so when i go into the game proper, I have a list of levels to play?

That does sound fantastic if that`s the case.

Maybe they are doing this with the sackbook guy? lol

Anyhow, that's exactly what we need! MORE PROMOTION.

Now I wonder how it will work when you place levels in queue for download. The game will obviously need a new section where you can go and play that queue of level. I could picture a section under the left planet called something like "my levels queue" (ok, I hope they would have a better name) and when you enter there, all the levels you picked up for download appear on a planet and you can chose wich to play.

This sounds AMAZING. It has been my number one most wanted feature since I started participating in this forum and LBPworkshop(which I gave up on...).

GREAT NEWS!

This will hopefully make not only remebering levels to play easier. (because their remebering for you) but ease up on download times by rendering what you will play next before you choose to.2009-05-21 14:47:00

I really really really doubt the game will suddendly download and hold levels for you or save them on your HDD. It's alot of work and testing + redesign, it would be some historical patch there. Don't count on it.

Wow, totally amazing news
I think there will be less H4H and Trophy levels on this as they can't be bothered to post their levels there (hopefully!)

I'd also like to see what CC can do with this feature. Could get some really good things on the site

Well not necessarily "better" - that depends what Mm have up their fun-packed sleeves and what any API allows. However I still hope Sackbook can return and work with the rest of the community to experiment with and offer additional niche features that Mm may not have the time to try.

That's not quite what I meant by my tweet - it's hard to express things in under 140 characters

Lemme try again... I meant to say that hopefully this API will allow Sackbook to return and develop in a way (through community involvement) that compliments what Mm provides on their portal. The great thing about being unofficial is that sometimes it gives you much more room to experiment and try new things, a few of which are already in place, ready and waiting for the day the site can return

This will be soooooo great and will help people still stayed connected to LBP when away from their PS3

Depending on how flexible the API is, I could do some pretty cool things with this new update - potentially even allowing you to queue levels from LBPCentral itself. I'll have a talk with Sackbook's author and see how flexible the API they provided him was.2009-05-22 02:06:00

That would be so conveniently awesome! I can't wait for this thing to happen, I would like to see how far it could be pushed.
